New 2018 Masters of Achtung Baby and Zooropa
« on: July 27, 2018, 02:00:43 PM »
Got my vinyl today. I knew we were getting a remastered version of The Best of 1980 - 1990 so it didn't surprise me...but I was surprised to see that there are new remasters of Achtung Baby and Zooropa. I'd been told they would use the same audio mix that they did in 2011 for the Uber release, but it appears that they have gone in and made changes to these further than that...all three albums are listed as 2018 Remasters in the liner notes, and all list that the mastering is done under the Edge's watchful gaze...

Are there any track time differences compared to the original release?  I'm thinking of how a few of the MFSL tracks differ reasonably from the original.

Nothing that stands out. Off by a couple of milliseconds on all of the tracks, but just slight differences in the start and end silence I'm betting, but enough that it does show some work has been done. I'll go through a little closer on The Best of.  Those tracks had some notable differences and I'm wondering if those are still there in this new mastering.

Lemon (Perfecto Mix) is 8:57.542, Numb (Gimme Mix) is 8:51.417.

Everything else is the same length as it is now except for slight differences but less than a second out...

Going through these with a fine tooth comb and finding some interesting stuff on The Best of 1980 - 1990.

We've always had a slightly longer version of WLCTT on that release. There's one extra guitar lick that can be heard at the end as the song fades out. That's gone now, and the version here is the same as that on Rattle and Hum now.

New version appears to be sped up just a little bit, which is resulting in a slightly longer silence at the end of the new tracks I checked.

If anyone spots any differences would love to hear about them...

Just finished going through Zooropa and comparing it to the 2011 version. (I used the digital wave files for the two comparisons.)  Little difference in the tracks themselves. The overall loudness is higher on the new one, with more difference between the quiet parts and the loud parts. But one track is slightly different. "Lemon" from the album itself runs a bit faster now than it did on the 2011 or the 1993 mixes. Its been sped up just a bit, but about 0.3s overall. The overall track time is the same, but because it is sped up a bit, its got a bit of silence at the end making up this time.

Going through the others this afternoon as well.

Do the download cards in these give digital copies of the new remasters, or digital versions of the 2011 masters?
