Title: Unforgettable Fire: Re-Release October 2009
Post by: Z000 on July 31, 2009, 02:23:26 PM
Somebody mentioned the next re-releases in a different thread, I think in the IGCIIDGCT (longest abbreviation ever) thread, but I'd rather not tack this onto an already six-page long topic.

Got this message in an e-mail from a U2 collectors' group:
Quote
For those who haven't witnessed a gig from the latest World Tour yet : The official merchandise sold during the concerts is put in a plastic bag with publicity for the next remaster:

"Coming October 2009
The Unforgettable Fire
25th Anniversary Ediution
available on:
- Super deluxe
- Deluxe
- CD
- Vinyl
- Download
Deluxe Editions include B-sides, rare and previously unreleased songs, videos and film footage
More U2 catalogue Remasters to follow..."

I once had a download labeled "The Unforgettable Demos," and have seen bootleg vinyls with similar titles, that included an instrumental version of Unforgettable Fire (song, not album) and an unreleased song called Be There. They were both great, especially Be There, so I hope those tracks are among the rarities.

Darn!  When I saw this new thread I was hoping someone had unearthed the track list for the bonus CD.  I'm sure it's coming soon...

I'm just stoked they're continuing with the remasters! I thought maybe the death of the CD single would have impacted on these somehow. Am rapt they're doing this! Bring on October.

I also have this download, very nice, how long is the Be There song though? Curious to see if its included on the one I have.

I just noticed that there was a news update awhile back that said the same stuff as this post, and had a link to a photo of the bag. Serves me right for not checking.

I've seen teh bag in Barcelona and Dublin now from others who have bought stuff.  But everytime I get near a merch table, they have no bags left.  I did finally pick up a tour book in Dublin which I hope to go through in the next couple of days.  :-)

This reminds me of having read somewhere (on the old Wire u2-list perhaps?) that there are two known outtakes of Be There. Sadly, I have never gotten hold of the second version. Does this ring a bell to anybody?

Amazon and amazon.uk both have the single disc UF remaster up for pre-order, so hopefully the deluxe sets (and track listings) will be appearing soon.

The Unforgettable Fire will be released in the same way as The Joshua Tree, by that I mean the superdeluxe version 2cd+dvd.

As we all know The Joshua Tree came with a live performance from Paris, which I never knew had been taped at all.
Anyone know or guess which Unforgettable Fire Tour concert is likely to appear in this box set?
I hope they're not gonna turn The Unforgettable Fire VHS release as a dvd in this box since it's already included on the U2 Go Home DVD.

From the Interference forum:

u2 tour.de says that Bono and Edge, in an interview with the BBC radio 1, said there will be a old-new song on the remaster. They wrote it with Lanois in 1983 but never finished, and they added vocals 6 months ago. Original title White City, now it's called "(You do your) Disappearing Act".

Interview is here (with the comments about the UF remaster around the 1:38:25 mark):

They also play around :30 to 1:00 of the song...

I agree. I never understood half of what Bono was whispering on that song.  :D

I'm hoping they release the full video from Dortmund--the band was tight, the crowd was intense, you got an excellent early version of Bad, a blazing Electric Co. with Amazing Grace snippet, Bono climbing up to the seats and getting mugged by a cute German girl, leather pants and the extreme bluish streaked mullet, Adam with a lumberjack shirt, Edge with hair....and a wonderful version of TUF---c'mon....release the whole video!!!

Hey, The Joshua Tree re-release had a new-old recording of Wave of Sorrow as well as Desert of Our Love, Rise Up, and Drunk Chicken, which were just old recordings. I figure the only reason the War re-release had just one previously unreleased song was just because they didn't have any others, at least none others worth releasing.

Don't lose hope yet.

This seems pretty official to me.  At the same time, I'm stunned that they didn't put the long single version of Pride on Disc 2.  Also the WAIA tracks are missing and Wire (Celtic Dub).  But if that's really the Live AID version of Bad on there, they obviously had to omit some stuff since that song is so incredibly long.

The DVD sounds interesting too.

Where is the Australian 12" version of Love Comes Tumbling?  ???

I was really banking on that track being on b-sides disc. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.
Title: Re: Unforgettable Fire: Re-Release October 2009
Post by: morgan1098 on September 16, 2009, 01:18:32 PM
Maybe it's possible that a couple of other tracks will find their way onto Disc 2.  I remember that the original "official" track listing for the War reissue only had 10 tracks on disc 2.  The final 2 tracks (the live b-sides from Werchter) didn't start showing up in the track listing until a couple of weeks before the album was actually released.
Title: Re: Unforgettable Fire: Re-Release October 2009
Post by: Z000 on September 16, 2009, 03:21:49 PM
Satellite of Love?? Did they do it live or something? It'd be weird if they have two separate recordings of a cover, especially so far apart.
Would the "unreleased version" of 11 O'Clock be the long version from the Pride single? Because that obviously has been released.
Has anybody ever heard of Yoshino Blossom?
I love new tracks, but I wish there were more originals instead of three covers. But hey, at least they're not remixes.

@Brad: Who's to say that version of Love Comes Tumbling isn't the Australian version?

I agree about the long version of Pride. After first hearing that, the album release didn't feel right any more.
In general, there's a lot of good stuff from this era. They probably could've released two bonus discs of material if they included all the b-sides and alternate versions, plus the unreleased material listed and unlisted.

I'm taking that track list with a grain of salt, not because I'm suspicious of it but just out of principle. It's still early, so even if that's an official press release it's subject to change.
Title: Re: Unforgettable Fire: Re-Release October 2009
Post by: morgan1098 on September 16, 2009, 04:01:08 PM
Satellite of Love and the other cover songs are likely just "snippets" from the Live Aid version of Bad.  So the track listing would actually look like this... only 11 tracks:

1. 11 O'Clock Tick Tock (Unreleased Version)
2. Bass Trap
3. Boomerang I
4. Boomerang II
4. Love Comes Tumbling
6. 60 Seconds In Kingdom Come
7. The Three Sunrises
8. Sunday Bloody Sunday (Live Aid)
9. Bad/Walk on the Wild Side/Ruby Tuesday/Satellite of Love (Live Aid)
10. Disappearing Act (Unreleased Track)
11. Yoshino Blossom (Unreleased Track)

The single version of Pride NEEDS to be on there!

Hello! I hope that isn't really track listing.  ??? Nice to see on CD2 11 O'Clock Long Version & Band Aid Tracks, but where are:
Pride (SV) - they added WTSHNN (SE) to TJT Anniversary, so I think they add this version too
A Sort of Homecoming (Live from Wembley) & Bad (Live)  from Wida Awake. A Sort was on TUF Single so I'm sure they add this also.
4th of July (Long Version)?? - I hope they know that is another edit than album track.  :-\
And Wire (Dub Version) - they add to October CD2 Tomorrow (CG Remix), so they should add this track to TUF re-release also.  :-\

Yoshino Blossom - ??  ??? Maybe Be There official name  ;)

Instead of Live Aid track on CD2 (which should be on DVD) they could add more unreleased tracks and Live tracks - i.e. Indian Summer Sky or Wire.  ::)

From u2.com:
Edit: "a DVD including music videos, a documentary and unreleased live footage from the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour in 1986."
 :( >:( Only.......

"also feature bonus audio material, including two previously unheard tracks from the Slane Castle sessions: 'Yoshino Blossom', and 'Disappearing Act'"
and it's true title...

And: http://www.u2gigs.com/show921.html
"it will be officially released as part of the super deluxe edition of The Unforgettable Fire remaster in late October 2009."
???

Yoshino Blossom - ??  ??? Maybe Be There official name  ;)

The lyrics of Be There give me no reason to believe they'd retitle it Yoshino Blossom, though you never know. I found the download of "War & Unforgettable Fire Demos" that had Be There on it, and it's got another track that's just labeled Untitled Instrumental. I'd expect that one's Yoshino Blossom, if any of the leaked demos are.

And Wire (Dub Version)

I really wish this was on there, because despite buying the NME promo and copying the track from vinyl onto my computer, my best efforts to clean up the digital track don't take away nearly enough of the fuzz and crackle. The older the record, the harder it is to clean all the noise out, and that promo is the oldest one I have.

This will make a huge improvement. You won't believe how good those old vinyls can sound. If you're going to be ripping a lot of albums in your future it might be worth the investment. Or if your mattress is still too lumpy.

I got a 1963 Frank Sinatra LP from Ebay which looked ok but had all kinds of ticks and pops and sounded murky overall. After a cleaning it was amazing. You should even clean new albums before ripping them and store them in proper sleeves. It's not chesp to do it right.

Believe me, this is one of the less expensive record cleaners out there.

The "official" track listing for the War 2-disc was wrong on U2.com up until a few days AFTER the release date.  We have to take what we can get!  :)

So why should we believe this tracklisting any more than the other one?

Um, look at the weblink--it clearly says this is the definitive track listing...duh!  ;)  Seriously, this listing is damn near perfect (the loss of the alternate vocal on "Love Comes Tumbling" being the only obvious oversight, as well as the loss opportunity of "Be There" still MIA), if you ask me, so my fingers are crossed so hard, I've lost blood flow to them.

Yeah! This version of Bonus CD is much, much better! All WAIA tracks + Pride (SV) and 2 mixes of Wire :) Maybe ASOH (Lanois Mix) is the Alternative Live Version?
2 alternative versions of ASOH and LCT would be nice, but that is good. Also the could add something Rare Live - Wire and Indian....  :P
What about Be There - I don't know? Is it from TUF or War Era or something between? It also would be nice.

The content of DVD is strange - there's no concert from TUF era  ??? Maybe Bad or 11 O'Clock, but there only single tracks! Where is Full Dortmund?!!  ;)
If they don't add something better, the could take all only on DVD5, and it will be cweak DVD :/

Where from is this 11 O'Clock Version?  ??? Is this from this concert:
http://www.u2gigs.com/show540.html
If yes, why they don't have more tracks from this festival? Only 1!? Maybe the add other concert instead of Dortmund.......and they do a mistake and write only first track instead of full listing  :D :D

I like this version better than the first released tracklisting. The UF b sides are incredible and always have been. Even though the thinking of the day is to release everything filmed, U2 are showing some restraint in not releasing Dortrumund. From what I rememeber it was a high energy concert but how different is to Live in Paris or UABRS?

From Universal Music Group European New Releases

'The Unforgettable Fire' Remastered

17/09/2009

We are very excited to finally announce the 25th Anniversary release of U2’s fourth album “The Unforgettable Fire”, which will be available internationally in four formats on 26th October 2009.

The special remastered release marks 25 years since the album's original release in October 1984. Recorded at Slane Castle, Ireland, The Unforgettable Fire was the first U2 album to be produced by Brian Eno and Danny Lanois, and spawned two top 10 UK singles – “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” and “The Unforgettable Fire”.

Special formats of The Unforgettable Fire will also feature bonus audio material, including two previously unheard tracks from the Slane Castle sessions: “Yoshino Blossom”, and “Disappearing Act” (a track which the band recently completed), and a DVD including music videos, a documentary and unreleased live footage from the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour in 1986.  The Unforgettable Fire has been remastered from the original audio tapes, with direction from The Edge.

The bonus CD tracklisting is good, 2 previously unreleased tracks, and two rare Wire remixes, I can't complain.

For the DVD,It's disapointing there was no full concert from the period, maybe the November '84 Dortmund concert will get released like the one from Germany in 1983 did.
http://idealcopy.american-data.net//Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=030309992997

Both were broadcast on German TV, so you never know. It looks like there is an ownership issue over the rights.

Overall I am pleased with the bonus tracklisting.  However, I am very disappointed that the alternate vocal version of Love Comes Tumbling is not included.  Unlike some alternate edit of something (like the false start version), it's a true treasure given how unique it is.

What do we suppose the version of A Sort of Homecoming is?  From the same Australian 12"?  It'd sure be odd to include this but not the alternate vocal version of LCT.

I'm not suprised that Maggie's Farm wasn't included, but it is from the TUF era.

I'm glad to see the Wire Dub Mix there.  How did it get called Celtic Dub?  On the NME 7", it's just "Dub Mix".  I always thought that "Celtic Dub" was just a more interesting name made up by bootleggers.

I've never heard of the Kevorkian Mix of Wire.  Where'd that come from?  A sanctioned but unreleased mix?  Does this mean that Wire was at some point being considered as a potential single?  I do remember hearing it on the radio, it was that good.

Regarding the DVD, what a disappointment.  Why not the full Conspiricy of Hope show?  It was pretty short.  And yes, Of course I'd like a full real show.  This is a very underwhelming bonus, given that most of it was already available.

I pretty much agree with George on every point.  ;D

So that 11 O'Clock Tick Tock Video, is this the one from the 1987 Video Sampler Promo?

And hopefully they won't talk over the end of Bad at Live Aid like they did on the Live Aid DVD.

the one from that vhs was from leixlip castle 1980, video footage only, the audio was the studio version...

I agree with you, others versions, are only edit of false start version. But we don't know which version of LCT the remastered  ;) Sometimes they make mistakes, but it's a small chance. Maybe they don't know or don't remember that other version was released? Like October (Soundtrack Remix)...

I'm not suprised that Maggie's Farm wasn't included, but it is from the TUF era.
It's very annoying that they omit every cover on most of theirs releases and even cut out snippets  ??? >:(  Maybe they cut Bad from Live Aid? Thay could release Maggie's Farm from East R. on DVD.  :(

[...]

They chose Conspiracy show without NYD, and with Bad without any snippets  :( Where is SBS from East R.? Where is Sun City? One of the most important song of that tour!  ??? It's very sad.

Why they only have 11 O'Clock from Croke? Look at this site:
http://www.rte.ie/laweb/ll/ll_t19a.html
Quote
"The Jacks Are Back"
U2 return to Croke Park for their first Dublin gig in two years. An audience of almost 60,000 are there to welcome the band back to their home town.
Try to watch the stream from this programme:
rtsp://streaming2.rte.ie/2009/laclips/t19/t19_first_jacks_tv.rm

We could see band comeing on the stage and I Will Follow filmed by 3 or 4 cameras. It's not only one camera from TV, but more camers that could record full show. So TV have I Will Follow, but U2 not ??? Maybe TV or someone else have more songs.

On the other hand is Dortmund. Maybe German TV have some rights over this record? But U2 could put some money for this record. I agree to that Super Deluxe cost much but have a full show UF Tour. Without this it's much worse than TJT SDeluxe. They add many videos, but where is third version of Pride??

I assume the unspecified A Sort of Homecoming is the Danny Lanois Remix morgan1098 mentioned (http://"http://www.u2wanderer.org/rtss/index.php?topic=721.msg3299#msg3299"). Though his source (http://"http://www.u2bat.be/2009/09/22/the-unforgettable-fire-definitive-tracklist/") doesn't list their own source, all the other tracks on their list match up with U2.com's list.

I also agree that we won't know for sure which version of Love Comes Tumbling was remastered, though it's wishful thinking that the alternate vocal version. Given that the version on The Complete U2 was the false start version, I expect we'll get that one again.

For 50 bucks this is a bit of a rip as far as I'm concerned.  Just compare this box to the Joshua Tree box: 3 new songs, 2 very rare songs, an entire new full concert DVD.

UF we just get 2 new songs, 1 hard to fine remix and 5 live songs most of us already owned good quality recordings of before.

Is it a welcome addition to our collection?  Of course.  Is it worth 5 bucks a song/track?  U2 has this habit of screwing its biggest fans and this is another example.

Had to stop watching after he pulled the CD out with his fingertips, assuredly leaving prints all over the disc, then laid it right down on its data side! (*shudder*)  I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to that kind of careless treatment of something so precious.  By the way, totally unrelated, I'm seeing U2 360º tonight in Norman, OK!  I just had to "say" it out loud!!!  ;D

I'm only guessing, of course, but I think the Kervorkian 12" Vocal Remix will sound beefed up, with a longer intro, and will use the album vocal with one small change:

Cold these eyes, I can't believe it
So deep inside a cold fire
Cold, this heart is slow...

becomes

So deep inside a cold fire
Cold, this heart is slow...

so the first line is dropped for some curious reason...  :-X

Just heard the 'new' tracks.

Disappear Here (4:34): nice song except the vocals are recorded in 2009 while the rest was recorded in 1984. This shows the same way as it did on the other 'rediscovered' songs of the 'War' and 'Joshua Tree' remasters.

Yoshino Blossom (3:39): pretty fast song for an instrumental one, better than the other instrumental releases from this era.

Wire (Kevorkian 12" Vocal Remix") (5:12): exactly as Slaneman described; longer and beefed up, except the vocal change is:
Cold these eyes, I can't believe it
 Cold, this heart is slow
The second line is left out...

A Sort Of Homecoming (3:17): Very nice remix by Daniel Lanois, shorter than the album version and starts with a cappella vocals of the 'o come away' bit.

Wire (Celtic Dub Mix) (4:35): never heard this one before, nice remix, at times identical to the Kevorkian Remix.

All in all; nice additions to the bonus disc of The Unforgettable Fire.
Unfortunately, the Australian versions of ASOH and LCT are definitely NOT on this album.

FWIW, Best Buy's site (USA) is listing the super-deluxe set at only 39.99 with free shipping, which blows away amazon's price of $55.  There's a good chance the set will be on sale for 39.99 in Best Buy stores next week, too.

Confirmed; there's a source at the DVDTalk forums that publishes screenshots of Best Buy ads a week early and it's listed there for $39.99.  The weird part (and surely just a flat-out inaccuracy) is that it says 3 CD/2 DVD...yeah, I wish.

Best Buy often packages exclusive bonus discs with their music releases, but yeah, I doubt that will happen with this one.

It would be cool just to get a 1-track bonus disc with the alternate lyric version of Love Comes Tumbling...  :)

EDIT: I just checked out that forum, and it looks like the boxed set has an asterisk by it that reads: "Minimum 3 per store.  No rainchecks."  I'll be sure to get there early!

... and to my surprise, I got an e-mail a few minutes later saying "Your order is ready for pickup."  I went to Best Buy thinking MAYBE they'd get a copy from the back for me, but the shelves were already stocked with tons of the Super Deluxe, Deluxe and Standard versions.  So I guess they're just selling this a day early.  At least my local store (Colorado Springs) is.

Time to take off the shrink wrap and dive in!

Something was screwy with the release date for ALL new releases this week.  I was at four different stores yesterday (two Best Buys, Target, Costco) and they ALL had the "new releases" for Tuesday out and for sale (Target and Costco didn't have U2, but they did have Sting and Michael Jackson, the other two "big" new releases for this week).  Did the record companies and stores get together and switch new release day to Monday for some reason?  Obviously, if they did, not all the stores got the message...

By the way, if you're looking for just the 2-disc deluxe edition, get it from Best Buy by October 31. After that, the price jumps from $19.99 to $29.99. That could well have been the case with Boy, October, and War, but I wasn't interested in those enough to track them up to release like this one. I wish I had though, because I've had a hard time bringing myself to pay $29.99 for the deluxe Boy.

Things I found interesting on TUF:

The box itself calls it the "Celtic Dub Mix," so we can all stop wondering if that's an official name or not. Strangely enough the A Sort of Homecoming remix is just labeled "Remix." The liner notes say "Daniel Lanois Remix" though, and call the Kevorkian Remix of Wire "Kevorkian 12" Vocal Remix." Based on the production credits I figure the Dub Mix was just Kevorkian's instrumental version. The long version of "4th of July" is called "Single Version" but 11 O'Clock Tick Tock gets no subtitle.

After listening, I love all the new tracks. Disappearing Act is probably my favorite of them, though I think you can tell that a lot of it was redone recently. It sounds in part like something from their current work. (This made me realize how much I wish their current stuff was less like HTDAAB and more like TUF, sonically speaking).

Another oddity: 4th of July has about seven seconds more fading at the end than the iTunes Plus version. But 4th of July (Single Version) has about nine seconds less fading out than the iTunes Plus version. Maybe that's why they changed it from "Long Version" to "Single Version" -- because the previously released "long version" is longer!

Then the iTunes Plus version is very likely the full-length version found previously on the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs 24K Gold CD of UF.  There are three versions of this track:

Studio Version Short (2:17)
The Unforgettable Fire Album - U2
 Studio Version Long (2:24)
Pride (In the Name of Love) Single - U2
 Studio Version Longer (2:39)
The Unforgettable Fire Album Gold Pressing - U2
     Singles Pac 3 - U2
     Sampler Cassette 1985 Promo - U2

I think I'm the last person to discover these two versions of Pride (In The Name Of Love) are different:

- the one on the The Unforgettable Fire album (3:48)
- the Single Version that is now available on as a bonus track on the Remastered Version on The Unforgettable Fire (4:40)

From about 3:20 to 3:33 of the Single Version, I noticed something new.  Is that little section the only difference between the 2 versions?  Bono seems to be saying a few new lyrics.  If I'm hearing this correctly, then I would think this would require the Lyrics Section of this website to list a Single Version of Pride (In The Name Of Love) ....... kind of like the song Please is listed separately as both a Studio Version and a Single Version.  Here are my specific questions:

1 - Is that little section the only difference between the 2 versions?
2 - If not, what are the other differences?
3 - Is the new Bono part something that requires a set of lyrics for the Single Version of Pride (In The Name Of Love)?

Forgive me if this has already been discussed thoroughly .....

I had preordered and already received my discs, but I was at the mall (Seattle area) yesterday evening and thought I would check out what they had in stock.

Best Buy - CD: 1 copy, Deluxe: 0 copies, Boxset: 1 copy.
Target - Zero. Zip. Nada. Nothing.
Borders - CD: 1 copy, Deluxe: 0 copies, Boxset: 0 copies.
FYE - CD: 1 copy, Deluxe: 1 copy, Boxset: 0 copies.

So, four stores, only five copies total and only one each of the deluxe and the boxset. Don't know if they had sold out or just hadn't bothered to stock them in the first place. I recall that when the last round of remasters was released, these stores had multiple copies of the deluxe versions.

They all had plenty of stock of "This is It."  :P

I'm not sure whether the extra "lyrics" in the single version are worthy of inclusion on the web site.  To me, it just sounds like Bono improvising a bit, but not really singing any substantive words.

But yes, that extra section is the only difference between the single version and the album version (although maybe the single version takes a bit longer to fade out, too?).  In the liner notes, Edge says that the guitar solo is "longer" in the single version, but actually there are two separate guitar solos.  The second solo is the extra part, with the new "lyrics" by Bono.  :)  It's kind of jarring to hear the single version after being so familiar with the album version for so many years (especially since the album version, and not the single version, is the one you always hear on the radio...)

Speaking of extra parts, I noticed that the mix of the "Unforgettable Fire" music video on the DVD is slightly different than the album version.  During the intro, you can hear Bono humming and mumbling something while the keyboards are playing.

Morgan1098, thanks so much for the quick and detailed response.  I agree with everything you said.  Concerning what Morgan1098 said about which version gets played on the radio ...... in September 1984, did Island Records distribute the Single Version to radio stations so they can play it?  And if so, did radio stations actually play the Single Version, but then eventually end up playing the Album Version (as they do now)?

I was just reading the Wikipedia page for the album The Unforgettable Fire.  In the “Album and single releases” section, it states Pride (In The Name Of Love) was released in November 1984.  I then read the Wikipedia page for Pride (In The Name Of Love) and it states that the single was released in September 1984.  To confirm the correct date, I checked my book “Into The Heart: The Stories Behind Every U2 Song” (1998; author Niall Stokes), which states the Pride (In The Name Of Love) single was released in September 1984.  I have no idea how to edit Wikipedia, so I will leave that to someone who does.

Does anybody know the answer to my question about which version of Pride (In The Name Of Love) was played on the radio back in September 1984?

I'm pretty sure the US 7" radio promo had the single version on one side and the album version on the other, so I guess it would be up to the radio programmer to decide whether to play the longer or shorter version. I can remember hearing Pride on the radio in 1984, but I sure can't recall which version.

I would guess that most radio plays these days are either off of the Best Of CD or U218 Singles, both of which are obviously the album version.

Thanks for the quick reply, Brad.

After doing a little research, I discovered that U2 performed these songs at the Conspiracy Of Hope concert (New Jersey; June 15, 1986):

MLK
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Bad
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Maggie’s Farm
Help
Sun City (U2 joined by other musicians)

The DVD in the Limited Edition Box Set Of The Unforgettable Fire only includes:
MLK
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Bad

Does anybody know why the other 4 songs weren’t included on the DVD?
Does anybody have any good guesses?

Maggie's Farm, Help & Sun City were probably left out because of copyright and licensing issues, as U2 very rarely release covers these days.

No idea about Sunday Bloody Sunday, though. Maybe they just forgot it?  ???

[BTW: Leads me to think about the inevitable Rattle and Hum remaster. Will we see it released without Helter Skelter, All Along the Watchtower, Freedom for My People and The Star Spangled Banner? Or even without Love Rescue Me and When Love Comes to Town, if Dylan and B.B. want their shares?]  ;D

I heard "Pride" numerous times during its original release and it was always the album version (which, keep in mind, is the same version used in all three 1984 videos for the track); I never heard the so-called single version until I bought the German CD single years later.

Yeah, even if they had both versions available, I think most radio DJs would favor the album version because it's shorter.

Also, I just listened to the single version again, and the 2nd guitar solo isn't the only "addition."  Bono also sings "In the name of love, what more in the name of love" an additional 4 times leading up to the 2nd guitar solo.  His voice actually sounds a bit rougher at times than what we're used to on the album version.

The extra section in the single version actually also includes an additional chorus (starting at 2:43). If you compare the tracks, the chorus before that little "nobody like you" ad-lib section isn't in the album version. Instead, the album version goes straight from "they could not take your pride" to the chorus after the ad-lib dealie. I like the extra chorus, Bono's voice is rawer and more expressive.

Does anyone else detect a little of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For at the very beginning of Disappearing Act? I was humming it after my first listen and my brain kept leading my mouth into doing Still Haven't Found without me even realising it. Is it mentioned anywhere if this song or part of it was used for Still Haven't Found? Does anyone else think there's a similarity there?

Yes, my immediate reaction also was ...... the start of Disappearing Act sounds like the guitar part in I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.

That's hardly a logical conclusion.

I listened to the Pride single off of UF RM and it seems a few beats slower. Maybe it has just gotten faster thru live performance...

That's exactly it; they play it in a higher (and less effective, IMO) key live.

Well, it took me longer than I'd hoped because I was working my way through The Beatles new mono and stereo sets but I was finally able to compare and contrast the new remaster of TUF with the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs 24K Gold Master Recording CD and...

in my opinion...

the winner is...

the MFSL disc.  Why, you ask?  Much like THE JOSHUA TREE beforehand, general fidelity seemed equal between the two (in other words, neither was noticeably louder or clearer than the other); however, I noticed two distinct differences between the two, one slight, one more notable.  In the slight difference category, the new remaster actually gave a tad more clarity to the higher frequencies; it didn't make for any dramatic change, though.  Most evident for me was hearing the acoustic guitars chiming in at the close of the title track with more clarity and transparency than I'd heard before.  In the more notable corner, identical to the experience I had with THE JOSHUA TREE remaster vs. MFSL comparison, the bass on the MFSL is much richer, punchier and weightier.  Now, people seem to be of two minds about that.  For some, this level of bass seems "overcooked", murky and too "thick"; for others, like me, it adds needed bouancy, power and just sheer rock-and-rollness to the album.  Also, as a slight side note, you can clearly hear the tape hiss from "Elvis Presley and America" sharply end as we move into "MLK" on the remaster, which I find off-putting; no such sharp audio drop-off is evident on the MFSL.  So, for my money, though the remaster is obviously a clear improvement upon the earlier mass releases of TUF, I'll be sticking with the MFSL for my future listening needs.  That said, the bonus CD with remixes and b-sides sounds fabulous, much better than any previous CD versions I've heard and, actually, to my ears, packs more sonic wallop than the remastered TUF album proper.

heh--you just had to mention the Beatles boxes... 8)

But thanks for posting the TUF comparison.  ;)

I haven't tried comparing the various versions yet but I was immediately impressed by the bonus CD.

A few days ago, I subscribed to U2.com so I could guarantee my acquisition of the U22 Live 2-CD Set offered to subscribers only.  It had been 2 years since I had a subscription.  As many of you know, with this U2.com subscription, they sent me a 25% off online coupon code to be used at the U2 Shop on U2.com.  I thought "Why not try to use it toward the Super Deluxe Edition Box Set [2-CD / 1 DVD] re-release of The Unforgettable Fire ?"

So I went to the U2 Shop (on U2.com) to see what price was available.  But the online shopping process didn't make sense to me.  It started out at U2.com, then went to fanfire.com, which is what I expected.  But I don't understand what happened next.  It linked to Amazon (UK).  At that point, I stopped the check-out process without getting a price because I just didn't feel comfortable.  I'm here in the United States.  I use Amazon (US).  Why would Amazon (UK) allow me to purchase through them?  It just didn't feel right.

So instead, I decided to hold off on using the 25% U2.com coupon and I went directly to Amazon (US).  I don't remember how much you guys paid for the 2-CD/1-DVD Edition when it was re-released in October 2009.  I have been checking the price on Amazon (US) numerous times over the last few weeks.  It's weird how this pricing stuff works.  A few weeks ago, it was about $45.  Then it jumped to $54 and it stayed $54 for a while.  Then, tonight, I saw it priced at $34.  So it dropped $20 in one day!  I figured I had better take advantage of this price decrease.  I just finished my purchase on Amazon (US).

Does anybody have feedback on what I was experiencing with the U2 Shop/fanfire/Amazon (UK) shopping process?  Here's why I'm interested in feedback.  If it's possible, I would like to use the 25% off online coupon code toward the purchase of the Super Deluxe Edition of Achtung Baby from the U2 Shop (on U2.com).  I emphasize . . . . if it's possible.  Things I will have to consider:
- the difference between the U2 Shop price and the Amazon (US) price and how much difference the 25% off coupon makes
- I will pay shipping at the U2 Shop, but I will get free shipping at Amazon (US) [because the order is at least $25]

For a while u2.com was doing music sales through Amazon - and that's why you ended up sent to Amazon UK.  They weren't actively filling orders for music through the site, they just sent people to Amazon for the box sets etc.  And no, your 25% would not have worked in that case as you were buying through Amazon.  (And even though you are in the US, you can purchase from Amazon Canada, or UK etc., I do it all the time...)

The deluxe edition of Achtung Baby is being sold through the page directly however, but people who have tried to buy it with their 25% off coupon have had difficulty applying it toward their purchase.  The 25% coupon isn't good for everything.  It wasn't good on the Achtung Baby Box, or the 360 from the Rosebowl release before it, or the Artificial Horizon LPs.  It works great on T-Shirts and the more common stuff, but they don't seem to allow it to be used for multimedia...

Yes, buy from amazon.uk as often as you can!  I have gotten all sorts of stuff from there for way cheaper than I could get it from amazon us, even including the international shipping.  A couple years ago I got the Joy Division "Heart and Soul" 4CD box set from amazon.uk for $18 shipped.  It's like $50+ bucks on amazon US.

A couple caveats, though:
*Just like iTunes, you can't buy mp3s from amazon's uk store if you live in the US
*Obviously, DVDs can be a problem because you'll probably get PAL discs rather than NTSC discs.

A couple cool things:
*The price you see on amazon.uk includes Value-Added Tax (VAT) that is only applicable to UK residents.  Add the item to your cart, and if you're outside the UK you'll see the price is actually quite a bit lower than what was listed.
*To find out what your "grand total" will be, just add the items to your cart, but obviously don't hit the "Pay" button yet.  Then go to www.xe.com/ucc (http://www.xe.com/ucc), and you can do a currency conversion to see what you'll pay in US dollars.  In almost every case, the same item on amazon.uk will be significantly cheaper than buying it as an "import" through amazon.com.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.  I really appreciate it.  That info about the DVDs . . . . PAL versus NTSC . . . . . is very important.  Thanks for giving me the detailed step-by-step procedures for the shopping cart/grand total stuff.  It will come in handy if I ever decide to buy music CDs from Amazon (UK).

I received my 2-CD/1-DVD Edition of The Unforgettable Fire.  I'm putting the CDs and the DVD with my U2 section on the shelf that stores all my CDs.  I'm not interested in keeping the box and the 5 photographic prints.  If anybody wants them, send my forum profile a message with your mailing address.  I will mail them to you for free.  This offer will be good until December 31, 2011.  At that point, I will try to give them away at some other U2 fan website.  I'm posting this because I know that other people's boxes may have been damaged during shipment and this is a way to help them out.  I'm also willing to send just the 5 photographic prints if that's all you want.
