Title: Amnesty International Box Set
Post by: PatrickM on March 22, 2013, 09:43:13 AM
Hello --

I've just received an email from CD Japan that reveals an Amnesty International Box Set that features U2. Its name is Amnesty International Presents Get Up! Stand Up! - Highlights from The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998. It is a 2CD/3DVD set.

Here's the listing with an ok price:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VQBD-10135

I also found more info on this website:

http://www.humanrightsconcerts.com/

However, the tracklist is nowhere to be found. Does anyone have more info on this release?

That second link lists a US / Canada release in May by Shout Factory.  So unless the Japan version has extra tracks on it i'll hold off until I can order it here at home.

The link also focuses on the Human Rights Concerts which were held in '88.  U2 participated in one of those, or Edge and Bono did, on September 21, 1988.  It was a show held in LA.  Bono performed on "Chimes of Freedom" and "Get Up Stand Up" along with other artists.  I've found conflicting information on what Edge might have done, or if he was even there.

From wiki: "Each show began and ended with a group performance of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up", and before that closer, a Springsteen-led group rendition of Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom". At many venues, guest artists from the area were featured, as opening acts and in joining the main participants at times, especially during the opening and closing ensembles."

And answered my own question with the first link: "Japanese edition includes four bonus tracks each for DVD(s) and CD(s)." so I'll be watching for any U2 content in the bonus tracks, if there's none, I'll wait for the North American release.

I believe they will release only a reduced set in May in North America. The complete version would be available only in October. A bit confusing, so far.

There is a tracklist on the japan site, and the google transaltor use brings this results:

14. [Disc 1] MLK Pride
15. [Disc 1] Bloody Sunday

Get Up! Stand Up!” presents highlights from The Human Rights Concerts – the series of benefit concerts staged between 1986 and 1998 to raise awareness and funds for the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights organisation Amnesty International. The first set of performances come from “A Conspiracy Of Hope”, Amnesty’s 25th anniversary US concert tour in 1986. This was followed by “Human Rights Now!”, the historic 5-continent 20-concert world tour undertaken in 1988. The series continued with stand-alone concerts “An Embrace Of Hope” in Chile in 1990 and “The Struggle Continues” in Paris in 1998. The list of musicians who contributed their services is extraordinary and includes some of the world’s foremost artists - drawn from several nations and representing a wide range of musical styles. The primary factor uniting them was their desire to donate their time and talents to place a spotlight on Amnesty’s vital work campaigning for people whose human rights are abused. Building on the achievements of Amnesty’s legendary “Secret Policeman’s Ball” benefit shows, albums and movies - these concerts brought awareness of the cause to an ever-wider public. This new release is designed to continue that mission and raise further funds for Amnesty’s crucial work.

From “A Conspiracy Of Hope” (1986)
1) Bob Geldof & Steven Van Zandt – Redemption Song 2) Third World – Now That We’ve Found Love 3) Joan Armatrading – Love And Affection 4) Ruben Blades (with Carlos Santana & Fela Kuti) – Muevete 5) Miles Davis – Speak / That’s What Happened 6) Lou Reed – Walk On The Wild Side 7) Peter Gabriel – Shock The Monkey 8) Bryan Adams – Run To You 9) Bryan Adams – Summer Of ’69 10) U2 – MLK / Pride (In The Name Of Love) 11) U2 – Sunday Bloody Sunday 12) The Police – Message In A Bottle 13) The Police – Every Breath You Take

From “Human Rights Now!” (1988)
14) Tracy Chapman – Talkin’ ’bout A Revolution 15) Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer 16) Sting – Don’t Stand So Close To Me 17) Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – Born In The USA 18) Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – I’m On Fire

From “An Embrace Of Hope” (1990)
19) Inti-Illimani – Bailando, Bailando 20) Wynton Marsalis – Jungle Blues 21) Jackson Browne – Lives In The Balance 22) Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U

From “The Struggle Continues” (1998)
23) Bruce Springsteen – No Surrender 24) Tracy Chapman – Fast Car 25) Alanis Morissette – Hand In My Pocket 26) Peter Gabriel & Youssou N’Dour – Shaking The Tree 27) Jimmy Page & Robert Plant – Rock And Roll 28) Radiohead – Karma Police 29) Radiohead – Bones 30) Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman & Youssou N’Dour – Get Up, Stand Up

It's listed on amazon.ca as an import:

As June 15, 1986 performance of MLK/Pride was released on The Unforgettable Fire deluxe remaster, this means that only Sunday Bloody Sunday will be unique to this release, right?

Here's a link listing the contents of the 6-DVD set being released in the fall as stated on the
Human Rights website announcement (which PatrickM posted at the top of this thread).

http://evo88.com/en/music?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=789&category_id=29

(Disc 2) It seems we'll get the whole U2 concert from East Rutherford in '86 plus the Police set which includes Bono singing on Invisible Sun and the finale, I Shall be Released, with everyone on stage.
Note: U2's set and The Police set videos have already been up at WV for a long time plus boots of the original TV broadcast have been circulating since the AI concert was shown. And it's all up (unofficially) on Youtube, of course.

(Disc 6) Includes Bono and Damien Rice singing Walk On from the Electric Burma show in 2012.

At this point it appears the 6-DVD set will be released Oct 28 worldwide and Nov 5 in the US and Canada.

Thanks for the new information.  The content of that Human Rights website has changed.  It originally only referred to a 2-disc DVD, called "Get Up Stand Up!" which can still be ordered through Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Get-Up-Stand/dp/B00BPA2HVY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369404641&sr=8-2&keywords=get+up+stand+up

The information on the 6-disc set is brand new as far as I can remember, although it was suggested above that they'd release a shorter set in May and follow up with a longer set in the fall...  Wondering if the accompanying CD to this new version titled "¡RELEASED!" will contain additional U2 songs not included on the previous 2-CD set.  These definitely appear to be new CDs to accompany the new DVD.

Looks like the only CD release in the US is a 2-disc compilation of all the concerts. I guess I'll be ordering the DVD set from Amazon and the '86 concert CD from the UK.

OK, now you guys have gone and confused me. Are you saying there's a CD at Amazon UK that features more of U2's performance than the one at Amazon U.S.? I can't find anything like that when I search. What am I missing?

Search for A Conspiracy of Hope.

Or try that link.  It's a two CD set.  Being released Monday.  Includes "Maggie's Farm" which the US compilation did not.

The 2CD set is also available as an import with Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.  Often an item can be found in various countries' Amazon stories just by swapping .com/.co.uk/.ca/.etc.

http://www.amazon.com/iReleased-Human-Rights-Concerts-Conspiracy/dp/B00EITW4LC/ (http://www.amazon.com/iReleased-Human-Rights-Concerts-Conspiracy/dp/B00EITW4LC/)

Still, even with shipping, ordering directly from the UK store is better than ordering it as an import at the Canadian site (and similarly, I imagine, for the US site).

Yeah, I never have figured out why Amazon charges more for something they can import in bulk than for individual overseas shipping. Ordering directly from the UK is usually faster, too, given the one week difference in release dates.

Title: Re: Amnesty International Box Set
Post by: Aaron on October 28, 2013, 01:32:08 PM
So in the Spring of 2013 they released:

Get Up! Stand Up! on DVD (2-disc)
Get Up! Stand Up! on CD (2-disc)

Included were two tracks by U2, "MLK/Pride" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on both the CD and DVD.
There were bonus tracks on the release in Japan, but none of them were U2 tracks.
This was a worldwide release.

Now they are releasing a 6-disc DVD Set.
The DVD set includes the full concert from New Jersey including the tracks above, as well as "Bad", "Help!" and "Sun City", as well as Bono singing on the Police track "Invisible Sun" and in the finale "I Shall be Released".  Bonus footage will include Bono and Damien Rice singing "Walk On" and "One" from Electric Burma in 2012. Also included according to atu2.com is some old footage of some of the Amnesty acts performing at a bar after a show, which should include Bono.  This new version is being called "¡RELEASED!" and has a yellow cover like "Get Up! Stand Up!" did.

To accompany the DVD they are releasing a two disc CD set in the US and Canada. It contains one less U2 track, including only "MLK/Pride" and dropping "Sunday Bloody Sunday" which had been on the spring release.

In the UK they've announced a series of CDs to accompany the DVD release:
¡RELEASED! 1988: Human Rights Now (Blue Cover) - likely no U2 tracks - taken from the 1988 "Human Rights Now!" Concerts.
¡RELEASED! 1998: The Struggle Continues (Red Cover) - no U2 tracks - taken from December 10, 1998 concert in France - 2-CD.
¡RELEASED! 1990: An Embrace of Hope (Orange Cover) - single CD - no U2 content - Taken from Santiago Chile, October 13, 1990 concert.
¡RELEASED! 1986: A Conspiracy of Hope (Green Cover) - contains "MLK/Pride", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Maggies Farm" as well as "I Shall be Released". Omitted is U2's "Bad", "Help!" and "Sun City" as well as the Police with Bono doing "Invisible Sun" which are available on the DVD.

CDs are all showing "Made in Germany" on the back cover on the Amazon.co.uk site. So I expect it's a European wide release.  There is no sign of a release of these in North America at this time, just the yellow version.

The website humanrightsconcerts.com also says that there will be a digital release of 90 songs.

http://www.crybabycry.biz/humanrightsconcerts.html may help you to sort this all out.

Everything suggests that the blue covered CD is the Human Rights Now concert from Buenos Aires Argentina, and if it is there will be no U2 content on the disc.  I can't confirm that the CDs do contain that concert though, but it is the concert used for the DVD.  So pretty safe bet it was used for the audio as well...

I may forego the CD altogther then, since it's incomplete, and just make an audio rip of the DVD. Haven't decided yet, but the CD has at least been downgraded to "don't have to buy immediately"...

Looks like the DVD will include a clip from a 1986 hotel bar jam session. A Bongolese track called "Peach Jam," apparently.

I got the Conspiracy of Hope CD in the mail today.

MLK/Pride and SBS are pretty much identical to the "Get Up, Stand Up" release. Slightly different edits so the track times are a few seconds off. SBS fades directly into Maggie's Farm. Bono introduces I Shall Be Released and performs on the track.

I edited some iTunes cover art for anyone interested.

Edited to add... Seems odd that I now have two different versions of Maggie's Farm on CD.

Received the DVD set today. I like the packaging; five individual slim plastic DVD cases in a slipcase. Conspiracy of Hope is a two-disc set and the rest are single DVDs.

So far I've just watched Peach Jam which is, er, interesting.

Concerning the following:
¡RELEASED! 1986: A Conspiracy of Hope (Green Cover) contains:
"MLK/Pride", "Bad", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Maggies Farm", "Help!" and "Sun City"

Question 1:
I'm considering buying these tracks on iTunes, thanks to Brad's informative post above.  Putting aside the CD and DVD collector aspect, none of these performances are unique audio-wise, are they?

Question 2:
Isn't the only reason to be interested in them . . . . . is the fact that they of historical significance . . . . . . that Amnesty International is a just cause and these tracks were performed during these important concerts?

For example, the version of Bad . . . . . it's track time is only 5:46 on iTunes.  That's not the complete version of Bad as we know it, is it?

I just listened to the iTunes samples of Maggies Farm, Help! and Sun City and . . . . I have no interest in buying them.

So . . . . if anyone has an opinion on Question 1 and 2 above, I'd like to hear it.

The CD with the green cover has the following songs:
MLK - Pride
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Maggie's Farm
I Shall Be Released

It does not contain Bad, Help! Invisible Sun or Sun City.  Those are available through iTunes.

In both cases the songs are the same performances, and taken from the same concert.  So if you buy Maggie's Farm on CD, it's the same version you would buy through iTunes, with perhaps minor edits at the start and end of the material where things have been cut from the CD.

These are not studio tracks, they are as performed live, in concert back in 1986.  I love live material, and will take any that I can get.  I've had bootlegs of this material in the past, but much prefer a nice edited version from original tapes, rather than something made from a low end television broadcast.  I'm happy to have the full show.  Really happy they did release the entire thing through iTunes.

As for the length of "Bad" - they were staring the stage with a number of acts that day so perhaps were not able to turn it into a 10 minute sprawling song.  It sounds complete to me on disc.  I'd have to go back to the boots I have to see if anything was cut out of the performance.

As for whether or not you should buy - that's up to you.  Some here collect one version of every release, some are nuts enough to collect one version of every release from every country, some go one step further and collect every pressing from every country that has a release.  Doesn't matter how little or how much you collect, you'll be welcome here.  So buy what you get enjoyment from, and if you don't think these will add any enjoyment, skip them.  :)

Just got my DVD box set.    Some amazing stuff on it beyond the Giants Stadium tracks.  Bono appears in the film of the 1988 tour.  And there's a bonus track from the 1988 L.A. show with Bono on Chimes Of Freedom.  The two Electric Burma performances (One and Walk On).  Bono is all over the documentary Light A Candle - both historic and new interview.  Bruce Springsteen interview (about 20 mins) includes his rave about U2.

The quality of the iTunes release is very good.

I have had this for years as an FM broadcast, and recenty it was available at Wolfgang's Vault.

The sound quailty is much better now. Nice to have the complete show from iTunes, THX slaneman

I don't usually buy from them as I always get hit with duty.

The 5-CD set is tempting... Looks like it actually has 68 tracks total.  :P

I got the Japanese DVD as well now. The U2 material is the same, with the exception of optional Japanese subtitles (I can't tell if they are any good)....

It does have some additional tracks vs. the European release:
The Hooters - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Peter, Paul & Mary - No Easy Walk To Freedom
Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul - Sanctuary
Joan Baez - Let It Be
These are the audio titles (from the Conspiracy of Hope full 68 tracks) missing on the European DVD. So the two Japanese releases (CD & DVD) both have the full track-listing for the 1986 concert.
