Emmylou Harris "Wrecking Ball" Remaster.
« on: February 03, 2014, 07:19:21 PM »
Over at nonesuch.com it's been announced that Emmylou Harris' 1995 album "Wrecking Ball" will be remastered, and re-released in April of this year. The package will be a three disc set, with a second CD of outtakes from the sessions, and a DVD titled "Building the Wrecking Ball" which will feature "interviews and studio footage of Harris and Lanois as well as special guests Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Neil Young, Steve Earle, Brian Blade, and others."

It's now available to pre-order at nonesuch.com - and preorders come with a signed print.

"Wrecking Ball" is one of my favorite U2 side projects. Larry Mullen contributed to a number of tracks on the album, and Danny Lanois produced and plays on the whole album.  I'm happy to see it getting a digital look and i'm patiently waiting to see what the second disc of audio tracks brings.  Maybe it will have some additional Mullen work?

Looks like the outtakes will have a couple of songs Larry played on:

only $25 for 2CDs and a DVD is a pretty good deal.

I love this album as well!  I'm hoping to hear some more Larry on the bonus tracks, and maybe he'll pop up in the documentary as well, although the press release doesn't mention him.  In case the track list wasn't at Nonesuch, here it is:

Disc 1
1. “Where Will I Be?” (Daniel Lanois)
2. “Goodbye” (Steve Earle)
3. “All My Tears” (Julie Miller)
4. “Wrecking Ball” (Neil Young)
5. “Goin’ Back to Harlan” (Anna McGarrigle)
6. “Deeper Well” (David Olney, Lanois, Emmylou Harris)
7. “Every Grain of Sand” (Bob Dylan)
8. “Sweet Old World” (Lucinda Williams)
9. “May This Be Love” (Jimi Hendrix)
10. “Orphan Girl” (Gillian Welch)
11. “Blackhawk” (Daniel Lanois)
12. “Waltz Across Texas Tonight” (Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris)

Disc 2 – Deeper Well: The Wrecking Ball Outtakes
1. Still Water 3:55
2. Where Will I Be (alternate version) 4:14
3. All My Tears 3:21
4. How Will I Ever Be Simple Again 3:36
5. Deeper Well 2:18
6. The Stranger Song 5:21
7. Sweet Old World (alternate version) 5:56
8. Gold 3:16
9. Blackhawk (alternate version) 4:40
10. May This Be Love (acoustic) 2:15
11. Goin’ Back to Harlan 2:35
12. Where Will I Be (alternate version) 2:13
13. Deeper Well 3:06

FYI,

Awaiting reply from Nonesuch Store regarding FLAC encoding (16 or 24 bit).

The Nonesuch Store confirmed the FLAC encoding is only 16 bit.  :(

Got my link as well.  Listening now.  But no credits listed with the digital files.  So I'm hoping the booklets will provide a little more information.  I'm in love with her version of Lanois' "Still Water" already though.  Beautiful.  :-)

I looked at Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, and even the utter wasteland that is Walmart (they still carry lots of country music), but no one had this. So I'll head to my local indie later this week.

24-bit FLAC is available on HDTracks, but $26 seems a little steep to me just for digital files.

Same thing happened to me with the last Pearl Jam album. I pre-ordered FLACs from their official site which turned out to be 16-bit, and they were released in 24-bit the next week on HDTracks.  >:(

The lesson I suppose is that if you think you might want something in hi rez, don't pre-order and wait to see what gets released.

On the DVD you see Larry in the opening credits, and playing a few times throughout out, once while recording "Sweet Old World" and once just riffing in a group with Lanois and the others all sitting around...Lanois talks about recording Larry at another point.  Not a huge amount of U2 content there, but he is in there.  :-)

The DVD content is from 1996.  It was put together as a special back then.  It's 49 minutes in length so probably done for television?

Does anyone know a way to get these files onto a CD without being quashed?

CD is always 16 bit, 44.1 kHz,  but you can make a 24/96 audio DVD that is playable in any standard DVD player.

Bought this for $19 and change and had it arrive yesterday from Amazon. This, along with the Nanci Griffith stuff, was my most difficult purchase because I utterly loathe country music. I had to do it because I'm sick in the U2 head; it was much more for the peace of mind that it will help make my collection more complete, not because it will ever be spun more than once per decade.
