Two Shots Of Happy, One Shot Of Sad
« on: November 01, 2004, 05:52:39 PM »
Bought the Nancy Sinatra CD the other day and it's brilliant! I checked out the lyrics to TWOHOSOF and found some words that don't match with what's printed in the Mysterious Ways section.

This is what I hear when I listen to the song.

The second line in the first verse:
"You think he's no good, well he knew he was bad"

2:n verse, 2:nd line:
"Don't try to figure out what we might have had"

5:th verse, 1:st line:
"Guess he was greedy, all of his life"

6:th verse, 1:st line:
"Well maybe it's was talk, saloon singing"

I agree with suggestions 1, 3, and 4 (changing it's to it).  I did that transcription when I was in between ISPs due to moving, so the html editing was done in open office on a laptop mac osx, then added in using safari on dial up.  Things were a bit hectic, but those are pretty glaring oversights...

I do think line 2 is "of" instead of "have."  Thanks for the corrections!

OK, now I'm confused.... Checked out the lyrics printed in the booklet, and they differs quite a lot from what Nancy's singing. The biggest difference being that the lyrics is written in first person ("I") and she sings it in second person ("you").

It certainly works better the way she sings it, but it looks like they've printed Bono's original lyrics (or at least what's on the IGWSHA single) in the booklet and I can't imagine why. Guess the booklet was printed before the mixing of the song was finished, that's the only reason I can think of.

Don't know if the lyrics from the booklet are of any interest, but here they are anyway:

Two shots of happy, one shot of sad
You think I'm no good
Well I know I've been bad
Took you to a place
Now you can't get back
Two shots of happy, one shot of sad

Walked together down a dead-end street
We were mixing the bitter with the sweet
Don't try to figure out what we might have had
Just two shots of happy, one shot of sad

I'm just a singer
Some say a sinner
Rolling the dice
Not always a winner
You say I've been lucky
Well, hell, I made my own
Not part of the crowd
Not feeling alone

Under pressure
But not bent out of shape
Surronded we alway found an escape
Drove me to drink
But hey, that's not all bad
Two shots of happy, one shot of sad

Guess I've been greedy all of my life
Greedy with my children, my lovers and my wife
Greedy for the good things as well as the bad
Two shots of happy, one shot of sad

Maybe it's just talk, saloon singing
The chains are all stacked
The swingers stopped swinging
You say I hurt you, you put the finger on yourself
Then, after you did it, you came crying for my help

Two shots of happy, one shot of sad
I'm not complaining
Baby, I'm glad
You call it compromise
Well what's that
Two shots of happy, one shot of sad
Two shots of happy, one shot of sad

It does look like they just put in the U2 version lyrics.  The "he" works well, makes it feel like she is singing about Frank Sinatra.

Silly official lyrics.  Here's some of the better ones:
