Rockin' in the free world (UJam, Melbourne 2006)
« on: December 01, 2006, 06:26:07 AM »
Hi all,

This is what I could make of this remarkable rendition, I'm missing two bits, anyone with any clues?

Rockin' In The Free World
Written by Neil Young
As performed by ‘Ujam’, Melbourne 2006-11-17

Vedder - Bono - Both

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
in the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
I don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forgive ‘em,
any way I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

There’s colors on the street
Green, white and gold
A thought you can’t defeat
A thought that’s never growing old
You can write it on your t-shirt
Or write it on your heart
[…]
Making a start
You used your vision of visibility
If you wanna make poverty history

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I’m over on the left
I’m over on the right
But we both stand together
Stand together tonight
[/i]

You can write it on your t-shirt
Write it on your heart
It’s a long long road, but tonight we make a start
You gotta trust your vision or the visibility
You wanna make poverty history

Yeah yeah, oh yeah
Yeah yeah, oh yeah

I’m a singer in a band
I’m a father of four
I do what I can
I wanna do more

And when she wakes up in the night
At home my little girl
I wanna save her heart
As I want for the world

You gotta trust your vision of visibility
If you wanna make poverty history

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
<Spoken>
Good evening, good night
Pearl Jam and U2, we offer you ‘Ujam’
To the Make Poverty History campaigners:
We salute you

Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world

<Spoken>
Politicians have to do
What you tell them to do

Go screaming from the mountain
Go screaming in the air
Go screaming from a bill board
Go screaming everywhere
No […]
No labour to the world
Of the visibility
We wanna make poverty history

Rockin' in the free world
Rockin' in the free world

Great song! Thanks for posting this.

Nice job, btw.

I just started playing with this. I got a great looking video with excellent audio but can only play it on my VLC player which is too hard to navigate back and forth. My mp3 is less clear.

Maybe I can help with your first spot --

You can write it on your t-shirt
Or write it on your heart
If they gave them a hope
Then maybe they’d start

Hopefully more later:)

This is what I got from the TV video. Still can't get that second spot. But I bet Brad can. :)

[Bono=Normal; Vedder=Italics; Both=Bold]

It's a beautiful day
Yea!

There are colors on the street
Red, white, and blue
There are people shufflin’ their feet
There are people sleeping in shoes
Oh there’s a warning sign in the road ahead
There’s a lot of people singing we’d be better off dead
I don’t feel like Satan but I am to them
So I gotta forgive ‘em any way I can

Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Oh

There’s colors on that street
Green, white, and gold
A thought you can’t defeat
A thought that’s never growing old

You can write it on your t-shirt
Or write it on your heart
If they gave them a hope
Then maybe they’d start
You used your vision over visibility
You wanna make poverty history

Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world

I’m over on the left
I’m over on the right
But we both stand together
Stand together tonight

Write it on a t-shirt
Write it on your heart
It’s a long, long road
But tonight we make a start
You gotta trust your vision over visibilty
If you wanna make poverty history

Yeah, yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, yeah
Oh yeah
Yeah, yeah
Oh yeah
Yeah, yeah

I’m a singer in a band
I’m a father of four
I do what I can
I wanna do more

And when she wakes up in the night
I hold my little girl
I want to save her heart
As I want for own the world (?)

You gotta trust your vision over visibility
If you wanna make poverty history

Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world

Thanks to Scarlet for the audio rip from the dvd! Made a couple tiny corrections...tho I still can't get Bono's 2nd iffy part.

From Wikipedia:

"Pearl Jam released a cover of the song for the 2007 film, Reign Over Me, [4] which took its name from The Who's song. Pearl Jam's version is played over the end credits of the movie.

Star Adam Sandler approached Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder after a 2006 concert in Los Angeles about covering the song for the film.[5] Vedder was reluctant at first, however he agreed to do the cover only after talking to Roger Daltrey, who called Vedder and gave his approval.[6]

The song made a world premiere on the KISW-FM radio station on January 8, 2007. The track appears on Pearl Jam's 2006 Christmas Fan Club single along with a cover of "Rockin' in the Free World" featuring Bono and The Edge from U2. The cover was also made available as a single download from iTunes, although credited solely to Pearl Jam, not The Who. Pearl Jam's version of the song peaked at #32 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart."

The B-side version is exactly like the free dvd version with some cuts:

1. "It's a beautiful day" is cut at the beginning
2. The song ends lyrically after the  four "keep on rockin" choruses by Bono and Vedder. Guitar solos end the song.
This version runs 5:26
