2021 Release(s)?
« on: February 22, 2021, 12:50:12 PM »
What, besides the Apollo subscription gift, is on the horizon to be released in 2021?

I know, based on recent comments, that a new album is unlikely.  But what else could there be? Will we finally see the Joshua Tree Tour DVD released?

On September 21, 2020, in the ATYCLB Super Deluxe forum topic . . . . . Aaron wrote the following:
The Joshua Tree film is being shown in theaters before they release it on any home video format. And it's not currently scheduled due to the COVID-19 issues and theaters in some countries not even open.  I expect we won't see it until next year at the earliest.

If and when THE JOSHUA TREE 2017 ever sees the home video light of day (and with each passing moment, that seems less likely to me, now that we're four years on down the line), it damn well better be on Blu-ray (4K UHD, preferred) and not this damnable antiquated 480p standard definition crap they foisted on us with the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE fan club gift. Between that and all the missing tracks from their anniversary release of ATYCLB, U2 let me down on the media front quite a bit last year.

Personally, I'd love to see SDE releases of either Rattle & Hum, Pop, or both.

Since a lot of artists are releasing experimental "quarantine" albums, this might be a good year to finish and release Songs of Ascent.

Heck, even a cover or two would be something.

Rattle and Hum is problematic. Paramount owns the movie. And all the associated footage. U2 owns the album. And all the associate music. Each can release new versions and new formats of what has been previously released, but cannot make substantial changes to it (i.e. new content) without the other party agreeing to it. And it sounds like they haven't been able to reach those agreements in the past.

I'm told we came close to getting a 30th anniversary edition of Rattle and Hum, but at the last minute they couldn't make it work. But that likely explains that weird Rattle and Hum promo we got that year from the fan club anyway.

Right now I wouldn't hold out hope of a new version of Rattle and Hum anytime soon.

Short answer? Nothing. They haven't submitted anything for Record Store Day yet. Universal has nothing in the upcoming releases lists. And my contacts tell me nothing is planned for a physical release at the moment.

The Joshua Tree film will likely happen when theatres start to reopen. Its not scheduled yet though. Still too much chaos in the world. The feeling is that this is the way to sell a musical film these days. Theatre release, promote the film, get the general community interested, and then do a release.  It's a new blueprint that's been followed lately by a number of artists including the Cure and Depeche Mode. Anton has confirmed the film is finished, and is with the band. It was originally supposed to be out last June, and would have been supported with a unique audio release (EP) to digital services as well. I'm guessing we'll see it next spring, with a release in the summertime for home video. Which clears up the fall for an album release. And pushing it to next spring means they can tie into the hype surrounding 35 years of The Joshua Tree.

Record Store Day will probably happen.  U2 love participating. It's pushed back to June this year. The submission deadline is the end of March, so although U2 hasn't submitted a release yet, they likely will. They are always late to submit.

There is stuff coming in the Fall. A lot of effort is being put into a number of different projects. But what I'm aware of is not audio / video related.

Oh and maybe we'll get lucky and "Skyscrapers" will finally come out. Bono recorded his bits back in 2011. And it appears the song is now a DMX / Bono / Swizz Beatz song, and Kanye's been dropped out of it. And Larry Mullen just featured on the new Alice Cooper album, "Detroit Stories" although I suspect it too was an older song from the previous Cooper album.

Gladly purchased "We Are the People" today from Qobuz.  Any word if digital retailers will eventually get Bono's Citizen Penn song?

I like it. It starts off with a great TJT vibe and then evolves into a more modern pop tune. The lyrics and message are inspiring and uplifting. I'm sure some will say it's just more post-2000 fodder, but I've loved most of the post 2000 stuff, so that's just fine by me. ;)

Personally, I like “We Are the People” a hundred times more than “Eden: To Find Love”.

Colby, thanks for your feedback.
Travis . . . . . I actually prefer Eden: To Find Love.  It reminds of the style of music from Rattle & Hum b-sides like Dancing Barefoot, Hallelujah (Here She Comes) and A Room At The Heartbreak Hotel with the way the percussion instruments sound.  I also love the guitars and Bono's singing.  I am surprised the Citizen Penn documentary is not mentioned on Sean Penn's Wikipedia page.  It's not listed on his Wikipedia filmography page either.  If the Citizen Penn soundtrack exists, I can't find it anywhere [at least right now I can't].  And I can't find any place to buy Eden: To Find Love as a digital download.

Aaron, you probably already know this . . . . . but in case you don't, on u2songs.com, on the news webpage titled Bono Contributes song to Citizen Penn Documentary . . . . . . when I tried to play the Song Audio via YouTube, it stated:  Video unavailable   This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Lakeshore Records on behalf of Island Records and Polydor Records

Not much I can do I'm afraid. The song hasn't been released outside of the documentary and no version can be shared direct from that.  The record company is shutting down videos of it by itself on YouTube, so at this point I'll probably not replace it...I'll give them a few days to do that...
