New Release Possibly? Herbert Gronemeyer performance...
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:41:48 PM »
Taken from atu2.com - keep an eye out for this album "I Walk" due in October to see if Bono does appear on it.  I expect it will be import only for those of us in North America...Warning: NO CONFIRMATION that Bono will be on this yet...

---

It seems that Bono made a surprise appearance Tuesday night in Germany, singing with his longtime friend Herbert Gronemeyer at the Metropolis Hall in Potsdam. We got an email this morning from @U2 reader Jules K., pointing us to a couple tweets and Facebook posts about it. And now our friends at U2tour.de are also reporting it.

From all accounts, Bono and Gronemeyer sang his song, "Mensch," the same song they performed together in 2007 at an anti-poverty concert in Rostock, Germany. This tweet mentions Bono's performance last night, but includes a photo of Bono and Gronemeyer from 2007. Another tweet includes a photo from last night's appearance.

The performance was apparently recorded for Gronemeyer's upcoming English-language album, I Walk, which is due for release in October. According to U2tour.de, Gronemeyer will do another concert in London on October 28th, and Bono may make another appearance with him.

UPDATE: U2tour.de has updated its news to include that Bono and Gronemeyer also sang "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" together.

From http://groenemeyer.co.uk/ (Official Site):

Grönemeyer's forthcoming album, ‘I Walk’ held the working title of ‘Das English Album’ – for it is a tribute to the country that Herbert sought refuge and comfort in, following a private tragedy in 1998.

Appropriately, it's Grönemeyer's first release in his adopted homeland; a collection of songs in English, four reworked from his 2011 German release Schiffsverkehr, six from older albums and three specially written for the record. The album features collaborations with internationally acclaimed artists Bono, Antony Hegarty (Antony & The Johnsons') and James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers).

I can't find any indication of a North American release for this. Just pre-ordered from Amazon UK.

He glows visibly with pleasure at the memory, before recalling how Bono also ended up on the record. "He was here in the studio, and the really beautiful thing with Bono is that once he's into something then he can get really focused. And he listened to the album, and he said 'Wow! It's so beautiful! Sounds like classics to me. May I try something out? Maybe pick two songs for me and if you like it, take it.' And I was really, 'Wow! What is that?! This can't be true.' And then he sang on 'Mensch', and I was completely thinking, 'Wow, this is really kind.' It was not that we'd been sitting down (and planning), but it's a massive help. It's a big door opener. Because I think no one's waiting for this album."

The duet between Bono and Groenemeyer which was released on Monday in the UK and Europe.  This has been uploaded by the record label here, which is why it's appropriate to share. :)

Mine was from Amazon UK as well. Didn't order it until the day after it came out. Finally picked up the two disc version of Oakenfold's "Greatest Hits & Remixes" while I was ordering from the UK anyway.  :)

Looks like the concert from Postdam that Bono appeared at will be shown on PBS in the US. Also the album will be released in the USA on February 19, 2013.

Trailer for the show on PBS: (Show dates, December 3, 8, 9)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCvRoXFRljY
The concert involves Bono and Gronemeyer singing both "Mensch" and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"

There will also be a DVD available for those who want to contribute $75 to PBS:

DVD:Herbert Gronemeyer: I Walk Live
Taped at Postdam in Germany, and featuring Bono of U2 as a guest star, Grönemeyer combines his own original songs with some of his favorite classics in a one-hour concert . The concert includes two duets with Bono: an English version of Herbert's biggest hit "Mensh", and also the U2 Classic "In the Moment". Other Songs performed include: "The Tunnel", composed by Herbert for the soundtrack of the film "The American" starring George Clooney, "The Letter" (made popular by Joe Cocker), "Always on My Mind" by Willie Nelson, "Marie" by Randy Newman and "I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen.
