Hahaha! I once called an atrociously scratched CD a "magnetized coaster" when the Best Buy customer service rep wouldn't let me return it. He didn't really appreciate it.

Just an update:  There was a promo single served to radio on Friday afternoon for I'll Go Crazy.  The single released to radio was in mp3 format, and included the cover art seen in this thread.  Two tracks were sent out:

Dirty South Club Mix 7:10
Dirty South Radio Mix 4:26

No physical CD that I'm aware of yet in the USA, but I expect we'll see one in the next couple of days...

Post by: Brad on June 15, 2009, 03:35:20 PM
So does that mean this remix is going to be considered the single?  It's OK as far as dance remixes go, but it's a little too repetitive and cuts out too much of the original lyric for my taste. I can't see this playing on the usual U2 radio formats: AC, AAA, etc...
Title: Re: I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Post by: morgan1098 on June 15, 2009, 04:54:18 PM
I seriously doubt that dance mix will be the single version.  I wouldn't be surprised if they try to repeat the formula for Magnificent... releasing an album edit followed by a billion dance mixes.  That's what gave Magnificent its only real chart action here in the US.

This site where the single is streaming says "more remixes to come" for U2:
http://www.giantstep.net/releases/2367 (http://www.giantstep.net/releases/2367)

The lesson here is that if you see mega "rare" Crazy Tonight promos start showing up on ebay, don't buy them.  At this point I truly wouldn't be surprised if they released a commercial Crazy Tonight single similar to the Magnificent Remixes.

For all who doubt about my debut post... YOU SUCK...

For the others, thanks...

Now for those who think a remix verison can't be a single... remember -> MOFO
Title: Re: I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Post by: Brad on June 16, 2009, 11:23:36 AM
It still seems like an odd play for a track where the album version already seems tailor made to be a single, but it's growing on me. It's interesting that the Radio Mix contains an additional verse compared to the longer mix.

I do agree with you about MOFO; I have the Popmart Mix Radio Edit in my "U2 Singles" playlist. THAT was a hard promo to track down.

Now, this forum is a nice quiet little corner of U2 fandom, so I think that we can disagree without resorting to name calling. I don't think anyone was doubting the existence of this promo release; just opining over whether this should be the commercial single.

Don't forget the 7 inch vinyl!!! Why else did we get that box??  :D

I'm hoping for at least a basic edit and something besides a remix as a B-side.

Agreed. I'm crazy (<-- pun not intended, but intentionally left in) for electronica, but they need to ease up. Releasing Winter as a B-side for something would make sense. I  suppose they're hesitant to give out much material that could appear on Songs of Ascent. ...which we're still waiting for more info about. ...which they'll magically release while touring, or a month or two later?

Rumour has it that they'll announce the 2010 tour this fall.  I'll bet if they can arrange it Songs of Ascent will be released to get the buzz level high for the tour announcement if at all possible.

OK so the CD single is due on August 14, and they will be producing a radio edit of the song for the official single, as well as putting the two dirty south remixes on the commercial single from what I've been told.  There should be an announcement of the contents tomorrow... :-)
Title: Re: I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight

I think ZOOO is right in saying that they'll hold back possible b-sides for the new album.
So next to all these remixes I hope there will also be another version containing a few live songs from the coming concerts.

From atu2.com:

U2tour.de has posted details of the upcoming "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" (grrr, shorter titles, please, Bono?) single. The tracklist is as follows:

1. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (Radio Edit) 3:48
2. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (Single Version) 4:13
3. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (Dirty South Club Mix) 7:10
4. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (Dirty South Radio Mix) 4:27

U2.com says the single will be released on August 17th and a video will be directed by David O'Reilly.

Matches what my sources told me.

I also wish this title was shorter. Wouldn't "I'll Go Crazy" or "Crazy Tonight" have been sufficient? It ties "Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" for most words, but comes in second for number of characters (including spaces and punctuation) to "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" -- by a single letter. Better luck next time.

So the single version is probably the album version?

Assuming that listing has the right track lengths, probably. But we've just learned a valuable lesson to take reports with a grain of salt until the actual release.

But the poetry of the title is ruined that way; see, he'll go crazy if he can't go crazy--it's irony, man, ya dig?

Four versions of the same song?!? If that's true, that's just plain depressing. No wonder their singles are selling badly. And if they keep going this way, pretty soon only people buying their singles will be us, i.e. the hard-core collectors who will buy them for obligation..

Sure about that?  This same approach was the only thing that gave "Magnificent" any chart traction at all.  As has been said before, I believe they're holding onto their unique tracks until they've committed to the track listing for the forthcoming SONGS OF ASCENT...

You're right, they should at least try to find some live recordings worth publishing. What shows have they done lately besides the Somerville one? They did Boots at the Grammies and one or two other shows. They also did Pride and Blinding Lights at the inaugural party for Obama. I managed to miss all five nights that they were on Letterman, does anyone have a list of what they played?

What singles?!  They stopped releasing them for the most part.

Australia?  Nothing.
Canada?  Nothing.
Japan?  Nothing.
UK?  A 7" single which only the most hardcore fan would buy anyway.

That leaves Europe and this one single for the US since 1997...

I think there's some confusion by the (eBay) sellers over this. Two of them list a Radio Edit & Single Version track listing, but one of those two still has the Dirty South Mix cover. I'd hold out for a little more evidence before believing there's really a Radio Edit & Single Version release. Then again, if anyone's seeing these outside of eBay then I'll shut my mouth again.

Smart move 'cuz God knows the album isn't bringing in the cash...

Actually, on that subject, is this a good seller or not?  I know it's the worst selling album U2 has had in the U.S. for over 25 years, but I read an article this week that said, worldwide, NLOTH has sold over 5 million units so far and is, quote, "on it's way to being their best seller to date".  Is this one of those cases (like the Tom Hanks movie ANGELS & DEMONS) where the album is an underperformer in the U.S. but a powerhouse chart topper everywhere else, or is that article just blowing some kiss ass smoke?
Title: Re: I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight

I'd be curious about whether this album is considered a "success" in terms of sales, too.

On a related note, does anyone know if last year's reissues (Boy, October, War, UABRS) were considered successful?  The next round of reissues (UF, Achtung, R&H) was originally scheduled for June 09, and that obviously didn't happen.  I don't know if it's because they were trying not to compete with NLOTH or if they were rethinking the reissue campaign due to lower than expected sales.  While the deluxe version boxed set was a huge seller on amazon initially, I have seen the deluxe versions of War and UABRS on sale at Best Buy recently for 14.99, less than half price, which seems to suggest they weren't exactly flying off the shelves.

So does anyone know if the reissue campaign will even continue?
Title: Re: I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Post by: Brad on June 25, 2009, 12:27:02 PM
Album sales are down so significantly overall for the past few years that it's hard to determine whether an album is a "success" based on how many units have sold.

NLOTH is selling fairly well compared to other 2009 releases. AFAIK it's still the #1 selling 2009 release worldwide so far and easily in the top 5 in the US.

As far as the reissues, I think it would make more sense to release those closer to the holiday shopping season, but I haven't heard anything recently. I wonder what level of success they are expecting with the reissues, because that's really sort of a "fans only" release.

R.E.M. and Pearl Jam are still actively reissuing catalog titles, so there must still be some money to be made in it.

I think it's also a popular tactic when your new stuff isn't getting much attention. Sort of saying, "Remember us? We did these old albums you liked? We still do stuff!"

So, there's a seller from the UK on eBay offering 7" vinyl singles of Crazy Tonight en masse, but no details about whether it's the remixes, the radio edit/single version, or any details at all until the release date. Just getting the pre-release sales advantage, I guess.

Universal just released another pack of remixes to radio for Crazy tonight...

Radio Edit (3:48)
Single Version (4:13)
Dirty South Mix (7:10)
Dirty South Radio Mix (4:26)
Redanka Kick Darkness Vocal (7:29)
Un-Named (7:28)
Redanka Sparks of Light Dub (7:30)

Taking a listen now.  I'll let you know my thoughts in a wee bit...

Wow!  Is the "single version" significantly different from the album version (i.e. the difference between the album and single versions of "Please"?)?

I'm honestly wondering if another commercial CD single isn't in the works.  :)

The Un-Named mix in the download pack is obviously a Dub remix of the "Redanka Kick Darkness Vocal".  It is different than the Sparks of Light Dub.  The Single Version sounds identical to the Album version to me...I can't really pick up a difference on the early listen.  It might be the same thing.

<<<TOUR SPOILER NEXT>>> I will say - i loved the Dirty South mix done live in concert.  Five minutes of pure bliss for this u2 fan...

Interesting. Amazon UK is now listing 2 CDs and a 7" vinyl, but no tracklistings. They also have a September 7 release date.

I was just thinking that we should have heard more about an August 17 release by now.

Glad to see, after the US Magnificent remixes surprise, we've learned better than to hastily order the first release in sight.  :P

This looks much more legit and in keeping with the structure of prior single releases, doesn't have the word "promo" listed anywhere, matches the revised release date found at Amazon and, oh yeah, even with shipping to the U.S., only cost me $15, which is a damn sight better than the $100 I dropped on the CD-R promo of "Magnificent".  I figured it's worth the dice roll...

CD 2 is listed as a "cd single enhanced."  I wonder if that just means "maxi single" or if there is some sort of actual enhanced element on it.  Maybe the video?

I'm not sure if this airs anywhere outside the U.S., so apologies to any readers who have no idea what I'm talking about, but does anyone agree with me that the recent Blackberry Loves U2 commercial, huge chunks of the song missing aside, improves upon the album mix of IGCIIDGCT?  I found that, when listening to NLOTH, I was often lukewarm about this track and always eager for it to wrap up so I could get into the more committed ass-kicking tone of GOYB yet every time the Blackberry commercial aired, I became enraptured by the song.  After comparing the two versions more closely to find out why I was responding to the two edits so differently, I realized that the album version of "Crazy Tonight" never has a musical payoff to the buildup of the chorus.  It's like the entire song is, pardon my crass language, a big cock tease; Bono builds up time and again "but I'm gonna go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight!" only to have the surging music immediately peter out and quiet back down.  Thematically/narratively, it makes sense, I guess--we basically end the song with its main character still unable to release, still unable to "go crazy"--but as a purely emotional, musical journey, it's terribly frustrating; we never get a cathartic release, a sonic "orgasm".  Oh, Edge has his wonderful solo, to be sure, but it's not placed in the right, the best, emotional juncture of the track.  However, in the Blackberry commercial, after Bono fires out his chorus in a passionate blast, we immediately move into Edge's solo--ah, at last, the divine emotional payoff I've been waiting for!  For me, this really profoundly improves upon the power of the song and takes it from being just a middling track to a real standout.  I've never been so aware of the importance of musical editing like this before.  Though I'm not holding out hope, I'd love it if this edit is part of the so-called "Single Version" being released in early September.  So, am I alone in this or do you know what I'm talking about?

LOL Brilliant.

I love the image. It just feels a bit lazy to me that they would just get someone to take a snapshot of their show. But then again, it is an amazing spectacle and is a good idea to document it on one of their singles. And I guess a concert full of the wildest U2 fans can fit in with the idea of "going crazy". Just would have liked to see something else. But then I wouldn't know what to use either.

This listing from Play.com suggests that the digital release has also been pushed back.

What is with the staggered releases of these singles?  Is there any reason to release the digital single in mid-August when the CD single isn't coming out until late September?  Wouldn't a single have a better chance of making an impact, if not actually hitting the charts, if everything was released at the same time?  I'm not just talking about U2, either.  It just seems like the record companies don't care any more.  The way albums and singles are promoted seems totally random and haphazard.
Title: Re: I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Post by: Brad on August 25, 2009, 12:08:22 PM
I really wonder whether U2 even make any money from releasing singles anymore. They certainly don't seem to care too much about chart positions with the gradual roll-outs of the last three singles, not to mention the partially aborted release of Magnificent.

It just seems like the record companies don't care any more.

One of the casualties of the record industry dying is quality. Peter Hook from New Order re-iterated this when they did re-issues last year. The releases were full of mis-prints and typos etc and Hook couldn't find someone who gave a shiite.

Not only were the New Order booklets full of typos, the actual CDs had tracks that were transferred (badly) from vinyl source recordings.  They sounded terrible.  Due to fan backlash, Rhino in the US recently re-released the New Order sets with better sound quality.  (I'm not sure how this went down... whether the albums were re-mastered again, or just the vinyl-sourced songs were replaced, or what.  But I'm sure you can get the full scoop at any New Order fan site worth its salt..)  I don't know if the typos were corrected, either.

Sorry for the slightly off topic rant.

Actually, both posted pictures are correct; the concert stage is the front cover and the CG animated video shot (and, really, what is it with this insipid video?  Has NLOTH made for the worst run of videos in U2's already spotty history?) is the back cover.  A different shot from the CG animated video is used for the inside cover.

The Dutch iTunes store released the following I'll Go Crazy EP:
1. I'll Go Crazy... (Single Version)
2. I'll Go Crazy... (Live from Somerville Theatre Boston)
3. I'll Go Crazy... (Redanka's Sparks Of Light Dub)
4. I'll Go Crazy... (Dirty South Full Remix)
5. digital booklet.

Strange selection of songs, especially the Sparks Of Light Dub since this is NOT the remix used on the 360 tour.
Only downloaded the live track, I have the others on CD, so I can't comment on the digital booklet.

Weird, U2 must be testing if there's still a viable singles market in the U.S.; I wish this news would have come sooner, though, so I could answer them with a resounding "yes!"; instead, like any other U2 fan worth his salt, I already imported the UK releases...

Yeah, but I like the idea of getting a new U2 12" again, especially with this Claw/live-cover.

Sweet.  I can't believe the US is getting ANOTHER CD single.  It's like 1998 all over again!

Also, I know this was discussed earlier but I'm not sure the question was ever answered... does the "Single Version" of Crazy Tonight differ significantly from the album version?

Just got an email from Chris at Ideal Copy. His distributor is also showing a CD+DVD. He's supposed to let me know if there is any more info.

The instrumental mix is a tiny bit different in the single version and there's a bleep in the middle for a split second just before "baby, baby, baby"  Lyrics are the same.

So still the Dirty South Radio Mix is only commercially available on the UK 7".  That's annoying.

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Paying For
Collector's Remix

I have paid the highest prices
I have run through Ebay
Only to be a fool
My wife thinks me a tool

I have charged, I have crawled
I’ll need more money to see the claw
Only to be a fool
I want the 12 inch too

But I still haven’t found what I’m paying for
But I still haven’t found what I’m paying for

I have bounced many checks
For some lousy promo remix
Unforgettable Fire
I’ll never retire

I have spoke with the tongue of Visa
I have held the hand of Smith Barney
They made warnings in the night
I was broke as a stone

But I still haven’t found what I’m paying for
But I still haven’t found what I’m paying for

I believe in the money tree
Money for nothing, chicks for free
Mint U2-3
And yes I’m still charging

U2 broke my bank and goosed my pay
Carried my savings all away
They’re to blame
You know I believe it
(My wife hates me)

But I still haven’t found what I’m paying for
But I still haven’t found what I’m paying for

 ;D

For those of you who wanted "crazier" cover art, I offer this proposal for the US releases.

Concept by God, Part II (http://www.u2wanderer.org/rtss/index.php?topic=696.msg3156#msg3156) and Brad (http://www.u2wanderer.org/rtss/index.php?topic=696.msg3156#msg3158).

Put that on your 12" and scratch it.

Z000, it occurs to me that I should be a bit miffed with you for taking my idea (and Brad's follow-up) and running with it without offering due credit...but I'm not!  That's friggin' awesome!  8)

Has anyone found the CD single (or any format, really) in a brick-and-mortar store in the US?  My local indie store carried the Magnificent CD single, but I went searching for the Crazy Tonight single today and came up empty.  They don't even have it in their system.  Also, the Best Buy site says it's available in limited stores, but none near me.  I guess I'll have to go with amazon for this one...

I'm pretty sure The Ideal Copy ships internationally.

My local FYE stocked the Magnificent single, but they didn't get it in until a couple of weeks after the release date.

I assume they are going to get Crazy eventually, but I would be surprised if they had it in stock today.

Anybody having trouble downloading the videos from the single?  When I go to the instructed web site, it tells me that my CD is not valid.

Yes. I have.  :P ;D
I tried on 2 computers and 4 CD-ROMs  :-X But I couldn't download these two. Alway said that CD is not valid.I wrote to them and they tried to help but couldn't (instead of GOYB and NLOTH which worked fine).

After all they let me to download videos directly  ::) But I tried one more to resolve the problem and open Java Console. Java recognise CD_ROM in three ways. One of it is the existing Autorun.inf file on the disk. I have this files on all hard disks for projecting icons. And Java was looking for Single on the first CD-ROM - on my computer it was C:\ drive  :P :o I deleted all this files and validation was OK. :)

It could be much simple if the could add menu for choosing drive letter (like in other artist content).  :-\

@jw If you have more than 1 CD/DVD-ROM insert the Single in first drive in respect to drive letter (If you have E, F, G - insert in E). And you could write to them:

Found the US CD maxi at my indie record store today (they didn't have it earlier in the week).  I figured it would be in a jewel case but it's actually the same fold-out digipak as the international release... very cool.  I haven't tried to download the videos yet.

Thanks for the response. I tried both my CD drives on my home computer without success.  I took the CD to work and it worked from there.  So I got the videos.  I haven't tried the Java edit yet, but I probably won't bother now that I have the videos.

The sticker for the 6 track version with the 2 video downloads has the DVD logo on it.  Doesn't make sense since there's no DVD content.  Any idea why the DVD logo is on there?  Maybe they originally planned to make it a DVD single?

Man I miss the DVD single.

Weird.  There's no DVD logo on the sticker of the US 6-track (+ 2 downloads) that I bought.  The sticker has the following logos in this order:
1) Interscope, 2) Mercury Music Group, 3) Island Records, 4) Universal, 5) "Compact Disc Digital Audio," and 6) FBI Anti-Piracy Warning.  The actual CD has the same logos minus the FBI.

Yes, I noticed that also. In my opinion they shouldn't use DVD logo on non-DVD format disk.  :(  This CD Single is inconsistent with DVD format. Also this 2 videos are encoded with different codec than MPEG-2, so this logo is just misleading!!  >:(

When SACD disk cannot use CD logo, because of not effect CD-DA format rules, why thay could use DVD logo???

I think that someone who projected this cover just didn't care about media standards.  :-\
It would be better if the release really DVD Single - It could be one for all singles of NLOTH with all videos from this album.  ::)

Edit: So in US they repaired info on the sticker...  :P  Maybe FBI did something with this misleading logo! ;D
