Title: Songs of Experience track list, formats, etc.
Post by: morgan1098 on November 01, 2017, 10:33:58 AM
The track list and formats for SOE have been announced. Vinyl, CD, digital, deluxe, etc.

1. Love Is All We Have Left
2. Lights of Home
3. You're The Best Thing About Me
4. Get Out Of Your Own Way
5. American Soul
6. Summer of Love
7. Red Flag Day
8. The Showman (Little More Better)
9. The Little Things That Give You Away
10. Landlady
11. The Blackout
12. Love is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way
13. 13 (There Is A Light)
Bonus Tracks:
14. Ordinary Love (Extraordinary Mix)
15. Book of Your Heart
16. Lights of Home (St Peter's String Version)
17. You're The Best Thing About Me (U2 Vs. Kygo) [deluxe CD only]

Initial thoughts:
*At 13 tracks this is the most songs on a U2 studio album, the high point was previously 12 with Pop and Achtung Baby (R&H had 17 but only 9 were new studio songs)
*Why in the world is there a remix of Ordinary Love on the deluxe version?
*"13 (There is a Light)" apparently is a reworking of "Song for Someone," so that's more recycled material. But I guess it's a way to tie the Innocence and Experience albums together.

Thanks for posting the details.
I haven't heard this Ordinary Love remix.  But whatever their reason is for putting it on the deluxe version . . . . . . I'm just glad it was released in a format I could legally purchase.  I hate trying to hunt down rare remixes or unreleased tracks.

Aaron already put this on the Discography page, but the Japan version of the deluxe CD will include "The Blackout (Jacknife Lee Remix)" as a bonus track.

For the u2songs.com discography listing of the standard jewel case 5-Inch CD of Songs Of Experience
The Track Listing shows 12 tracks, but then . . . . . in Other Notes, it says 13 tracks
 :o

So yes . . . . . . I guess I will be trying to hunt down a digital version of The Backout [Jacknife Lee Remix].  All because:
-  I don't have a record player.  What good does a vinyl record do me?   (i.e. Record Store Day release of the Single)
-  I am reluctant to purchase anything from the other side of the Earth   (will a purchase from Japan really go smoothly?)

It just couldn't be simple, could it?       >:(

It's not that difficult ordering from Japan. There are several websites that are easy to navigate for English speakers. You can use Google translate to make sense of website that aren't in English. There are services in Japan that will bundle packages from several stores in Japan, collect payment, and forward them to the US for a minimal fee. If all that fails the Japanese versions will show up on eBay here in the US but usually for a premium price. I'll be buying the Japanese release for this new album. The only question is do I get the Deluxe CD or go for the full package with vinyl as well.

I've bought the first press of every album from Japan. In addition I've also bought many bootlegs over there. Shipping usually takes about a week and I've never had a problem. From my experience their customer service has been great. I once had a guy run out to the post office to retrieve an already mailed package so he could drop another CD in it. All to save me from paying an extra postage charge.

13 tracks, track 13 called 13 - just another reference to their experience from 13 studio albums so far.

Re: the Japanese deluxe CD, I have never gone wrong with CD Japan. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/

I have ordered some U2 discs from there as well as tons of vintage reggae CDs (yes, being a fan of roots reggae is part of my mid-life crisis. Ha!). The listings are in English, or at least sufficiently enough that you can be sure of what you're ordering. Just be sure to choose the right shipping option. If you're willing to wait a bit longer to receive your order, you can get shipping for relatively cheap. They also offer super expensive shipping that will get it to you sooner.

Here's the listing for the deluxe CD with the bonus track. I now see they're also offering this with a "bonus postcard calendar!" whatever that means. Gotta love the Japanese and their commitment to physical product and extra trinkets.

Thanks to both of you for the detailed feedback.  I sincerely appreciate it.  I may use that Japanese website, but I have not yet made up my mind.

In the u2songs.com discography . . . . . for the Digipack listing for 5-Inch CD, Worldwide:
Are we expecting it to be two CDs . . . . . like the 2-CD Deluxe Version of Songs Of Innocence?

I am pretty sure that SOE is a one disc deluxe edition. We don't know there could be more deluxe versions released six months after December 1. Songs of More Experience.

I am pretty sure that SOE is a one disc deluxe edition. We don't know there could be more deluxe versions released six months after December 1. Songs of More Experience.

There isn't a 2CD format this time. The standard CD (13 tracks) is in a jewel case and the deluxe CD (17 tracks or 18 in Japan) is in a cardboard sleeve. From the photos, the deluxe sleeve design does look similar to the SOI deluxe, including the two booklets, but there is only one CD.

BTW, I was wondering if all 18 songs would even fit on the Japan CD, but they will. Here are the times:
Standard album: 51:05
Deluxe album: 67:38
Japan deluxe: 74:56

And I mentioned earlier that at 13 tracks, SOE will have the most songs on any U2 studio album. The previous record was 12 songs for both Achtung Baby and Pop. Pop is still the "longest" U2 studio album in terms of time, at 60:05.

Same with CD Japan! See my post above. Maybe all copies pressed in Japan will be bundled with a calendar.

I'm going with CD Japan myself - they seemed to be quite cheaper than Amazon.

I think I will wait until December 3rd or 4th and then go to cdjapan.co.jp, create an account and buy these 2 items:
          Songs Of Innocence   5-Inch CD x 2   Japan   UICI-1134/5
Songs Of Experience   5-Inch CD   Japan   UICI-9068

For shipping (to the United States), I want to choose this option because it is the least expensive:
          S AL Small Packet
          (Economy)
          2 - 6 weeks  /  Without Tracking  /  Not Insured

I don’t mind waiting 2 to 6 weeks.  Because you guys have experience with buying from Japan, you might be able to give me some accurate feedback on:
1.  If I wait until December 3rd or 4th to make this purchase, is a delay more likely due to "Not In Stock" ?
In other words . . . . . . if I wait until after the official release date (December 1st) to make the purchase and hundreds of people
have already bought Songs Of Experience by then . . . . . . is that Japan website likely to have run out of stock, label
my order as "Back order" and thus, delay it past the 6 weeks?
2.  Has any one of you guys had a problem with choosing the least expensive shipping option?
3.  When using the least expensive shipping option, what shipping carrier is used once the package gets to the United States?

Well, I went ahead and bought the 2 albums last night from www.cdjapan.co.jp    For shipping, I chose Registered SAL Small Packet (Economy).  I hope they mail both albums together in the same package.  I guess the package will arrive some time in January.  I already had Songs Of Innocence, but I decided I would rather have the Japan release instead.  Basically, I just want both mixes of The Crystal Ballroom on CD.  I'll just give my original Songs Of Innocence album to a friend . . . . . I don't think he ever bought it.

How much was it from Amazon Japan? When did you order? And how long did it take to get to you?

Amazon US has the Japan Edition for $30.88 and free Prime Shipping (when it comes back in stock).

Almost to a penny the same cost. It shipped on Thursday and arrived today (Japan to Oklahoma, USA). Not sure if Amazon U.S. also offers the free calendar postcard, though, if that’s important.

On u2songs.com . . . . . . in Latest News, there is a write-up titled 2017-12-05: A Sound of Drum and Bass: The U2Songs Staff Reviews Songs Of Experience.  The last line of Brad's review says:
I will make a plug for referring to the bonus track as "Lights of Home (Burn The Witch Version)"

What does Burn The Witch Version refer to?  Is Brad referring to Lights Of Home [St Peter's String Version] ?  Is there a joke that I'm not getting?  If so, can someone explain it?

I have another question about the write-up titled 2017-12-05: A Sound of Drum and Bass: The U2Songs Staff Reviews Songs Of Experience.  In Don's review, the last sentence of his first paragraph says:
". . . . . and it dilutes the continuation of the personal themes of SOI (what happened to “The Morning After Innocence” for example?)"

What is "The Morning After Innocence" ?

Hey, thanks for reading those reviews!

"The Morning After Innocence" was quoted extensively by Bono in interviews a couple years ago as the song on SOE that picks up where "Songs of Innocence" leaves off. You can read about it and most of the lyrics about halfway through this interview: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/inside-u2s-innocence-spectacle-a-backstage-q-a-with-bono-and-edge-20150521

I understand that plans change, especially in U2's world, but my point in the review is that I think U2 needlessly abandoned some of the original ideas for "Songs of Experience" in order to make room for some Trump commentary. I think that weakens/changes the thematic intent of the new album.

I happened to see the covers of SOI of SOE side by side today and was struck by the literal contrast between the two covers.  On SOI, the subject (Larry and son) are light against a dark background.  On SOE, the subject (kids) are in dark clothing against a light background.  So the black and white aspects of the two covers are inversions of each other.  I wonder if that was done intentionally.

I was mildly irked that the cover of my Japanese edition of SOI has a high gloss finish, whereas my Japanese version of SOE is matte, but I suppose that helps supports (intended by the band or not) your theory.

Could not disagree with this more. I think it's a huge wasted opportunity, with no new images or artwork. It's the same 2 or 3 images you've seen, over and over. And the newspaper is underwhelming and laid out like a first-year design school project. We've come a long way from the great U2 design of the past.

I also agree the artwork is underwhelming.  What is there is very nice.  But there's so little of it.  U2's album artwork has been pretty minimalist since 2000.  I miss the abundance of images from the albums of the 90s.  I spent a lot of time examining the pages of AB, Zooropa and Pop.   The artwork for the remastered 80s albums were also very nice.  Ha - if they ever issued  anniversary editions of the albums after 2000, I wonder what they'd look like.

Songs of Innocence design elements:
Images - Cover photo, Band shot (leather jackets), three grainy images
Illustrations/graphics - Bootleg cover (the iTunes pre-release), Larry's tattoo.
Type - One typeface, one weight, one color, one size, on a solid background

Songs of Experience design elements:
Images - Cover photo, Band in warehouse (+ same image without band), Sian in helmet photo
Illustrations/graphics - Cover silhouette, blue radial gradient, Blackout wordmark.
Type: One font, one weight, one size, on a solid background
(Type in the newspaper is a mish mash of a ton of things that have no meaningful harmony, including setting the bulk of it in Times New Roman, possibly the most bland typeface in the western hemisphere)

Compare that to the wealth of images, colors, typefaces, icons, single covers, cover variants, on every album prior to these two. And I don't think anyone should mistake it for minimalism, because there's hardly anything intentional about any of it.

The REALLY confusing thing is how different the I+E tour materials are! The tour program is FULL of photos, cool type layouts, ink splashes, supporting typefaces, embossing, diecuts, etc. It's like the band has intentionally asked the designers to save all their creativity for the tour book, and to make the actual album artwork as non-descript as possible. It's baffling.

As several forum members know, the Japan release of Songs Of Experience included a small little cardboard 2018 calendar.  For each month, the S for Sunday is colored red and the numbers below it for those Sundays are colored red.  And then . . . . . there are additional random days that are colored red.  Some appear to represent holidays such as Jan 1 (New Years Day).  But December 24 (Christmas Eve) is red rather than December 25 (Christmas Day).  Does anyone know what is the significance of the days colored red?
So . . . . in addition to every Sunday, these are colored red:
January  1   8
February  12
March  21
April  30

As several forum members know, the Japan release of Songs Of Experience included a small little cardboard 2018 calendar.  For each month, the S for Sunday is colored red and the numbers below it for those Sundays are colored red.  And then . . . . . there are additional random days that are colored red.  Some appear to represent holidays such as Jan 1 (New Years Day).  But December 24 (Christmas Eve) is red rather than December 25 (Christmas Day).  Does anyone know what is the significance of the days colored red?
So . . . . in addition to every Sunday, these are colored red:
January  1   8
February  12
March  21
April  30
May  3   4   5
July  16
August  11
September  17   24
October  8
November  3   23
December  24

Nothing more exciting than just indicators of Japanese holidays: https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/japan/

I'm still waiting on my preorder from CD Japan to arrive.  My hope is that by posting this, it will make it appear today.

:::. I noticed that U2.com store had the 2LP for $39.00 USD, but at the U2 Store from Universal (Digital Store UK based) they had it for $29.00 USD so I went for it, but after 58 days, it just e.mailed them, to ask for a refund (minus s&h they said).
No Tracking number for International Shipping, they say too.

I prefer acoustic versions of Get Out Of Your Own Way versus the album version.  Where did the audio in this YouTube video come from?  I can hear an audience at certain times during the recording.

Thank you very much.  I just figured it might be some fake recording because the person (who posted it) didn't mention any info about where it came from.

It didn't work.  It finally arrived yesterday, 68 (9 weeks, 5 days) days after shipping, slightly over the estimated 2-6 weeks delivery time.

I finally got to listen to those bonus tracks (I stubbornly chose to wait for the disc to arrive).  While I'm most pleased to have them, they're admittedly a bit of a letdown after such a long wait.  I think the bonus tracks on SOI were definitely a better lot than this selection.

I'll be curious to see how/if your opinion changes regarding "Book of Your Heart" over time. I love it more and more ardently every time I hear it, and I would replace probably half of what's on the album proper with it, if I had my say. Also, for whatever it's worth, I do think the Extraordinary Mix of "Ordinary Love" is the very best mix of the track.

Dagobah I went with the same shipping option as well from CD Japan. I got an email earlier this week saying it had shipped. I'll be sure to post here when it arrives. Hope yours get here soon!
I guess you have not yet received it.  I placed my Japan order on November 30, the email says the order shipped on December 4 and I'm still waiting.
Oh wow! Sorry I forgot to report here. Yes, I received my CDJapan copy on December 15 (I preordered it very early, though). I would give it a few more days and then maybe contact CDJapan again. The wait can apparently be up to six weeks!

My order was shipped November 30th to Canada. It arrived this Monday (February 5th), so it took just over 2 months to arrive. The packaging was excellent, box + paper + bubble wrap.

Cheers,

I also chose to wait for the disc to arrive from Japan so I understand how you felt during that time.

I feel the same way about Book Of Your Heart.  I love it so much.  I wish it was longer.  Because of the fact that it's a bonus track, I suspect we won't ever hear any remixes of it.

I think 2+ months is ridiculous.  But I'm happy to hear you guys are finally receiving the package.

Dang! Did you contact them at any point and get the item reshipped, or was this just how long it took for the original order? I agree about the packaging though. The Japanese still very much care about the physical aspect of music. Bless them.

No, I did not contact them.
The email confirmation contained the following: "On average, it takes 2-6 weeks for delivery for this shipping method. *May take up to 12 weeks"

Thank you very much.  I bought it from the iTunes Store.  I would have only known about this new release . . . . . because of your post.   ;D

I just checked my iTunes library . . . . . I already have this live acoustic performance of Get Out Of Your Own Way.  I had previously acquired it from YouTube.  But this official release has a much higher quality sound.  I'm so happy it was released on the iTunes Store!  I'm deleting my previous version (that I acquired from YouTube).
