Zooropa SHM - 2011 Master ?
« on: November 04, 2018, 04:08:32 AM »
https://www.u2songs.com/news/u2_catalog_to_be_released_on_shm_cd_for_the_first_time_in_japan and
https://www.u2songs.com/discography/u2_zooropa_album_original_release say that a 2011 master has been used for the release of the SHM CD. However, https://www.u2songs.com/discography/u2_achtung_baby_reissued_album_20th_anniversary says that the 2011 release (and Zooropa was a part of it) used a "sonically slightly tweaked original master". Hence, the band did not call it a remaster.

Question: was there a real 2011 master of Zooropa or is it the same as with Achtung Baby and the SHM CD uses the original master? Thanks for clarifying.

The 2011 release was the same track lengths as the original, but they tweaked the volume in places. That's why we call it a "2011 master" - the band was not referring to it as a remaster, but changes were made to the volume in places.

This means Zooropa received the same treatment like Achtung Baby. If I got the corresponding U2songs article correctly the term "2011 master" is only used by U2songs, isn't it?

Achtung Baby had additional work done on it. The track splits were not the same. Zooropa was the exact same track lengths, and only the volume was tweaked. So no, I'm not sure the same treatment was done on Zooropa. The band themselves have said that it is not a remaster, and it was not sold as a remaster. Thus we use the term master instead.  As there were tweaks made. The SHM release was supposed to have used the 2011 version.  I can confirm tonight.

The semantics of this drives me crazy. Achtung Baby and Zooropa were mastered by Arnie Acosta in 1991 and 1993, respectively. If both of these titles underwent "Mastering Directed by The Edge" again in 2011, then they are, by definition, REmastered.

But yes, I know they weren't marketed this way. I guess the important thing is that the remastering for AB and Zooropa was done to a much smaller degree than it was for the earlier titles in the reissue series.

... and as I learned from Aaron's post the master which was used in 2011 was a slightly tweaked version of the original master. Hence, they you can call it the 2011 Master, however, not a 2011 Remaster. Subtle, but true.
