New Song: "Invisible" for Red.
« on: January 12, 2014, 12:16:50 PM »
For those who don't make it to u2.com that often:

http://www.u2.com/news/title/invisible-for-red

"There's been some online buzz this week about what the band have been up to in LA.

Here's the scoop.

It's all about a new song called 'Invisible', a track the band will be releasing as part of an initiative with (RED), to support the fight against AIDS.

Everybody's really excited about the song and the band have been shooting the video in LA.

That's all we can say for now... we'll keep you posted!"

--

Lots of information about "Ordinary Love" but no mention of an album.  It was all tied to the movie.  Now they are talking about "Invisible" which will be tied to some initiative with (RED) and I'm thinking will be tied into the Superbowl stuff.

Are we going to get an album?  Or just a series of singles?  That would be a lovely little trick haha.  The good news is this one is supposedly on the new album, where as Dave Fanning said that "Ordinary Love" was not going to be (at least in it's original mix - maybe the Epworth mix will?)

So, Dave Fanning played "Invisible" twice on his radio show last night... except it wasn't "Invisible," it was a 2012 track from some band called Dark Stares.

What do we make of this?  Was Fanning (who should know better) duped, or is this part of some wacky new promotional stunt?

Old promo photos.  "Boy Falls from the Sky" is one of the songs up and I really doubt U2 will use it after giving it over to Spider-Man.

I have a feeling Fanning was duped, and bought it.  Probably saw it on the web and thought "i better rush if i want the first play".  Maybe didn't do the fact checking...surprised he played it a second time though, i figured it wasn't U2 the first time out.

what does this really accomplish except pissing off fans?  Only thing I could think of is there is a real leak out there and they are trying to cover it by putting up fakes...but that seems a lot of effort to go through.

I tend to agree he was duped.  It's just strange that a guy with a genuine inside track with U2--the same guy who has legitimately played "world premiere" U2 music numerous times in the past--would somehow be sucked in by a silly YouTube scam.

I kind of like your theory that there is a genuine leak out there somewhere and Fanning and U2 are just trying to divert everyone's attention.  :)

You can download "Invisible" for free here on February 2, and Bank of America will donate 1$ to RED. The machine is in motion!

From u2.com

The band have given a new track, 'Invisible', to (RED) for a free download on iTunes next week - for 24 hours only.

The song, produced by Danger Mouse and mixed by Tom Elmhirst, launches a partnership with (RED) and Bank of America to fight AIDS.

Every time the track is downloaded, anywhere in the world, a $1 donation will be made to (RED) by Bank of America - up to a total of $2m. All the funds will go to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

'Invisible' will be available on iTunes for 24hours from Feb 2nd - 'Super Bowl Sunday'. A commercial during the Super Bowl will feature the band performing the track, from a forthcoming video directed by Mark Romanek.

Since Bono and Bobby Shriver founded (RED) in 2006, to engage business in the fight against AIDS, it's generated more than $240 million for the Global Fund. (RED) and its partners – from Bank of America, to Starbucks, Apple and others – are working to end mother-to-child transmission of the deadly HIV virus by 2015, in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals.

At first I thought that photo was recycled from the 360 Tour... you know, the round illuminated microphone that Bono used. But I guess it's actually a clock, so maybe it's something new after all.

Update on this from the eventual discography entry:

In a bizarre incident, Irish DJ Dave Fanning played the new song by U2, "Invisible" on his January 16, 2014 radio show. He played the song twice, and spoke in detail about how it was the world premiere of the new U2 song. It wasn't, however, a U2 song, it was a song from 2012 by a band called Dark Stares called "Bad Machine". The song had been uploaded to YouTube the day before the RTE broadcast and was labeled as being a new U2 single. Fanning claims he didn't fall for a hoax however, and two days later he confirmed on the radio that it was a prank. "We did point out that it was a spoof," Fanning said speaking with The Sunday Times, "It was funny. There's not much going on at night time on the radio."

The opening drum loop sounds like an intentional throwback to "Beautiful Day."

I dunno. I'll have to hear it a few more times.

Other than the synth drums (I don't enjoy any of the band's contributions being marginalized), I really like it a lot. Miles better than "Ordinary Love".
