Every Breaking Wave Single
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:17:27 PM »
I have finally found a copy of the Every Breaking Wave promo single at a (somewhat) reasonable price. I am very curious to know whether they edited the ending or just slapped the album track on a CD-R with the lead-in to California intact. If it's the latter, I guess I wasted my money.

I think I probably wasted my money anyway, since the promo is coming from Europe and probably won't get here until after the digital single is released on January 12, assuming that date holds.

Radio1 Greece is the only place I can find any reference to a commercial single release. They are listing EBW as a UK single release on January 12.

Do you want to know now, or would you prefer to wait?  ;)

My Itunes album version ends with that synth sound riff and goes directly into the first church bell sound of California, as you mentioned. If I turn up my PC volume all the way, I can hear a very tiny bit of that church bell at the end of the single version. It's very soft but it's there.

Is that what you were looking for? I'm certainly not an expert with discography stuff...

Yeah, that's what I was asking, whether or not they faded that transition.

Thanks.

On YouTube, I found the video below.
1.  Is the music in this video the same as the music on the Every Breaking Wave Single?
2.  Does anyone know the exact date it was recorded?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryB68ynGgjI

I don't know the procedure that makes the above an actual link.
I only know how to copy and paste it to this post.

It was recorded last October when they were doing the promo dates in London at the BBC. It was shown on 60 Minutes in Australia but was also made available to other media outlets.

The promo single seems to just contain the album version of the song. No details on what might be on a commercial single. There's supposed to be some sort of digital release on Monday.

The transition is not faded on the UK promo CD, the French promo CD, or this other promo CD.

No sign of anything on iTunes in the UK, or Qobuz yet for a new single.  Today in the UK was the date publicized on the promotional single released in the UK.  Anyone seeing anything?  It should be past midnight now.

I finally received my UK promo CD this week.

The promo version is very slightly edited from the album version:

At the end of the album version, you hear the bell and then (what sounds like) rain, which cuts off very abruptly as it is continuous with the intro to California.

At the end of the promo version, you hear the bell and then the rain, which is quickly but noticeably rolled off, then about 2 seconds of silence.

Track length is 4:12.16 for the album version and 4:15.04 for the promo version.

I would still hope that if they ever release a commercial single, they would go back to the original master tape and eliminate those transition sound effects altogether.

Today on Radio FM in Dublin, the host claimed Bono had sent him a new version of "Every Breaking Wave" for a first play, they hadn't even sent it around yet.  It's the acoustic version, redone in studio, with some additional instrumentation.  You can hear it here:

http://www.todayfm.com/player/listen_back/3/17634/22nd_January_2015_-_The_Ian_Dempsey_Breakfast_Show_Part_2

Skip in about 7 minutes and you'll find the preamble to playing it.  It's section 2 of the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show.  That stream is low quality 64kbs.

Also rumours have started about the announcement of a third wave of live shows on Monday.  Maybe the single release will happen then as well?  Cross your fingers.  :0)
