Discothèque - DM TEC Club Mix
« on: April 11, 2009, 03:43:34 PM »
[Nothing unpredictable. I changed a couple things from the lyrics listed for the other versions based on what I hear. If you don't like my take, you can just change them to what the other versions say.]

You can reach
But you can't grab it
You can hold it, control it
No, you can't bag it

You can push
But you can't direct it
Circulate, regulate, oh no
You cannot connect it

You know you're chewing bubblegum
You know what that is
But you still want some
'Cause you just can't get enough
Of that lovie dovie stuff

(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)

You get confused
But you know it
Yeah, you hurt for it, work for it: love
You don't always show it

Let go
Let go
Discothèque

Let go
Let's go
Let's go

Discothèque

You want to be the one
But you know you're someone else instead
You want to be the song
Be the song that you hear in.. head

Love / Heaven in your heart
You want heaven in your heart

Love / You want heaven in your heart
Love / You want heaven in your heart
You want heaven in your heart
Love...

It's not a trick
'Cause you can't learn it
It's the way, it don't pay, that's okay
'Cause you can't earn it

You know you're chewing bubblegum
You know what that is
But you still want some
'Cause you just can't get enough
Of that lovie dovie stuff

Let go
Let go
Discothèque

Go go
Go go
Discothèque

Love... ooh...

But you take what you can get
'Cause it's all that you can find
But you know there's something more
But tonight, tonight, tonight
You don't mind

Oh, soul...

I, I can't, get
I can't,
It's not enough
I can't, get it
I can't, not eno-
I can't get it,
I can't, not enough
Not enough I can't, I can't
I, I can't get it, I, not, not

Love...

(I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)
(I...I...I can't)

I...I...I can't find fault with your take.  :D Nice job. Great to see these lyrics posted.

I like to put in the "ahs" and "ha's" like at 2:08 and 3:46 but that's just me.

At 2:38 I've always had a problem with the "You want heaven" sequence. I can't hear Bono saying "heart" in 2 of the lines--

You want heaven in your heart
You want heaven in your
You want heaven in your
You want heaven in your love

Just nit-picking cause this is a great part during this mix. Some pretty sophisticated lyrics for such a crappy song in a total failure of an album. Heh?   ;D

Yeah, those "heaven in your heart" bits are hard enough to hear with the other vocals laid over them and everything.
I was referring mainly to two lines:

- Where the lyrics on this site say "It's the way you don't pay, that's okay" I've always heard it more like "It's the way it don't pay, that's okay" But I think that's because I make more sense of that version, so I'm projecting my own thoughts on it instead of hearing a difference. The book "U2: The Complete Songs" says it the first way.

- Biggest difference in my interpretation, "But tonight, tonight, tonight..." I've always heard the next words as "you don't mind" where all the other transcriptions say "an old man"??? If you ask me, that's just crap. The songbook doesn't list the line because it only has the words to the album version.

These are differences in how I hear all versions of the song, not just this one.

1) "It's the way you don't pay, that's okay - 'cause you can't earn it" = love/salvation, can't be bought.

2) old man - one of the mixes had this pretty clear. then again live sometimes he signs "you're mine" (vertigo discotheque at least).

I had this cranked up loud on my car stereo and I heard - it definitely is "it's the way you don't pay." Feel free to change that in my transcription above. (As well as throw in the "ah"s and "ha"s).

I still have to really stretch to hear "an old man." Maybe "I don't mind"? What would "an old man" mean, anyway?
"But you take what you can get 'cause it's all that you can find, but you know there's something more. But tonight, tonight, tonight, an old man."

re: the old man thing (dunno, that's what was up there before me and I couldn't hear anything different) - I'm beginning to lean towards "you're all mine". I can hear that in the discotheque mix from 90-00.

I can hear it that way too.
