Title: A 1989 Rarity I don't Think This Site Has Ever Mentioned!
Post by: God, Part II on July 26, 2012, 04:49:49 PM
Some British hip-hop duo named Kiss AMC made this little track called "A Bit of" (a.k.a. "A Bit of...U2"):

Kiss AMC - A Bit of U2 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nI9oyLUPxI)

Kiss AMC - A Bit of U2 (Dance Floor Slide) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS5dNhdcmAw)

Kiss AMC - A Bit of U2 (Amazonian Mix) (HQ) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJKlGjaCybo)

I bought the CD single new from Amazon.co.uk's Marketplace two seconds after I heard this!

It's a sample of U2's New Year's Day.  It was one of the first times that U2 allowed a sample of their work to be used as a sample in another performance, so I guess that makes it noteworthy.

There's hundreds of songs out there that samples U2 material these days.  They are as numerous as cover versions.  The site doesn't really track either, unless U2 is credited in the actual artist name (as in the case of LMC vs U2 and Musique vs U2).  We also list "Re-Wired" because of the label ties to U2.  What little that is tracked is listed under "Oddities" in the discography.  If someone would like to go through and start making a list of all the sampled tracks they can find I'd be happy to include it in a future version of the page...

Aaron.

Ah, thank you, Aaron, for giving me clarity on why some of these sampled tracks merit mention here and others don't!  And, yes, if anyone knows of any others that actually sample U2 (rather than just covering a track of theirs), as a collector, I'd love to know of them.

Just a couple off the top of my head...

On and On by Girl Talk has a sample of WOWY
Landslide by Harmonix is built around a sample of WTSHNN
The Negativeland tracks of ISHFWILF
Lost and Found by DJ Shadow samples Sunday Bloody Sunday
This is the Remix by Girl Talk samples Sunday Bloody Sunday as well.
There were the before mentioned "Rewired" by Jeep Grrlz, "Take Me to the Clouds Above" by LMC vs U2 and "New Year's Dub" by Musique vs U2
Oakenfold used his remix of Lemon in two Grace songs - I think it was "Orange" and "Skin on Skin".

I've got a bunch of things listed at home.  New Year's Day has been sampled a lot if I remember correctly...

I tend not to mention all of them because there's just so many and a lot of them are hard to figure out if it's an actual release, or if it's just some third party thing that's been uploaded to the internet.  There's been a number of DJ produced 12" records that feature U2 vs some other artist...and sometimes the samples are integral to the song and sometimes not so much and you'd barely be interested in the little blip of U2.

and one i forgot when doing the original listings:
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" by Saul Williams samples from the original if I remember the liner notes correctly - that's Larry at the start of it all...

I guess that's where I wasn't as clear as I should have been; for my personal interests, I'd only be interested in tracks released on CD or vinyl, not that weird internet upload stuff (of which you're quite right--they're endless!).

But even the CD / Vinyl stuff is endless. A lot of self pressed stuff going on, and it's a little confusing since there usually ends up being and endless selection of mixes and formats lol.

So I tried to keep it reasonable and touch on a few things. Once we rebuild the site there will be more time to look at documenting some of these. Putting much more focus on catching all the releases with actual new recordings rather than looking at the samples.  But you never know. They've always been out there on my radar...

Which, I agree, is exactly where it should be.  But if anyone wants to drop some more titles with samples here, with thanks to Aaron for the ones he linked, please feel very free to do so!  :D

Check out the song "Free" by Bacon Popper...and "Only Me" by Hyper Logic.  Both use NYD.

Also check out "Alien Groove Sensation" which is by Naked Funk.  U2 sampled it for "Do You Feel Loved".  It's insane just how much got sampled...
