Title: U2.com Magnificent info
Post by: slaneman on May 02, 2009, 12:04:20 PM
U2.com email--

"Just a reminder that 'Magnificent', the second single taken from 'No Line On The Horizon', will be released in the UK on the 4th May.

The new single will be released on 7" single and will also be available digitally. The 7" will be a limited edition, featuring on the a-side 'Magnificent' (Edit), and on the b-side, 'Breathe', taken from a recent live show recorded at the Somerville Theatre in Boston, USA. Click here to order your copy of the 'Magnificent' 7" from HMV.com.

U2 'Magnificent' Remixes are number one in the UK Music Week Club Charts!

There are some fantastic remixes of 'Magnificent' from Pete Tong (Tong & Rodgers Wonderland Remix), Redanka 360, Fred Falke, and Adam K & Soha. Also available on the same day digitally is the Justice Remix of 'Get On Your Boots'.

These will be available from Sunday 3rd May on iTunes and all good digital download stores.

Watch out next week for the premiere of the video for 'Magnificent', so keep an eye on U2.com for news on this! The video has been directed by Alex Courtes (director of 'Get On Your Boots', 'Vertigo' and 'City of Blinding Lights' videos), and was shot in Fez, Morocco."

I guess CDs really are dead...

There are already three different "digital" EPs on the iTunes store in Ireland

Magnificent (With 2 Remixes)
1. Magnificent (UK Edit) 4:21
2. Magnificent (Fred Falke Full Club Mix) 7:20
3. Get On Your Boots (Justice Remix) 3:26
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=314670760&s=143449

Magnificent (With 3 Remixes)
1. Magnificent (UK Edit) 4:21
2. Magnificent (Wonderland Remix) 9:54
3. Magnificent (Redanka's 360 Version) 7:23
4. Magnificent (Adam K and Soha Club Mix) 6:14
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=314605486&s=143449

Magnificent (With Live Tracks & Remix)
1. Magnificent (Edit) 4:20
2. Breathe (Live from Somerville Theatre, Boston) 4:45
3. Vertigo (Live from Somerville Theatre, Boston) 3:47
4. Get On Your Boots (Justice Remix) 3:26
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=314621016&s=143449

I have heard from someone in Dublin that the 3-track CD single was released on Friday there, but no sign of the 2-track CD.  I haven't heard anything about a CD release of the remixes; hoping that a promo will surface.

I would be surprised if any of these EPs make it to the iTunes store in the US.  The music industry here is (stupidly) still all about album sales, which is one of many reasons they are dying a slow and painful death.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are no physical singles at all with the next album.  I'd be OK with that if I could download them in some lossless format.

there are 2 cd single version here in europe:

Magnificent 1 on cardsleeve
1. Magnificent (4:21)
2. Breathe (Live from Somerville Theatre, Boston) (4:45)

Magnificent 2 on slimline jewelcase
1. Magnificent (4:21)
2. Vertigo (Live from Somerville Theatre, Boston) (3:48)
3. Get On Your Boots (Justice Remix) (3:26)

hope they release the remixes on cd too, even if I am not a great fan of (this kind) remixes...

Trevor, any difference between the single version and the US radio edit?  I had assumed they were the same since the length is identical.

I've ordered the two CD singles from a seller in the US.  His supplier had the release date as May 19, but hopefully if they are out already I'll get them a bit sooner.

My two Euro CDs are on their way as of Friday, and my vinyl has shipped from the UK as well.  No sign of a UK CD this time out?!  I could find the European ones but no sign of a UK release on amazon...strange...Bloc Party - another band I'm a fan of has also stopped releasing CD singles in the UK and is now doing the 7" vinyl / digital release thing...

No sign of the single in the Canada iTunes store, or in shops, but I wouldn't expect to see it in either until Tuesday at the earliest, and more likely one week from Tuesday, as the case has been more recently.  Nothing on amazon.ca that i've seen so far.

Best start trying to make sense of all of this for the By Songs list...

This digital-only bullshit is...well, bullshit.  I don't feel I have something official if there's no packaging to go with it.  It's like we're marking the end of collecting.  And then these remixes are in Ireland only???  I can't even download them because I'm in the U.S.???  This is fast becoming a pretty infuriating time to be a U2 fan...  >:(

To each their own, I buy CDs sometimes just to support the artist, but I prefer to just have things digitally... less clutter, less packaging, more portable. :)

Kinda funny how I ended up working with a diehard collector type hehe.

More and more bands are going the digital only route.  U2's dabbled in it from time to time - just see the "digital" page in the discography.  I think you'll see more and more evidence of this in certain markets.  I mean the USA hasn't seen a CD single since 1997 from the band.  It appears that they've stopped putting out singles in Japan with this latest release.  And this latest step to pull the UK CD single in favor for just doing a 7" seems another step forward in the coffin of the CD single.

It's sad to see it disappearing, but more and more acts are going that way and singles get harder and harder to find with each shop I go into over here in Canada...its sad but as i have less and less time for the collecting anyway I'm not crying too hard at it's passing...

It looks like a 7" plus a digital download is the new reality.  Coldplay did the same thing recently with Life In Technicolor II.  Seems like a compromise between giving the collectors something to collect and facing the fact that most people prefer to download their music these days.

Unfortunately, it's easier to import a CD than it is to buy a track from a foreign download store, and most of these tracks never seem to end up in the US market.  I'm hoping that they at least keep making promo CDs for awhile, though that's an expensive option.
Title: Re: U2.com Magnificent info
Post by: God, Part II on May 03, 2009, 08:37:59 PM
But surely there are still more CD collectors than vinyl ones, yes?  I can't abide vinyl, personally, and downloads outright suck, not only for the reasons I've already stated but because their audio fidelity is never as high in quality as a CD track.  And, again, this crap of certain areas of the world not even having access to the damnable downloads...argh!

Bet you a paycheck these digital download exclusives are compiled on a CD for next year's incentive to sign up/renew at U2.com, though...I have to hope that at least I may have that to look forward to...

I'm pretty much CD only myself; I have some older stuff on vinyl but I'm not much of a collector.  I'd like to see CD singles continue, but it seems that the market is drying up.  Vinyl is more of a nostalgia item with a vocal minority.

No sign of a UK CD this time out?!

I'm hearing that the UK singles are either "deleted" or "delayed indefinitely."  I don't see how something that's never been released can be deleted, so I think the translation is "never going to happen."

Sounds like the record label is running some (over the top, panic mode) damage control after NLOTH failed to keep lighting up the charts.  You ask me, U2's grand lesson to take from all of this--never release an album outside of 4th Quarter again...

I'm pretty sure the only reason for the delay of a worldwide release is the video, maybe ... I hope, would hate to see the CD single die.

Could someone please recommend an online retailer where I can buy the two Euro CDs ???

hmv.com (vinyl only), amazon.com (1 CD released May 19) and amazon.co.uk only has them listed from other sellers.

Cheers,

You might try idealcopy.com.  Though it looks like they have now pushed their release date back to May 26.  Not sure what's up with that.

There's always eBay.

I bought mine from a source in the Netherlands on eBay.  $12.99 US for the 2-track and $14.99 US for the 3-track, with free shipping.  Not a bargain but at least you'll have them.  Still has some copies available...

I finally got my CD singles yesterday.  I had to order them from the shop in The Netherlands too. The seller I usually order through never received any stock.  It's been a very long time since I've gotten a new single release from U2 and felt like I'm holding something rare.

The store is music-entertainmentshop.nl, though they don't currently have the single on their site.  They do still have a few copies on eBay.  I think this bungled single release has been a real windfall for them.

today I listened the 7" for the first time... 'cause I thought the uk edit was the same as the one on the cds, same length... but I discovered it is different...
these are the differences, do not count the silence at begin and end of the tracks...

uk edit:
0:19 - oh oh magnificent
0:28 - I was born...
from 3:12 to 3:35 - long guitar solo

edit (longer intro):
0:20 - magnificent
0:30 - oh oh magnificent
0:41 - I was born...
from 3:24 to 3:35 - short guitar solo

from 3:35 to 4:22 identical for both version...

A local radio station is playing an edit that has the full length album intro, but NO guitar solo.  Honestly, I always think they're playing the album version until it's time for the guitar solo, and then it totally skips over it.  The edit is not in sync and sounds pretty bad, so I'm wondering if the radio station did its own custom edit?

Thanks Trevor, I just listened to the UK Edit from iTunes.  It is the edit from the vinyl with the longer guitar solo as you described.

There is also the 5-track promo.

The difference between the 5 and 10 track is:

5 track
UK Mercury Promo plastic sleeve with printed paper
1. Adam K Club Mix  6.14
2. Fred Falke Full Mix   7.20
3. Fred Falke Radio Edit   3.58
4. Pete Tong Remix   9.54
5. Redanka Vocal 360  7.23

10 track
INTR-12601-2
1. Edit 4:21
2. Dave Aude' Club Remix 7:34
3. Dave Aude' Club Dub Remix 7:47
4. Fred Falke Full Club Mix 7:20
5. Adam K and Soha Club Mix 6:15
6. Adam K and Soha Dub Mix 6:15
7. Wonderland Remix 9:55
8. Wonderland Dub Remix 6:52
9. Redanka's 360 Version 7:23
10. Redanka's 180 Version 8:19

I assume Fred Falke Full Mix (7.20) is the same as the Fred Falke Full Club Mix (7.20), and that the same applies for the Adam K Club Mix and Adam K and Soha Club Mix
I ordered both but haven't received any yet, so haven't heard them/

At least here in Finland, the tracklist for the 5-track remix promo CD is:

1. Fred Falkes Remix Radio Edit 4.01
2. Fred Falkes Remix Full Edit 7.21
3. Adam K Club Mix 6.14
4. Pete Tong Remix 9.54
5. Redanka Remix 7.23

It is a paper sleeve in a plastic bag. On the sleeve there is no catalogue number, but on the disc it says U2CDMREMIX.

I feel bad for those who paid 100s for a CDR when the same thing will be released on an official CD for less than $10.

But really, who could have predicted this?  Not only has U2 not released a CD single in the US since Pop, but really, there is no CD single market in the US at all anymore.  Even the European countries have been canceling the Magnificent single.

This release is so far out of the norm that I can still hardly believe it.  In fact, I WON'T believe it until I actually have the CD in my hands!

That's surprising. I would have expected a single version instead of a radio edit as well as some of the EU b-sides. I'm glad I didn't pay too much for my promo copy after all, but still...

Now, to find the RAC Mix...
Title: Re: U2.com Magnificent info

The plot thickens: the remix single on amazon has added a track list, but it's not 10-tracks. It's the same 5 as on iTunes USA. It also dropped from $8.98 to $7.99.
Best Buy has a the same track list as the 10-track promo.
Both are to be released June 9.
If I knew how, I'd look up the pre-order Terms of Service to see if either website could bait-and-switch you.
I really hope the Best Buy one is right. Not to rub salt in anyone's wounds, but I'd rather not pay $100 or more for a CD, no matter how cool it is.

A bit of a disappointment - to say the least - that there has been no physical CD issue here in the UK.

I've been getting each single since The Fly (and have retrospectively gone back to collect others) so I'm keen to get something for Magnificent (which is one of the best tracks on NLOTH).

I'll be seeing the band in Paris in July; anyone know if the single with the live version of Breathe is / will be available in France?

Apparently Ideal Copy has been sending out emails to customers overseas stating that the US Magnificent Remixes CDs is, in fact, only 5 tracks.

So all of you (OK, us) that have been kicking yourselves for buying the promo can probably rest easy that it does indeed include otherwise unreleased tracks and will retain it's value.

I was afraid of that.
I pre-ordered on Best Buy because Amazon had changed the product details to 5 tracks. Best Buy still hasn't. They probably have something in the pre-order ToS that protects them in case the product description changes between pre-order and release. I'm still crossing my fingers for now, but I think I can cancel very close to the wire. Better check that too...
I still would rather not pay $100 for a CD, especially a current release in not-very-limited numbers.

Nerts to me. Nerts to them too, they're losing an order.
The saddest thing is that's a pretty standard clause in business today, and pretty much allows them to give you something other than what you bought. It's like if you brought an apple to the checkout at the grocery store and they switched it for a pound of hamburger after you paid.

CD Universe still says it's 10 tracks as well.  I'm inclined to believe the Ideal Copy, but I'd like to see the 10-track version released if only to frustrate those who are selling the promo on ebay for way more than it's worth.

I know, I've got my fingers crossed. Especially because I asked them to cancel my pre-order last night (very early this morning, technically) but got notification today it's been shipped. I can still return it if it's what we're expecting, but still.

Well, interesting at least that yours shipped. I was half expecting them to cancel the release at the last minute.

Honestly, I'm surprised that no one has seen one of these in the wild yet given that a lot of retailers receive their stock for the next week on Friday.

I am a member of CollectU2@yahoogroups.com and another member there by the name of Darek Prokopowicz said he received the following email in his inbox from IdealCopy:

Thank you for ordering U2 - Magnificent (Remixes) CD from IdealCopy.com. Since you ordered, the track listing has been updated. Originally our supplier listed 10 tracks. That was incorrect. The CD will actually have 5 tracks. There is no 10-track commercial release for this single.
What hasn't changed is that this is still a US exclusvie release. We have continued to receive orders from all over the world since we updated the track listing, so we are confident that most customers will still want this item. However, we realize that since there was a track listing change, some may want to change their order. If you would like to change your order in any way, please review the product page on our site first (Search "Magnificent Remixes"), and get back to us by email. If we do not hear back from you by June 9 2009, we will process and ship your order as is.
Please note: The attached invoice is your original invoice - if you made any changes to your order, they will not be reflected in the attachment. Please contact IdealCopyOrders@ idealcopy. com if you cannot open/view the attachment or if you have questions. This may be your only invoice, so please keep it for your records - we are cutting down on paper invoices for environmental reasons.

Thank you for your business - we appreciate it very much.

Sincerely,

IdealCopy.com

I'll buy it, seeing as it's a) an official release and b) less fragile than a CD-R, but now I don't have to kick myself for buying the promo...although spending $100 for what amounts now to only five exclusive tracks hurts, lemme tell ya...

I'm surprised a copy of this hasn't turned up "in the wild" yet, either.  I have avoided ordering it online because I'm still not sure about the tracklisting.  Best Buy's web site says "in store pickup not available," which means their brick and mortar stores won't actually carry it.  I'm planning to go to my local indie record store tomorrow to buy a copy.

I held off buying the promo for this reason. Sorry to all that paid a crazy amount for it. Very strange releases for this single.
Title: Good luck, bad luck, who knows?
Post by: Z000 on June 08, 2009, 11:08:32 PM
A modern retelling of an old zen parable:

U2 releases a promotional CD of 10 remixes of Magnificent. I think, "Wow, cool!" but a voice in the back of my head suggests, "Good luck, bad luck, who knows?"

All copies of the promo on eBay begin only as low as $50 and end typically over $100. Unemployed, I can't afford to spend that much on a CD, no matter how spectacular. Bad luck for me. But still I wonder, "Good luck, bad luck, who knows?"

A commercial release for less than $10 is announced online, so I pre-order it on Best Buy and practically count down the hours until its release. Good luck, bad luck, who knows?

Every other website carrying the single changes the description from 10 tracks to the 5 available on iTunes. Good luck, bad luck, who knows?

Because there are still days before the CD's release, I can still cancel my Best Buy pre-order. Good luck, bad luck, who knows?

The e-mail regarding my cancellation request arrives 15 minutes after an e-mail saying my order has been shipped. It says they requested the Logistics Support team to halt the delivery if they can, and suggests I return it by mail or in-store if they cannot. I will still not be refunded the shipping charges either way I return it, and the order has already been charged to my bank account. Good luck, bad luck, who knows?

The USPS website doesn't recognize the tracking number attached to the shipping statement. Good luck, bad luck, who knows?

A 10-track commercial single of Magnificent arises on eBay. USPS says it has received electronic notification to expect my item. Good luck, bad luck, who knows?

I really expected the US version to be the 5 track one.

But there is still this 7 track version.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=300320205602&Category=307&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2

I'm not going for it. I've had enough of this Magnificent abacadabra. But I'm curious to know if this 7 track is real or fake. It looks real to me, but then the picture isn't that clear.
Anyone knows for sure?

I got my copy of the US Magnificent single at a local record store today... it is indeed the 10-track version as pictured in the ebay photos above.  How strange to buy a U2 CD single produced in the US... in 2009!

So BestBuy sells the 10 track while Amazon has the 5 track ??   I'm confused

Unfortunately BestBuy doesn't ship to Europe, so... I would really appreciate it if one of you living in the US would be so kind to buy an extra copy of the 10 track and send it to me. Of course I will cover the costs including shipping costs using PayPal.
Or alternatively, I can send you the European (Dutch) version of the 3-track and 2-track.

Thank you,
Alex
The Netherlands

Alex, amazon.com just has the wrong track listing posted.  If you buy the CD at this link, you'll get the 10-track version.

Funny though that Amazon still has the wrong tracklist up.

SO CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THE U2 MAGNIFICENT MAXI CD SINGLE "COMMERCIAL" WITH 10 TRACKS HAVE THE SAME 10 TRACKS THAN THE PROMO CD-R THAT I HAVE?
Title: Re: U2.com Magnificent info
Post by: jw on June 10, 2009, 12:01:03 PM
I've heard from a mailing list that the track listing of the single is the same as the promo.  They said the artwork is a little different, but didn't describe in what wy.
Title: Re: U2.com Magnificent info

The cover art is similar to that of the first commercial single, with the band on it -- specifically the two-track single, for which the picture has red and gold tinting. The track listing is identical to the CD-R promo, including repeatedly spelling David Audé as Aude'.

I can say this with complete confidence because I just got it in the mail. When I saw it was indeed 10 tracks, my life exploded.

Scans to come.

So, anyone with free time on their hands to do a waveform analysis between the consumer CD and the promo CD-R to see if there are any audio quality differences?  In other words, does one sound better than the other?

Back of insert:

I'm not happy with the color correction on this one. The scanner made it too orange, but in trying to darken the red it's turned a little magenta or something.

Back of jewel case:
I figured it was just a glitch on the promo, but apparently nobody at the studio knows how to type an é. I'm sure "Dave Aude' " gets it all the time

Front of disc:
A little glitchy in the upper left, trying to clean up my discolored scanner padding in the background.

Back of disc:

Also a little rough around the edges. Whatever the numbers on there mean, hopefully they're readable enough for anyone who wants them.

In general, my scanner didn't quite capture the colors, and also is covered in dust, fingerprints, and weird streaks of unknown origin.
So if someone else wants to upload better pics, go for it. But these are 300dpi and between 600 and 700 pixels height & width, if you wanna just save, resize (maybe tweak the coloring?), and load them in the discog entry.
