Is there anywhere that I can find what the quality of the audio is on each of the band's DVDs?

I was just extracting some audio from the SYCMIOYO and COBL video singles and noticed that for both discs it said the audio stream was LPCM 16-bit 48kHz.  I had always assumed (yes, it's wrong to assume) that these DVDs had lossy audio.

I'll be doing the rest of the DVDs.  Am I correct to understand that the DVDs have the best quality audio available (given that they are 48kHz vs the CD quality of 44.1kHz)?

Anyhow, I'm posting this under "Discography & Releases" because I think that for DVD and Blu-Ray releases, as the quality of the audio can vary, the quality of the stream should probably be noted.

I'd be interested in seeing a list when you get them all done :)  I ripped everything but it was all done without separation of the audio.  And yes, I'll add it to the discography...

I checked some time ago Linear DVD - and the only song that was real 48 kHz was Stan Up Commedy  :-\ Only one! I don't remember exactly, but the rest were 44.1 kHz with some fade at high frequences.

The worst was Winter - the source must be a lossy audio from demo sessons. All NLOTH album has very poor quality - most notable are NLOTH (Album Versions), IGCIIDGCT (Album Version) [who the hell mixed this bass track!!?!?!?!?  :o ) and bonus song Winter...


U2 usually use LPCM audio track for most of thier DVDs. Live DVD's generally have real 48 kHz track: Boston, Slane, Chicago, Milan & Pasadena. PopMart from Mexico presumably also is in real 48 kHz. I'm not sure about ZooTV Sydney, TJT PArsi DVD and UABRS DVD...

The documentaries on the Popmart DVD were "Lemon for Sale", "The Road to Sarajevo", "A Tour of the Tour", "Last Night on Earth - an Inside View" and there was also a "Popmart Tour Visuals Montage".  No "A Year in Pop" to be seen.  That was the ABC special no?

In the following post I have documented the audio quality of all the DVD's that I could think of, minus From The Sky Down (the separate, full-length release).

It is important to note that I have only documented the quality of the audio's encoding.  There is as of yet no spectral analysis to see if what has been encoded at 48 kHz actually comes from a source of at least that sample rate, and so too for the bit depth/rate and number of channels used.  That is for later.

I can support what MartinTexas says about the Linear DVD.  Winter is of surprisingly poor quality, and Stand Up Comedy is true 48 kHz.

Here's the only real proper analysis that I've done so far.  It's on Vertigo.  I've attached the spectral frequency display and waveform images.

The CD album version is, obviously, encoded at 44.1 kHz and the source is at least that.  The waveform shows a lot of dynamic range compression and hard clipping at 0dB.

The DVD single audio version is encoded at 48 kHz and its source appears to at least be equal to that.  The waveform shows a lot of dynamic range compression and soft clipping at -1dB.

The 18 Videos version  is the most interesting, and possibly the best to listen to.  It is encoded at 48 kHz, and its source appears to be about that, but maybe 44.1 kHz.  The waveform shows very little, if any, dynamic range compression and there's no real evidence of any clipping.

George - this is great stuff.  I'd like to work it into the discography entries for the various DVDs.  Once Carl gets access set up for you to get in there, you can add some of it in yourself.  :)

Yeah it is great stuff but I don't really know what it means either.

A Year in Pop was on ABC yes before Las Vegas with Hopper and Ginsberg.

The sonic difference between 16/44 and 16/48 is essentially negligible, but thanks for compiling the info, George.

I've ripped the Vertigo DVD single just because I like that "power cut" effect in the break.

Vertigo? The video version is a slightly different mix. When Bono says, "and no one gets hurt," there is an effect like someone cut the power to the tape recorder, then a brief pause before they launch back into the song. I believe that's the only difference.

The first part comes from the album (mix is slighty different) then the song cut at "no one gets hurt" with the fade out, then it´s the 7" jacknife lee mix for the end.

Also first Video Version of Vertigo (from HQ) has different mix - especially the end part is different.

What about Vertigo DVD single - it has very poor quality of audio. All songs clipping - even AYGWF. Very bad mastering.  :-\  It's hard to hearing at hihg volume....



PS There's no much of BluRay disc from U2 (R&H, 360 & FSD?), but would be nice to complete tis list also by this version.  ;)

The picture on the back of the Vertigo DVD single is pretty much the best picture/image of U2 ever IMHO.
