Window In The Skies
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:41:21 PM »
My copy is a 141k grab from the radio. The beginning contains a little overlap from a previous song. Here's what I got.

Window In The Skies
(First try)

(beginning is murky)

The shackles are undone
The bullets quit the gun
The heat that’s in the sun
Will keep us when there’s none

The rule has been disproved
The stone it has been moved
The grain is now a groove
All debts are removed, oo-oo-oo

Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please (blease?) ;)
Soul and its striptease
Hate brought to its knees

The sky over our head
You can reach it from our bed
If you let me in your heart
And out of my head

Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Ah-ah-ah-ah-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ah-ah-ah-ah-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Please don’t ever let me out of here

I’ve got no shame
Oh no, oh no

Oh can’t you see what love has done
Oh can’t you see-hee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Oh can’t you see what our love has done /  I know I hurt you and I made you cry
Oh can’t you see what our love has done /  Did everything but murder you and I
Oh can’t you see what our love has done / But love left a window in the skies
What it’s doing to me / And to love I rhapsodize

Oh can’t you see what our love has done / To every broken heart
Oh can’t you see what our love has done /  For every heart it cries
Oh can’t you see what our love has done /  Love left a window in the skies
What it’s doing to me / And to love I rhapsodize

Oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh / Oh can’t you see
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh

Spot on as far as I can tell!

The murky intro is actually Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees heh.

yup ... but the actual Radio CD Promo runtime is 3:59 , and is quite nice , it's also labeled as (Single Version) , which leads me to believe the U218 version will be different

Nice work with the transcription slaneman

Also makes you wonder if the "single version" that finally gets released as a single will be different than the promo.

Thanks for the transcription, Slaneman.

"the grave is now a groove"

That's in the lyrics sheet in the official release. If you listen again you'll hear it. Or you can imagine you hear it. :)

The grave is now a groove? Dancing on the dead? Go lyrics sheet!!

Grain makes more sense I guess, you were able to shape the grain of a piece of wood into a groove.  Not that carpentry really fits into the song unless you take it as an allusion to the profession of Christ. ^^

In the 3 Tokyo shows, the Tokyo TV appearance, and the finall Hawaii show he sings "grave".

The musical arrangement evolved somewhat from the first live performance.

During the final chorus---
Oh can’t you see what our love has done / To every broken heart
Oh can’t you see what our love has done / For every heart it cries
Oh can’t you see what our love has done / Love left a window in the skies
What it’s doing to me / And to love I rhapsodize

In the very first live performance Bono sings only "To every broken heart"..etc.. and does not harmonize with Edge for the "oh can't you see..." , which is a very cool part on the studio version. Ther last couple shows Edge sings this counter melody instead of the chorus melody, which makes it sound closer to the single version. It's very interesting to see how they keep reworking a new song bit by bit.
