The Wanderer 5 Takes w/ Broadcast
« on: April 19, 2009, 09:23:40 AM »
One of my favorite songs with some of Bono's best ever lyrics. This is a little peek into the taping sessions for U2's contribution to the Johnny Cash tribute TV show. Bono is so intent on getting it perfect and really runs this session. There's some humorous interaction between band members and fascinating comments from Bono about his lyrics. Amazing that they put in all this effort prior to even starting the soundcheck for their Vertigo show.

The Wanderer

Take 1
IEM from videotaping session
Staples Center
Los Angeles, California
2005-11-02

I went out walking
Through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul

I went out walking
Under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye

I went with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering
Wa-wa-wa-wa-wandering

I went drifting
Through the capitals of tin
Where men can't walk or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in

Stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit
They say they want the kingdom
But they don't want God in it

I went out riding
Down that old eight lane
I passed by a thousand signs
Looking for my own name

Yeah I went walking
I thought you'd be there too
Looking for you
Wa-wa-wa-wa-wandering

(Alright solo)

I went out there
In search of experience
To taste and to touch
As a man can
Before he truly repents

I went out searching
Looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father's right hand

I went out walking
With a bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one

Jesus, don't you wait up
Jesus, I'll be home soon
I went out to bury my love
I tell ya I’ll be back by noon

Yeah I left with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
Looking for you
Wa-wa-wa-wa-wandering

Yeah, I went with nothing
But the thought, the thought of you
I went wandering
Wa-wa-wa-wa-wandering

Ah-hoo
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-hoo
Ha-ah-ah
Ah-hoo
Ha-ah-ah

Okay

2nd file

Bono:

Rick, you’ve no objections to staying there, will ya,  for the next…15 minutes?
You’ve no objections to staying there.
Could be nice, I think Johnny would like that.
Okay.
At the very end, Rick, I can do a verse
Rick, at the very end I could go up high at the last verse, like
(Sings up an octave)—“I went out searching”
So I don’t know if I should do that or if I should just keep it…cool
Will you think about that?
…he takes the high bit
Okay, we’ll…okay
Ah, can we see the picture of Johnny on the TV or is this a…ah an abstraction on an abstraction…can we see it on the TV? We certainly can’t see it from here
Okay, good…oh, that’s great, okay then, then we’re ready, ready when you are for another take

Edge:
I thought we already got it (laughter in background)…I’ll never do it as good as that again

Larry:
Guess it’s one take then.

Edge:
That was it.
Bono if you want me to do the high stuff…

Bono:

Yeah it was great, but

Edge:

For, for that, just the last set of verses isn’t it?

Bono:

Eh, I’m changing the lyrics as we go, Edge, so don’t do them for the moment
But if you, you, if you just actually stand over the microphone I don’t think anyone will notice.

Edge:

Yeah…well I can always patch it up if I get it wrong

Edge:
Where’s my close-up camera? I’m just trying to figure out where the different cameras are

Bono:
Okay, we’re ready when you are

Edge:
Adam, I think pogoing was a bit of a… bit of a new bag (Bono laughs)

Bono:
Okay…are we good? Okay, we’re rolling. Terry-world is go

(Unknown voice):

  Okay

Bono:

So that was the…the, the sorta wide shot, is that right?
That was a close up.
Oh I didn’t know that was it, I thought, I thought, eh, Steve said it was a wide shot, the first one.
That was a tight one there? Cos I wasn’t thinking I thought it was a wide shot so I was just looking around and stuff.

Edge:

I might have played okay.

Bono:

Okay…so Edge in that last verse, um, um, maybe, we...on the, on the autocue let’s change the verses to “Jesus don’t you wake up, Jesus, uhm, I’ll be home soon… I went out to bury my love…change it to “I went out to bury my love”…uhm…”You know I’ll be back by noon”….
…“I promise I’ll be back by noon”

Edge:

How about, “She said she’d be back by noon”

Bono:

No, it’s cause , uh, you gotta go with this very methodical…(discussion gets too low to hear but Bono seems to be convincing Edge his change is best)

Bono:

Okay we’re just gonna put in those lyrics really quickly. Is that an easy one to put in?
Ah-ah-um, just so that you know, I was looking for the, the, not the guitar to be turned up but more, to give it a little more weight, the sound. So you can take the guitar down a little bit in my ears.

Voice:

Uh-huh, okay, I was thinking…(?)

Bono:

“I went out to bury my love. I promise I’ll be back…”

(Whispering to himself as he scans autocue)—Jesus don’t you wake up, Jesus I’ll be home…

(To autocue person) I’ve gone out, don’t, don’t worry, eh, but I’ve gone actually do it there…eh…yep…okay
Alright, ready to go
Okay

Edge:
singing “Ah-hah”

Bono:

Okay it’s purty. C’mon now. Somebody give a big signal when we’re ready.
We’re ready, tape is rolling, Terry-world is go.

And Edge is lit somewhere, Bruce, isn’t he? Cause Adam looks a lot brighter but I don’t know why.
Okay, when you’re ready.
Yeah, same thing again, I think I can do better on that.

 (Edge rehearsing his ah-ah-ahs)

And if you turn up the voice I won’t be so close to the microphone head.
Okay, ready to go?
Okay.

Edge:
Ah-oh-oh-ha-ah

Bono:
Ah, Edge…
And you know when we’re finished you should take the lyrics off the autocue—just place the camera and as it goes down I think we use the…the lyrics might be a beautiful thing in the…big ?
Okay…I mean I would do it as a separate take, a whole take of that you can do it later when we’re gone.
Alright, ready?
Waiting for Larry
Okay, last take and then City Of Blinding Lights

Larry:

To be that extraordinary and that ordinary was his real gift'

Actually a friend of mine was the taper on this one.  She was so happy that it turned out as well as it did.  It's fun to listen to.  Makes me smile...
