Samples
« on: June 24, 2016, 06:39:05 PM »
Hi,

Thanks for posting that article on samples. Seconds was probably the first sample I had heard but in just a few years I had heard Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys. If U2's use of samples was a whisper by that point, PB was a scream with no remnants of an original album to speak of. Here is a website dedicated to the samples of that album.

If you haven't listened to it please do because it an  interesting study. Closer by NIN is also an interesting sample study.

Not only have I listened to Paul's Boutique, i've visited the street corner in NY where the cover was photographed. A friend of mine is a bit of a fan so I've kept up with the Beasties over the year.  Also was a big NIN nails fan back when Closer first came out.  So I agree, both are fascinating in that respect.

For someone of U2's artistry I think sometimes they have dropped the ball with sound collages and samples. The word 'clunky' comes to mind. The one that was written about on this site (Seasons in the Sun etc. from I & E) was actually flawed for U2's level of artistry and resources. Some awkward gaps and such.
