U2 on Clockwork Orange
« on: April 22, 2007, 11:28:13 AM »
I just read a BBC article that talks about Bono and Edge working on a Broadway musical of Spiderman.  In the article there is reference to compositions for a production of A Clockwork Orange.  Does anybody know about that?  Any chance there are some recordings out there?

Cheers

There is only one released song from the score that Bono and The Edge did for the Royal Shakespeare Company's 1990 production of "A Clockwork Orange".  You can find "Alex Descends Into Hell For A Bottle Of Milk / Korova 1" as a B-side to The Fly single.

This is one of my favorite subjects of discussion, as I think Alex Descends is a brilliant piece.  I pray for a day when the entire score gets released.  It will probably never happen, unfortunately.

You can hear the entire thing only if you watch a taped copy of the production, and as far as I know, the only one that exists for public viewing is held by the Royal Shakespeare Company Library:

If someone knows otherwise, please post!

Naturally, I'd much rather hear just the score (as sitting through a VHS video of a 3 hour play isn't quite my cup of tea), but if I'm ever in Stratford-Upon-Avon and have three hours to kill, well...  maybe I'll drop in and give it a go.

Thanks for that info! No boots available for this video???...:)

Only 3 pounds for 2 to watch...that's a tough job to convince your wife or girlfriend to sit through that...

Someone should plot an elaborate, risky, Mission Impossible-style scheme to infiltrate the RSC Library in the dead of night...  drop down through the ceiling, grab the tape, replace it with a copy of the Star Wars Christmas Special, and return to the top-secret base camp to copy and distribute it for U2 fans worldwide...

What?  It's a good idea!

I've actually been fortunate enough to hear Alex Descends played LOUD on an arena speaker system.  It was the most unexpected thing - the local professional box lacrosse team used the song a few years ago as part of their pregame player introduction.  My girlfriend (also a big U2 fan) and I heard the opening rumble of the song and immediately looked at each other.  Our jaws were both practically on the floor.  Really, it was a surreal moment - arena lights out, spotlights on, crowd cheering...  and hearing this B-side that you've always thought would make a killer introduction to something...  making a killer introduction!

Someone in charge of marketing that team HAD to be a U2 fan - nobody else would even know enough about that song to use it like that!

I totally agree.

I really really hope one day we could have the complete score. Some U2 fan please start apply a job in that library!

Box lacrosse is basically lacrosse played on a hockey rink-sized field, as opposed to field lacrosse, which is played on a much larger field (and what college teams normally play).  The local box lacrosse team is the Philadelphia Wings.

Anyway, someone who works for them is definitely a U2 fan.  It was really surprising to hear Alex Descends.  I was used to more hard/metal rock introductions from previous years, using songs like "Fuel" by Metallica, for example.

I decided to search for "Alex Descends into Hell" on Youtube.  Here are two vids:

As it turns out, I've heard this somewhere before.  Did it get included on the work Edge did on The Captive?
