The Saints Are Coming
« on: September 27, 2006, 09:59:21 PM »
Version 1 from Rhapsody 3:30, was a studio recording. I bought it at 10 pm during the game.

Version 2 from Rhapsody 3:27, was downloadable sometime shortly after that. Version 1 was replaced with version 2. This live version cuts off the last verse with Edge singing along with BJ and Bono which everone saw. I bought this one when I heard there was a different version online.

Great song.

I've been listening to all three versions, the studio version included, and they are all distinctly different.

I agree the original Rhapsody sounds like a studio track with audience noise mixed in, but it is a distinctly different vocal take.

On the promo version, Bono sings "Until the clouds unroll and you come down," while on the Rhapsody version he sings "Until the clouds unroll and you come home."

He also adds several lines, starting with "New birth to the rebirth."

There are also horns in the Rhapsody version that are not on the promo version.

I'll most my transcription in the lyrics section so you can compare the differences.

I only have 2 Rhapsodies plus a vid of the show. The second Rhapsody (current download) is from the show. I've compared 2nd Rhapsody with the video, they are the same for sure.

Where did you get or hear the promo version???

Heh. Well I just taped it off the radio.  $50 is a little rich for my blood, especially considering they've already announced a commercial release.

Promo is quite a bit different and sounds more like The Skids version, which I like a lot anyway. I'll buy this release when it appears.

Hope everyone buys a Music Rising t-shirt!

Now available in iTunes quality (128 kbps AAC) audio at U2.com

Click.

[cough]Right-click-save-as[/cough]

Not sure why they would post an unsecured file with the same quality you would get paying 99 cents on iTunes, but there it is.

I saved this version from U2.com, exported it to MPEG-4 with the audio passthrough option using QuickTime Pro, changed the extension from .mp4 to .m4a, changed the type and creator (it's a Mac thing) using FileInfo, dumped it into iTunes, and now I've got a "near-CD quality" version on my iPod.

Or at least the same quality you would get downloading from iTunes.

Thanks, U2.com!  I'll still be buying the commercial single when it's released.

I'm guessing that Rhapsody version 1 was put together from the studio version and a livish rehearsal from the day before.  The simplified guitar tracks, horns, and addition of the extra verse make it seem more like a sterile live recording rather than an actual studio track to me.

I think that was a version that Rhapsody threw together for people who went to download the track immediately after the performance.  They took it down as soon as the live version was mixed, and I doubt it will ever surface again.
