I thought that I'll Go Crazy only became available on November 21, not the same day as Moment of Surrender.

Since you include a note about MOS being previously available officially on YouTube, you may as well note that Crazy was also previously available on Artificial Horizon.

looks like you have it all.  although as mentioned, the Wide Awake in Europe tracks were spread out over a couple of days and didn't all go out at once.

I can no longer find a link to the story about Jay-z and U2 doing SBS, but it was up there for 24 hours.  It was around December 10 - 12, as I was in the UK at the time going to Arcade Fire shows...

And I believe it can only be one of two dates.  Either the first NZ show or the first Australian show.  I'm pretty sure that Jay-Z didn't do the duet the other nights leading up to Sydney.

They also streamed four tracks from the Rose Bowl concert in July 2010. The files I have were "created" on July 21, but I don't recall when they put them up or took them down. I had started a thread but it must have been lost in the crash.

The tracks were Magnificent, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Elevation, and I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight. Bitrate was 320 kbps. These same tracks were also available on a promo CD.

I'm going to create a page in the discography for all of these.  They aren't necessarily "releases", however, I would like to keep track of stuff they stream.  So all the info above is great stuff...

Sunday Bloody Sunday (Live Auckland, November 25, 2010+Jay-Z) [U2.com]
 ;)

Slaneman, maybe I'm dense, but I'm not getting the wink.  Is there are link somewhere?

I missed this file when it was released, but I have since found a copy.  Does anyone have the original file from U2.com?  I mean completely unmodified.  Was it just a numbered mp3 like the rest of them?

I'm going to create a page in the discography for all of these.  They aren't necessarily "releases", however, I would like to keep track of stuff they stream.  So all the info above is great stuff...

Aaron, I'd argue that these are in fact legitimate releases.  I see them to be the equivalent of of a fan club CD and an iTunes exclusive combined.  The files are available in download form only and to fan club members.  I say that they warrant a different section from other free downloads like RAC remix of Magnificent or Richard Vission's remix of I'll Go Crazy, which authorized U2 releases that were (are?) available to the general public on these artists' respective websites.

The ones that have been made available via download I'll definitely be capturing in the main discography.

The ones I mention as not necessarily "releases" are the ones which are streaming only, and are not available for download, at least on the surface.  Things like Sunday Bloody Sunday, Wide Awake in America and Soon, were streamed, but the intention was not to have them available for download.  Obviously one can figure out ways of getting to these files to keep them, but it isn't the intention of u2.com that these be downloaded...

Thanks for info!  ;)  My file was labeled as 2011-05-1X - now I know what X is.  ;D

Great to collect info about u2.com streams, but what about other sites? What about official stream of Pasadena concert? Some versions slightly vary from official DVD/BD.

I'm going to reach out here...
I'm a fully paid-up subscriber to u2.com but missed Soon when it was streaming - a two-day window isn't much! I'm wondering about the original unmodified "numbered" mp3 that was streamed - as Aaron said, not intended for download on the surface, but if you know what you're doing...
I know it's on YouTube, etc, but you know it's not the same:)
Here's hoping...

Bono's backing vocals appear on both Path To Zero (Radio Edit) and Path To Zero (Collage) found here. (http://www.publicmediaservice.org/2011/07/path-to-zero-jonathan-elias/) Neither track appears on the Path To Zero album, just the longer full version. They are 320 kbps MP3. A direct download link won't work, but I was able to grab them from my Safari cache.

Hello --

What program do you use in order to rip the streaming audio? For video I use Download Helper for Firefox, but I haven't been able to find a nice one for audio files. The ones I've used had less-than-stellar results...

Thanks for your help!

I use an app called Audio Hijack Pro. But even the free version Audio Hijack should do the job. I believe it gives you the option of recording in an uncompressed format like .wav but only under 10 minutes each time. Which should be fine for a couple songs. But look it up to be sure.

I use Replay Media Catcher to capture audio streams. It captures the stream digitally in its native format rather than recording it so there's no loss of quality.

I will give both a try, but I think Brad's tip is closer to what I was looking for. Got a bit disappointed due to some apps that recorded the file with bad results.

Streams on u2.com are delivered by HTTP. They are simple to save once you have the URL. I use a program called URL Snooper to get the URL. Then, any download manager should be able to download the file. The Firefox Add-on DownThemAll is my choice.

I'm still annoyed I missed Soon :(

If anyone knows the source, I'll update it.

I've done the homework for you and listened to bootlegs of the 8/14 and 8/15 shows and I have some interesting info.

The beginning and end of the 8/14 bootleg match the beginning and end of the track uploaded by U2.com, so it's safe to have it down as being from 8/14/2009 in London. However, the first verse includes a slight change in lyrics courtesy of the 8/15 show, presumably because he messed it up on 8/14. On 8/14, he sings "in a place of no company... or sufferecy" (I can't for the life of me make out what he says there), but on 8/15 he sings "in a place of no consequence... or company" and he sings those words in the same style as he did on what was uploaded to U2.com.

So it's definitely 99.9% the 8/14/2009 show, apart from that one line, which came from 8/15/2009.

I couldn't sense anything else mixed in because I listened to them both simultaneously and at the same speeds and didn't hear any other differences. However, I'm not musically technical so I can't tell if anything of that sort was changed, but it didn't appear to be.

I can also send the files to anyone who wants to take a listen themselves, but perhaps only as an .mp3 because they're too large to email as uncompressed.

Yeah, that is interesting.  I love it when someone else pays attention to little details and makes the effort to figure stuff out.  I do this many times myself.  Most people don't care about these kinds of things.  But for people like us . . . . . these kinds of details can sometimes be important . . . . . even if figuring them out is a pain-in-the-ass.  Thanks for the effort, u2hmtmkmkm.
Title: Re: u2.com streaming unreleased or rare songs
Post by: hmtmkmkm on June 20, 2012, 12:41:33 AM
No worries. It came about because I was importing the tracks to iTunes with the dates in parentheses next to the name of each track and I realised that song didn't have a date yet. And normally u2wanderer is the best place for that info, so it's good to contribute something to it.

I wanted to listen to it one more time because I thought I detected a new sound on the U2.com version that I hadn't heard before in any other version. For those who have the U2.com download, listen at 3:55 and that sound comes in. I have no idea how to describe it. It's like a high-low-high-low horn of some sort. I thought that was new to this version, but it turns out the bootleg from 8/14 has it anyway, so I can say to the best of my ears, 8/14 is identical, with the substituted line from 8/15.

Totally 'new acoustic version' according to the website and very intriguing recording to say the least. Awesome guitar by Edge. Wow.

Flac sound quality is really excellent. Would love to see details for this recording.

'You'll never walk alone" snippet at the end and a tiny bit of audience sound. Hmmm. Maybe the last part was tacked on somehow because it sounds like a studio recording. If that's a Declan soundboard mix it's brilliant.

Isn't it?!  Discovering this was much more of a score than getting the Tiesto Pride thing.

Also, I started to think that it was strange that U2.com never mentioned this, but then I noticed the release date and realized that it came out during the Duals era of awfulness, not the U22 era of excellence (or at least great improvement).

Thanks again, George. Not sure how this escaped the collective consciousness.

My absolute pleasure!

Now regarding the 24-bit quality, I, too, noticed this, but I wonder if it actually is 24-bit quality or if it was just up-sampled.  Can someone who knows what they're doing check the waveform or do some spectral analysis or whatever it is you need to do to verify this?

I'm not sure how to verify bit depth, but I'll pose the question in one of the audiophile forums and see what I can find out.

Let me add my thanks as well.  It's nice to get something totally out of left field like this!  The string arrangement makes this much more interesting and different than just a typical "acoustic version."

I'd be curious to learn how this all came about.  The edit sounds like it segues from the album version, and as someone else has mentioned, the "you'll never walk alone" line may or may not be a studio recording rather than a live snippet.

Now regarding the 24-bit quality, I, too, noticed this, but I wonder if it actually is 24-bit quality or if it was just up-sampled.  Can someone who knows what they're doing check the waveform or do some spectral analysis or whatever it is you need to do to verify this?

I did some research into this, and it's not as simple as running a spectral analysis.

The simplest algorithm for upconverting 16-bit to 24-bit is to pad the 8 least significant bits with zeroes. The FLAC command line encoder is able to scan FLAC files for these padded or "wasted" bits. More detail on that here. (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=97746&st=0)

I scanned the "full version" using this method and FLAC returned 0 wasted bits, so this appears to be a true 24-bit file.

The problem is, if any noise shaping or other digital signal processing was applied to an unconverted file after the fact, the least significant bits would be non-zero, and would mask the evidence of the upconversion.

I don't see any reason for duplicitousness in this case since they are giving the files away for free, so I would assume these are true 24-bit FLACs.

Thanks for checking that out, Brad!

My concern wasn't that someone was being deceitful.  Rather, I thought that maybe it recorded in 16-bit and then someone simply chose "Save as" and selected 24-bit.  As you point out, though, that would just lead to having padded zeros.

I agree, there's no reason do doubt.

Am I right that this is the highest digital quality U2 release to date?  (The previous, I believe, was Achtung Baby on hdtracks.com in 44100 Hz / 24-bit.)

I can't think of any other compilations with U2 content that have been released in hi-rez, so I think that's correct.

Releases like this are strange.  Apparently this was released in mid-2011, and yet it has gone completely unacknowledged--certainly not acknowledged by U2 or the record company in any official capacity--until George stumbled across it a few days ago.  It's strange that it has been so under-the-radar, especially since it's a quality remix and a unique take on the song.

I feel the same way about "Magnificent (RAC Mix)."  It's as good or better than any of the remixes on the official Magnificent single, and yet as far as I know it hasn't been acknowledged anywhere as an "official" release.

Indeed it is good.

There's a similar lack of acknowledgement for six of remixes of Magnificent that were, as far as I am aware, only available from masterbeat.com or eventvibe.com.

edit: I just went to check masterbeat.com.  Are they no longer selling music?

I haven't confirmed this myself, but this Burma Soldier version of Walk On is apparently a live acoustic performance (Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo, 29th November 2006) with (most of) the crowd noise edited out and the strings added in.

Including the "you will never walk alone" part?  I thought that was only done on the most recent tour.

I've had a recording of that on my drive for a long time now and never put two and two together.  It's the same performance, right down to the ending with the "You will never walk alone".  The version I have sounds like it's from a soundboard, very little to no sound of the crowd in the mix.  The only thing missing is the orcherstral bits...the recording claimed to be from an IEM device, and was actually a recording of the 12-04 show in Saitama.  The acoustic version of "Walk On" is an extra from the other night...
Title: Re: u2.com streaming unreleased or rare songs

Thanks for posting where that came from. I just had to dig out my recordings and check it out myself though I would not have remembered they did this in 2006. Ha.

Yep, definitely Saitama 11-29 and quite an interesting mix job. As far as what was posted on the Burma Soldier website, they must have been using a different meaning for 'new' in 'new acoustic version'.  :)

They edited out Bono's dedication at the beginning and Edge running thru the changes a couple times waiting for Bono...and the audience sounds sneak in here and there during the song. But from what I hear (IEM matrix and audience recordings) it's otherwise unedited. Edge's singing was also the same. And 'all that you can and cannot feel"  ;D

Anyways, it's a very good performance.

Interesting history on this version.  So I guess it belongs in the same category as the Brothers in Rhythm remixes of "Staring at the Sun," which added studio elements to the live version from the PopHeart EP.

URL: http://mr.u2.com/clients/cdn/index.php?f=EveryBreakingWaveRadioMixmp3.zip (http://mr.u2.com/clients/cdn/index.php?f=EveryBreakingWaveRadioMixmp3.zip)

made available: May 2, 2015.  Maybe May 1, given the creation date.

Track name info oddities:
 - U2 website name it : Radio Edit

Artwork is embedded in the file.  This is a first, I think.

Edit: I updated this post as songs were released.

Add The Ocean [Live] as a subscriber-only download.  It's the first track to be made available for download from the (as of this posting) forthcoming "Another Time, Another Place: Live At The Marquee London, 1980" fan club release.

Add 11 O'Clock Tick Tock [Live] as a subscriber-only download.  It's the second track to be made available for download.

Add I Will Follow [Live] as a subscriber-only download.  It's the third track to be made available for download.

Add, all packaged into one, the complete (minus Bono's reflection) subscriber-only album, Another Time, Another Place: Live At The Marquee London, 1980.  With it's availability, the previous three individual tracks were removed from the download list.

All are available from the member's profile page for download.

The version of Mercy streaming on Aaron's playlist downloads as 179362.mp3 (256 kbps).

I converted the old version and this new version to AIFF and ran checksums, and they are identical.

Code: [Select]
Brads-iMac:~ bradhood$ md5 /Users/bradhood/Desktop/Mercy\ 1.aif
MD5 (/Users/bradhood/Desktop/Mercy 1.aif) = ab22191ab7c28d65022cc0debd25e569
Brads-iMac:~ bradhood$ md5 /Users/bradhood/Desktop/Mercy\ 2.aif
MD5 (/Users/bradhood/Desktop/Mercy 2.aif) = ab22191ab7c28d65022cc0debd25e569

That means the two MP3's are identical. Same encoder and everything. That's the only way you would get identical checksums.

very cool, Brad.

...btw - speaking of "Mercy," does anyone know what the highest / best quality source is for the original "studio outtake" version?  I remember finding it in 128Kbps .mp3, back in 2004 or thereabouts, and then years later saw it somewhere in FLAC, but I don't know if it was a legitimate lossless file or if someone upconverted it.  Seems like there may have been a 320Kbps .mp3, at one point, too..., but again, not sure if it was unconverted or not.

Thanks~

AFAIK, the "original" source is a 128 kbps WMA file that was ripped from a CD that was burned from a cassette copy of a pre-release version of HTDAAB.

No, I'm not kidding.

I have a copy of that WMA file somewhere if anyone is interested. It has a lot of hiss because it came from a cassette copy. There are MP3s floating around online that have had the hiss removed, but unless someone knows otherwise, any FLACs or higher-bitrate MP3s online are just re-encodes of that original file.

But the track on R&H was very heavily edited, from what I recall, to the point that it differed substantially from the actual performance.  (Same with All Along the Watchtower).  Interested to see if that remains the case.

About as good as it gets. Bono in a sling singing his guts out and some very talented singers and soloists. I love the scene in the classroom but why this didn't make the movie...even an 'outtake' up on youtube sounds pretty amazing.

I pre-ordered and had to contact support; they sent me a link that worked today. Took me to a personalized download page, like the RHMT download page. The original email from u2.com just sent me to the generic Joshua Tree 2017 page. If you're still waiting to hear back, check your spam folder - the reply was just from "Customer Support" (orderhelp at livenationmerchandise.com).

I assumed that it would be inside the user profile that requires a login on the u2.com shop site. Did you try and clean out your cache or maybe try another browser?

So, to ask Aaron's question, is it the same as the iTunes, Spotify and everywhere else version?

No special edit / fade-in or fade-out?

I assume it's the same as everywhere else. I don't have other sources, so can't do a more formal compare, but it seemed the same as the version on spotify. While it's not tagged, the filename starts with a 16, so pretty confident it's just the standard track 16.

I did compare the RHMT file from the pre-order to the flac I have from 7digital as well as the file from u2.com, and they are all the same. The u2.com download was 256k and the pre-order is 320, but no fade or edit variances.

What's interesting is that the U2.com download version seems like a totally unique remaster. Not only does Bono's voice sound different, but the first instance of 'But I still haven't found' at 0.49 you can clearly hear Edge singing harmony. You don't hear Edge on the album version or the MFiT version. Nice.

Are you comparing these to Rattle and Hum?

That's what I assumed. You can hear Edge harmonizing on the FLAC version I have from Qobuz, but not on R&H.

Yup. Comparing album version of R&H and the MFiT version of R&H album.
On neither can you hear Edge like you can on the Qobuz, which was the U2.com streaming version. I'm glad Brad hears that too.

So where did this version come from. Have they remastered the whole album?
It's not the version sent to iTunes, although that was supposed to be 'adjusted' to sound better. But on this MFiT version I can't hear Edge.

RE: ISHFWILF, this is the same performance but clearly a totally different mix. For one thing, Bono messes up and comes in way early on the "I believe in the Kingdom come..." verse. That part was edited out of the R&H version. This one is overall much less polished and more live. All kinds of new sounds here, including Edge's vocals as others have mentioned.

Audio on this is 64 kbps mono AAC. Really hoping for a version with better audio quality somewhere.

Looking at my file information, I have two captures - one of 60kbps and another of 128kbps.  Looking at the spectral signatures, they both have the same cutoffs, but cutoffs that are consistent with 128, not 60. So that's strange, and seemingly impossible.  Unfortunately, I can't recall how I went about getting these, so I'll defer to you and 60kbps unless I figure out anything else.
