New U2 song: "Ordinary Love"
« on: October 17, 2013, 12:57:29 PM »
U2 will have a new song in the "Mandela" movie called "Ordinary Love."  It can be heard in the trailer (premiering tonight) and I think the U2.com fan club will also have it after 6:30 EDT.  I'm guessing this is a separate track and not part of the new album, but who knows?

The fan club just had the trailer for subscribers. Disappointing as it went live at Yahoo at the same time so really wasn't much of an exclusive for subscribers.

After the whole "Tune in we'll have a big surprise" which lead to the Tiesto remix of Pride I should have known better than to expect too much.  But I did hope that U2.com would make it a genuine special after learning in advance that the trailer would have a U2 song in it.  Would have been nice to have a stream of the new song.  I'd even take a snippet of the song without all the movie trailer over top.  Missed opportunity.

Now after the Tiesto remix, and now this, next time U2.com announces a big surprise I won't be rushing to log in.  Feel doubly stupid because I drove into work last night because of a better internet connection which I thought would improve things if it was something exciting.

Still a nice song.  Trying to find out now if there will be a physical soundtrack release.

An Irish radio station said there will definitely be a soundtrack release, but then again it was just excited DJs speculating.  Who knows?

I wonder if this track is Danger Mouse-produced?  From the info on U2.com it sounds like the band just recorded this during their recent return to New York.  So I'm guessing it won't be on the new album, or maybe it will be on the album in a different mix (as in the different album and movie versions of Hands That Built America, Elevation, Winter, etc.)

No reason to feel stupid. That's just what a real fan does. We're all guilty of some laughable actions for U2.  :)

I seriously imagined they'd drop a new single from the forthcoming album. Hmm.

Apparently a FULL version of the song will appear on U2.com and YouTube tomorrow.  This was reported in an Irish newspaper, although I haven't seen any other evidence that it will actually happen.

UPDATE: U2 will have a 10" vinyl of "Ordinary Love" b/w "Breath" for Record Store Day/Black Friday in November.

PS... I'm guessing "Breath" is actually "Breathe"--probably a live version.

It may be the alternate version of "Breathe" that was used in the "Africa Rising" documentary a few months back.  :)

First "Wide Awake in Europe" and now this. How infuriating! I detest vinyl and refuse to buy it! What is the logic behind these exclusive format releases?! It's worse than retailer exclusives!

According to indie seller "Bull Moose," who I believe broke the news about the 10-inch, the b-side is indeed "Breath" and not "Breathe," and is new music.  Hmmm.

I wonder how long it will take U2.com to break this exclusive news to us...

The u2.com article clearly says that it is "Breathe".

"Ordinary Love, a new song written for the upcoming movie Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, will be released in a 10-inch vinyl pressing to mark Record Store Day on November 29th.

The sleeve artwork features a striking painting of Nelson Mandela by Irish artist and illustrator Oliver Jeffers. Oliver has also directed a lyric video for Ordinary Love which we'll carry on U2.com during November.

The band wrote the new song at the invitation of movie producer Harvey Weinstein  and the b-side of the Record Store Day release will feature a second track, Breathe, another song with a Mandela connection.

We'll have copies of the vinyl release up for grabs in a competition next month.

Stay tuned..."

Perhaps a hint of the upcoming "lyric video" - graffiti on the sides of building for the lyrics?

http://www.amazon.com/Mandela-Long-Walk-Freedom-Soundtrack/dp/B00G0RTNFA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1383137064&sr=8-2&keywords=mandela+soundtrack

Amazon.com listing now lists artists:
U2 (Artist), Public Enemy (Artist), Gil Scott-Heron (Artist), Bob Marley (Artist)
Format: Audio CD

Under Editorial Reviews it lists:
A mix of political movement songs; Public Enemys Fight The Power, Bob Marleys War, Gil Scott-Herons The Revolution will not be Revolutionized and cast recordings of South African chants

The Movie: A chronicle of Nelson Mandelas life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

Current release date is listed as November 25th, although it's likely to be the 26th in North America.  That would put it out on CD a few days before the release of the single on vinyl.

I wonder if there's a chance that "Breathe" will also appear on the Mandela soundtrack?  Since it was already used in the documentary, I'm guessing not.  But it would be nice to have it on CD rather than confined to a RSD vinyl.
