U2's Non Album Tracks.
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:30:25 AM »
I was asked by a frequent user of the site if i had a list of U2's non-album tracks which strips out all the remixes of songs on albums, and live versions of material.  I've been going through and making a list of what would fall under this category.  The following two posts are what i came up with.

Criteria?

1. All four members of U2 had to work on it, or it had to be on a U2 release.  i.e. Bono and Edge doing a song by themselves would not count unless it was released on a u2 single.
2. Songs with guests were included but will be denoted with a *
3. No live songs will be included, these should be studio tracks only.
4. Cover songs will be separated from U2 originals.

The following is the list I came up with.  First up the Covers:
Ave Maria (Jacknife Lee Mix) *
Beat on the Brat
Can't Help Falling in Love
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
Dancing Barefoot
Don't Take Your Guns to Town
Everlasting Love
Fortunate Son
Happiness is a Warm Gun
I Believe in Father Christmas
Instant Karma
Jesus Christ
Neon Lights
Night and Day
Paint it Black
Pop Muzik
The Saints are Coming *
Satellite of Love
Tower of Song *
Unchained Melody

As you can see I included the Best Ofs and the 18 compilations as "Non-Album" in my list.
So am I missing anything?!   :-)  Is anything on there that was on an album?!

I really want a list that you could say, if you have all of the studio albums, here's the rest of their songs they've done in the studio on other releases.

what about Things to make and do?

and what about the Passengers Songs? If Passengers = U2 in this section, then Viva Davidoff is another track to be listed.

I've Got You Under My Skin *

It was only Bono and Frank Sinatra, but it's on a U2 release.

A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel
Spanish Eyes

Does Can't Help Falling In Love really count? The versions on U2 releases are remixes.

Thanks everyone.  All great suggestions.  I'll start editing the list accordingly over the next couple of days.

I guess there are technically two versions of "Winter."  The one from "Linear" and the one from the "Brothers" soundtrack.  I know there wasn't an officially released CD of "Brothers," but weren't there some CD-R promos of the song floating around?  I may be imagining that.

Also, did the original version of "Winter" ever appear anywhere in an official capacity, beyond the "Linear" film?  The audio version I have is a DVD rip.

There were audio promo cds of "Winter" pressed for consideration at the Oscars / Golden Globes.  The version from Linear has never to my knowledge been released on audio formats.  That would have been a great "rarity" for a fan club cd.  :-)

There was a CD-R of the Brother's version of Winter sent out to Oscar's voters, but I don't have any idea of the total number. I suspect not many because it didn't receive a nomination and they seem to be pretty scarce. The Hands That Built America, by comparison, did receive a nom and promos of that track are still pretty easy to find.

I believe it's common for early Oscar's promo stuff to go only to certain guild member initially to try to build enough momentum for a nomination, with a bigger push later after the nominations come in.

AFAIK, the Linear version has only been released on the DVD and the various digital incarnations of the film.
