Two tours but only a double CD, I have the impression this is going to be like Hasta La Vista x2, one show on CD, the other on the second, so they won't be complete shows. Would love a complete show but otherwise I'm excited for it.

There’s a number of songs that repeated between both tours. Beautiful Day, Pride, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Vertigo, City of Blinding Lights, One, Elevation.

They could steer clear of The Joshua Tree stuff if the 2017 DVD is coming around the same time. So they have some options for what to cut. I think it will be more like U22 or From the Ground Up where it will be a mix of stuff and may not necessarily follow the flow of a concert...

Strangely I listened to both Slane and Sydney Fan club gifts this week before this was announced for the first time in a long time.
360 (U22) had so many songs that they had to chop some off and making a setlist replica was difficult. Experience had a limited amount of songs so a standard edition would be easy to create.
Personally, I would like a 3 or 4 CD edition with a heavy emphasis on SOI and SOE songs. I hope they make this gift EPIC. It seems like a quick turnaround for a book though. I have printing times concerns. This is U2.com remember.

I'm only interested in the music.  I don't care about the book.  So if anyone wants my book, I'll mail it to you as long as you pay the shipping.

Hopefully like with U22 and From The Ground Up, additional tracks that didn't make the cut for either CD will be downloadable.

I like this gift idea, but have trouble seeing how it fits well on just two CDs, especially when the 360 tour got three CDs worth of material, plus downloads, and still had several missing tracks.  I know that there was a lot less variation with these two tours within each tour, but collectively, I'm guessing, the variation is about the same as 360?

Hmm.  But how many different songs were played in the combined IE & EI shows?  I could look it up, but it's dinner time...

Am I the only one overjoyed that we're getting CDs again??? If this is a "mixed concert" affair like U22, then it's a win in my book. U22 and From the Ground Up were the best fan club gifts in the history of the club, so if this follows the same format I'm happy.

I mean, we could have gotten something like, "Coming soon on limited edition colored vinyl, two songs from I+E on Side A and two songs from E+I on Side B." I'm super relieved and also surprised we're not getting something like that.

I'm overjoyed as well.  Vinyl looks great, but it's a pain to do anything with.  I am far more likely to pull out a CD to listen to casually, and it's far easier to scan for the discography LOL!!

We did that survey about the fan club gifts.  40% of fans that answered don't even have a record player.  Only 10% don't have a way to play CDs.  So from a possible use perspective the CDs probably make more sense among the fan base that answered.

I am interested in what they will do for a book.  If it will be more like the U22 book with a handful of images in a more magazine style appearance, or if they are actually planning on doing something more comprehensive like they did with the From the Ground Up book...

Unique audio, on CD.  That's what I want and that's what's coming, so I'm certainly happy!  I think that the club's best work by far was done on U22 and From The Ground Up, so if it's anything like that, I'll be very happy.

FTGU was really well done. Not only was it official but essentially closed the door on any 360 era books written by third parties. I actual expect this to be epic as well but am worried about time constraints on the CDs.

Just for fun, I decided to give it a try on the tracklisting. I tried to give a Innocence/Experience concert flow on the list.

They have revealed six tracks on the news article: The Miracle of Joey Ramone, Every Breaking Wave, Song for Someone, The Blackout, Get Out of Your Own Way and 13 (There is a Light). Since they have played I Will Follow, Beautiful Day, Pride and Vertigo in every concert of the two tours, I have also included those.

CD1: The Miracle of Joey Ramone | The Electric Co. | Vertigo | I Will Follow | Beautiful Day | The Ocean | Iris | Cedarwood Road | Song for Someone | Sunday Bloody Sunday | Raised by Wolves | Until the End of the World

CD2: The Blackout | Lights of Home | Elevation | Even Better... | Acrobat | You're the Best Thing | Every Breaking Wave | Pride | Get Out of Your Own Way | City of Blinding Lights | One | Love is Bigger... | 13 (There is a Light)

25 tracks, with 12 songs from SOI/SOE.

Hope they don't go for the easy route and pick audio from Paris'15 and Berlin'18 only.

That would certainly be a disappointment.  I'd like to see a mix of as many different shows as possible.

People seem to be in an uproar over "Little Things" being up for vote on U2.com, but I think it's great. Yes, it's not from the 2015 or 2018 tours, but it makes sense to tag it on there since the focus clearly seems to be on songs from SOI and SOE. Just call it a "bonus track from JT30" and call it good. What's the big deal?  :)

yes, Little Things is really good!  I'm surprised the Song For Someone got voted in over The Troubles.  The Troubles, if I remember correctly, was sitting second for a while and I just figured that it would be the second track.  I don't know why people would prefer to hear an already available song instead of one they've never heard.

There are those who would draw a line between the 'fan' vote and the 'fanatic' vote. They are both good songs and while I wouldn't have chosen Song for Someone, I think it's great that it has such popular support. Great album track, great live track and a proper video with Woody off Cheers. The Troubles on the other hand never really found its feet live, imho.

I would too. I suspect the bonus tracks are a long shot, especially Lucifer's Hands as it wasn't played much and The Crystal Ballroom that had a really extended Stones snippet that would need clearance...Invisible / Ordinary Love make sense to me, they really fit into the albums.  And we know The Little Things is on there :)

I wonder if the 2 CDs (U2 Live Songs of iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE) will arrive in 2019.  I currently have no subscription so I expect to start a new subscription in the next few months.  I haven't done it yet because I just don't like paying for something and then having the shipment pending for months or even a year.

Missing Ordinary Love is fine - I understand the reasoning if it's not a "song of experience".  Not having Lucifer's Hands, though, just seems like a missed opportunity to be complete.  Then again, this band is pretty notorious for leaving things just short of complete when it comes to releasing anything live.

I demand a bonus download-only track!

This is the first U2 live release I've heard where it really strikes me just how much of the music is "piped in" rather than played live... the strings on "Lights of Home," Kendrick Lamar's and Lykke Li's voices (you can also clearly hear Lady Gaga on "Summer of Love" although the sample isn't credited in the liner notes like the other two are), etc. I know a lot of this is triggered by Terry Lawless under the stage, and that this has been happening for years, it just really stands out on this release for some reason. Even so, it's cool hearing two full CDs worth of new music rather than all the old war horses like New Year's Day!

+1
When I read that they will include all SoI song that were played and The Crystal Ballroom within I thought at the same moment why the hell they omitted Lucifer's Hands!?!? Why? This song doesn't has luck to be on any official release - remember when "early version" Return of  Stingray Guitar was lost in voting for U22 and next on The Edge's Picks.   :-\
Other thing is that LH would fit very good as both CDs would have then for 12 tracks.

As for Ordinary Love - it could also be there, as Invisible can. I wouldn't mention it, but it also misses next opportunity to released in live version as they ommited it along with Sweetest Thing in bonus tracks on Paris e+I DVD/BD, still don't know why.

Yeah a little bit too much maybe. The Troubles is a killer for me - sounds great, especially long solo at the end, not faded like on album version.

I thought they will play The Troubles much more on e+I Tour, like a closer and maybe would had at least one opportunity to play it live with Lykke Li - that version would be probably even better.
Other option could be that part of Lykke Li could sing The Edge, but don't know how it would fit.

PS. I downloaded all tracks from U2.com and see all have fadein/fade out apart from GOOYOW->American Soul and LIAWHL->The Blackout. I thought it would be seamless as U22.  :-X

I'm not sure how I feel about the fades.  I don't find that it has really bothered me at all as I've listened to the album start-to-finish.  I thought it would grate on me, but no.

I must commend U2.com for, for the first time since whatever preceded U22, shipping me something that didn't get at least one of it's corners dented/folded/smashed during shipping!  Really, the whole thing was in prefect condition and I'm really happy about that.

The photos in the booklet are nice, but unfortunately I'll never look at them again.  It's such a nicely produced product, I just wish that they had included some sort of text with maybe anecdotal information, tour stats, quotes...anything really.  This is one of those rare times when I judged a book by its cover and was let down.

Overall, this product ranks third for what I know I'll enjoy from it, behind U22 (musically equal, behind on the booklet) and From The Ground Up (musically better, far behind on the book(let)).

I wonder if there'll be a follow-up gift in the same vein as FTGU followed U22, maybe next time being a collection of all the other tracks...

Any inside word on the 2020 gift yet, or when the announcement is coming? As usual I only have a few days left on my membership and I'm not sure if I want to take the plunge, especially with no live dates likely for a while.

I have zero inside knowledge, but there are supposed to be physical releases of both the JOSHUA TREE 2017 (and 2019?) tour and the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE 2018 tour upcoming and, in this day of dying physical media sales, I'm expecting one or both of these to be turned into fan club exclusives (and, if I'm right, I desperately hope they include Blu-ray as an option, and don't cheapen out with a DVD-only release, like Coldplay did last year with their Butterfly package release).

I have a feeling we might get something related to these tours as well. Actually, I'd like to see the JT Tour hit shops as a Blu-ray (and a streaming option of course) and have the Fan Club release the audio on CD.

Might want to check out this one...

The EI tour should be announced for home video release early this year. And there's talk of a 4K version. They recently have shown it on 4K stations in the USA (a 75 minute edit.)

Joshua Tree will be coming to theatres...told it's where they want to place it first.

Don't know what to expect for sure but I half expect this will be a non-music year.

Those are the fan club gifts I like the least, the audio versions of previously released videos.  I much prefer to just rip the DVD audio and get something new from the fan club.

Scratch that last comment of mine.  THESE are the gifts I like the least, the non-music ones.  I hope your Aaron-Tingle is wrong about this one.

We added a new page in the discography - just dedicated to the fan club stuff. We finally moved it away from the albums page.  There's enough there now that it deserves its own space.

And now we have the 2020 gift announced:

Some notes of note from the announcement:

Link to the announcement: https://www.u2.com/news/title/experience--innocence--live-in-berlin (https://www.u2.com/news/title/experience--innocence--live-in-berlin)

My hopes:
 - there's some reconsideration and blu-ray is made available (extremely unlikely if they're already in production)
 - HD download is made available (I don't see that happening)
 - audio is made available for download (this is highly doable and in the realm of possibilty)

My fear:
 - this gets commercially released on blu-ray and this gift becomes nothing but a lo-res backup along with some photos

I'm looking forward to this one!

Yeah, if this ends up getting released on Blu-ray or 4K commercially, this is a beyond-useless fan club gift. It's funny how the announcement even compares it to the i+e release from a few years ago, which was available everywhere and on Blu-ray and also had the full show plus a ton of extras. I hate to say it, but it really does sound like the only thing that will make this a "fan club exclusive" is maybe a booklet of photos?

The announcement makes the point that it's the entire show from beginning to end.

Maybe the public wide release of the e+i shows will be edited down and won't include the entire show. If that's the case, then this release wouldn't be completely pointless.

In a day where everything is broadcast in, at minimum, 720p, this trend back to DVD (Coldplay did it last year with their Butterfly Package) is nothing less than an embarrassment. I'll renew, because duh, it's still a U2 concert, but what a crushing disappointment tech-wise.

I feel the same way BUT I think DVD is the best way to spread the net wide. A 4K player will play a regular Blu Ray or a DVD, but it doesn't work in reverse. A DVD player won't play a Blu Ray or a 4K disc, so putting it on DVD works for everyone, except those who haven't upgraded from VHS. :)

ALSO... and this is a big question for a global fan club, but aren't DVDs still region-coded? If you live in Asia vs. Europe isn't there still a question of Region 1 vs. Region 2, etc? Blu-rays are generally region-free. Are they really going to manufacture DVDs for different regions? The Fan Club has enough trouble getting stuff sent on time; I can't imagine the potential screw-ups that could come with manufacturing DVDs for different regions.

My big question is whether this concert will get a full commercial release. If so, I think I'd rather wait to buy it on Blu ray and not have the "exclusive 24-page booklet."

The way around this is to offer the option of 1080 Blu Ray, DVD, or some lossy download.  4K is a nice idea, and even though it was filmed in 4K, I don't think not offering 4K is a big deal.  The choice of BR or DVD should be there.

ALSO... and this is a big question for a global fan club, but aren't DVDs still region-coded?
Many DVDs are region-free (region 0, I believe) just to avoid these problems.  I imagine that the product will be the same.

They will still have to make at least two versions. PAL for Europe and NTSC for the USA and most other parts of the world.

Right! There's certainly never been a gift like this before that would possibly require different versions for different countries.

As this article notes, the only way around the PAL/NTSC issue is if you have a very new (2019 or later) TV that no longer uses analog inputs. But if you have one of those, will you still be using a DVD player?
https://www.howtogeek.com/428987/whats-the-difference-between-ntsc-and-pal/

I don't mean to complain too much. I'm glad we're getting a full show and I'm glad I have the ability to play a DVD. I am curious about how the PAL/NTSC issue might play out though. It's uncharted territory for the Fan Club.

A couple of things to consider...

Commercial release these days does not necessarily mean Bluray / Disc.  They could be planning a commercial release that would be purely digital even for the 4K, or even through a commercial streaming service like Netflix. In which case a DVD from the fan club might be the only physical version. I'll take any physical version over none. I like the booklets, and the photos and the credits.

And I was told plans for commercial release would be announced in March (if it was going to happen.) That was before this fan club disc was announced. But the fan club announcement says they will be letting us know about dispatch in February. That suggests to me that these fan club gifts would be well ahead of any commercial release anyway.

https://twitter.com/markpeterboro/status/1222463197560672256

If you look at the poll above, done in response to the gift, 18% of respondents said they have a DVD player only, 49% said they have DVD and bluray, 15% said they can play DVD, bluray and 4K, and 18% said they can't play any sort of disc on their main television. That means that almost 18% are never going to get any use out of this gift.  There's sure to be lots of copies around on auction at that rate. But if you sent it out on a quality other than DVD you'd double that and be sending 35% of the fan club a disc they cannot use. That's getting a little high. It's a small poll, but I'm sure there is information out there available to the band about sales, and formats, even from their own past sales.  One of the biggest complaints they would get each time they have done a vinyl gift is that about half the fan club cannot even play them as they don't own a functioning record player (about 90% can play a cd.) So had they done a 4K disc that only about 15% could play, they'd have a deluge of complaints...

I likely won't watch this one over and over again. I watched Paris maybe twice. But I do listen to the music from it all the time. At least DVD will give me a disc that is easy to rip.  I'm not heartbroken over this one...

I have a new theory. IF it's true that the Fan Club will be announcing a release date in February and shipping maybe in March, that would be the fastest turnaround from gift announcement to shipping in Fan Club history. Like, by months and months.

My theory is that these DVDs have already been manufactured for a commercial release. At the last minute, they decided to hold them back and use them as fan club gifts instead. As others have said, the market for commercial DVDs and Blu-rays, especially for music, is shrinking. It would be very easy to print up some "outer sleeves" or slipcovers with unique Fan Club branding and the photo booklet. I wouldn't be surprised if these have "Fan Club" art on the outside but inside are shrink-wrapped DVDs that were originally intended for commercial release.

Aaron, I agree with you mostly on this, except that instead of going for a one-size-fits-most model and going DVD only, they should be offering a choice between getting either a DVD, a regular Blu-Ray, a 4K Blu-Ray, or a download code.  The production cost would increase slightly, but there would be no grumbling about format whatsoever.  Well, except for those who must have each version and then "have to" subscribe multiple times, but I'd wager that's the 1%.

I don't hold out hope that they'd be able to make that work. They struggle with the gifts in most cases. Getting out one version in a timely fashion seems to be a challenge, look at this years address mess up.  I'm not confident they'd manage something more complicated, although they did it with some success with the Slane T-shirts years back.

The fact that a beautiful 4K film is being shipped on DVD makes me (and others) think it's being released in other formats. That added to the rumour mill that said this was going to be released, with more news in March, makes me think it's a way to fill the gift quickly with something they have mastered, approved and ready, but may hope to maintain some income from whatever they might do with it in the future.

Still wondering how the PAL/NTSC formatting might figure into this. If the Fan Club has to be responsible for getting the right format to the right countries, I expect huge problems! While a Region 0 DVD will play on any player worldwide, the PAL/NTSC issue will still impact how it's displayed on a TV screen. I think?

The fact that a beautiful 4K film is being shipped on DVD makes me (and others) think it's being released in other formats.

And it's for this reason that I'm going to wait to renew until much later in the year, even though it means I'll pay $50 to subscribe vs. $40 to renew. If I were to pay $40 for a lame DVD only to turn around a few months later and discover a Blu-ray or 4K UHD disc release of it, I'd be even more livid with this offering than I already am.

Pursuant to my theory above, I think this gift effectively puts a nail in the coffin for this being a physical release down the line. As Aaron said, they could still offer/sell it as a 4K streaming product, but I don't think they will release this in a physical format outside the fan club now.

We MIGHT still get the JT Tour as a wide physical release, but I'm not even sure that's a given at this point. A brief theatrical run and then streaming might be all they're hoping for. The market is shrinking, and outside of this forum I don't think music blu rays have the same "collectible" appeal that vinyl and yes, CDs still have among music fans of a certain age.
