Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own
U2 18 Vertigo/05
Live from Milan
This next song's for my father, Bob
And he thought he was Italian
All he listened to was the opera
And his son grew up and wanted to live the opera
Tough
You think you’ve got the stuff
You’re telling me and anyone
You’re hard enough
Don’t have to put up a fight
You don’t have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don’t have to go it alone
And it’s you when I look in the mirror
And it’s you when I don’t pick up the phone
Sometimes you can’t make it on your own
We fight
All the time
You and I, that’s alright
We’re the same soul
I don’t need
I don’t need to hear you say
That if we weren’t so alike
You’d like me a whole lot more
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don’t have to go it alone
And it’s you when I look in the mirror
And it’s you when I don’t pick up the phone
Sometimes you can’t make it on your own
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I know that we don’t talk
I'm sick of it all
But can you hear me when I sing
You’re the reason I sing
You’re the reason why the opera is in me
Well, hey-hey now
Still got to let you know
A house still don’t make a home
Don’t leave me here alone
And it’s you when I look in the mirror
And it’s you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can’t make it on your own
Sometimes you can’t make it
Best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can’t make it on… your own
Vidi o mare quant’e bello
Spiri tantu sentimento
?
?
Guardo, guardo, cielo, cielo
?
Thanks to laura2312 for the Italian transcription and translation
She has some interesting comments.
"Those are not the right lyrics, but he gets pretty close to the target!
Then he goes mumbling, it's not properly words. Maybe at the end it goes guarda, guarda, cielo, cielo which is "I look, I look, the sea, the sea" but I wouldn't say that for sure."
The starting of the song (Torna A Suriento) (and the most famous part of it) is really those two lines:
"Guarda il mare com´e bello!
Spira tanto sentimento."
Translated,
literally:
"Look at the sea, how it's beautiful! It inspires a lot of feeling"
...this translation is awful, I have to admit it...
To give you the proper idea, the text is like if a person invites another to
look at the sea and says that that vision is very touching, so that
makes sensation rise inside yourself.
Yeah, that's what those lines tell.
Actually "Surriento" is the way people from Naples and surroundings call the city that gives the title to the song. Search on the Internet for "Sorrento", the proper Italian name of that town.
The song is written in an ancient Italian we no longer use, except maybe
the people from Naples when they use their regional dialect."
