Title: The Complete U2 now available in iTunes Plus
Post by: Crayon on May 23, 2009, 10:00:31 AM
I was notified on another forum that The Complete U2 is now available in iTunes Plus (for those who have purchased it while it was available).

A little story of warning, should you be in the same situation as I were. I bought the upgrade for $45 and was surprised to find that it updated both my DRM'd copies, one from 2006 and another from 2004. It's a Good Thing I backed up the original DRM'd files so I still have both copies, which differ in some parts.

Are individual tracks available for upgrade in the Canadian iTunes store?

The Complete U2 is still filled with errors.

The first drumbeat of Sunday Bloody Sunday on War is still cut off. From The Last Night On Earth Single, Last Night On Earth (First Night In Hell Mix) is actually Pop Muzik and Numb (The Soul Assassins Mix) is one of the Happiness Is A Warm Gun mixes with the intro cut.  There were a couple of other mislabled tracks that I am forgetting.

Still, after five years you would think they could have sorted this out.

I do have one individual track available to upgrade in my (US) iTunes.  I can't recall if I repurchased that track separately or what.

Electrical Storm - First track is labeled as the William Orbit Radio Edit, but is actually the "Band Version" (which is already included).

I'll post more errors if I find them. I had, no kidding, just finished re-ripping all of my CD albums and singles to 256 kbps AAC this Friday morning.  I will probably keep the tracks that I've ripped myself in my iTunes library and only use The Complete U2 tracks to fill in the gaps.  :P

We had a Complete U2 bloopers thread back in 2004 as I recall.  ::)

That's funny, I did it the other way around. But partly that has to do with the fact I didn't know at the time of purchase that the "Complete" U2 was anything but that.

Are all these errors associated with the US iTunes version of Complete U2? I have a version from the Finnish iTunes store, and no sign of any of these mistakes.. SBS is complete, First Night in Hell Mix and Soul Assassins Mix are what they are supposed to be, as is Electrical Storm.

These are all in the US iTunes Plus version that I downloaded on Friday. The error on SBS is definitely a holdover from 2004.  Someone had even emailed iTunes and were told that was the way the band intended it.  ::)

The others I think might be new, but there were other mislabeled tracks back in 2004.  I remember having Paint It Black mislabeled as some other track from that single.

I ordered my copy in the summer of 2005. It seems that all the errors had been fixed by then, Sunday Bloody Sunday is complete and even Discotheque on the Pop album is the 5:21 album version, not the single version. WTSHNN on the single is the Best of edit, but that seems to be the band's decision these days  :-\.

Same here. Mine also didn't have Paint it Black, Pop Muzik, Happiness is a Warm Gun, or any of the cover songs that were b-sides in the 80s. In fact, I assumed they did that intentionally because they didn't have the rights to them. The only cover song included were the two remixes of Night and Day. Those b-sides were the main reason I started filling out the collection.

Does this iTunes Plus upgrade include any additional songs, or just improve the quality of the ones you already have? It'd be damn convenient.

Nope. Same 446 tracks as before.

I've also compared the waveforms, and the early singles etc. appear to be from the same masters as the previous iTunes release, not the more compressed CD remasters.

For those interested, here's a marked up screen shot of the playlist I created a couple of years ago. It contains all the tracks that showed a difference in playing time. Current iTunes shows most of them as being the same length, which I take to mean that they really are the same version. In an earlier version many of them showed a difference of one second.

Notable differences are A Sort Of Homecoming, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Yahweh, Discothèque and Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (The Temple Bar Mix). The others are probably the same versions with different amounts of silence at the end I'd guess. I haven't checked them out thoroughly.

This does not include versions that are the same in both releases, yet the wrong versions compared to the physical releases as mentioned elsewhere here in the forum.

I just noticed, 5 years too late, that the Lemon remixes Momo Beats and Momo's Reprise are actually the same track.  Momo Beats should be 4:25 in length, but both tracks are 4:09, just like Momo's Reprise should be.

Holy crap, you're right. I somehow convinced myself years ago that I heard a difference, but I just compared the waveforms and they're identical.

That's bunk. Now I have another vinyl to rip. Not to mention hunting it down and buying it in the first place. Shazbot.

I was similarly suspicious of the Monster Truck Mix and Lab Rat Mix of Staring At the Sun, but those waveforms appear to have some subtle differences. Not sure I could point out the difference when listening, though.

Damn it. Is it too late to demand we get the tracks that we paid for? If it says Momo's Beats, it should be Momo's Beats and nothing else..

I've noticed the mistake about Momo's Beat a long time before and told it apple to correct it. Their answer was I had the opinion to download the misnamed song again. It was just the same to the ipod-unplayable Chains, i've downloaded again and again without getting better. Very professional...

Can any of you distinguish, by the way, which version of Angel of Harlem is included in the set? It seems that it is either the album or the single version duplicated, but which is it?

This is exactly why I just reripped my own CD collection and used The Complete U2 to fill in the blanks. Too many single versions duplicated as album versions and vice versa.

Just some notes on the whole "Complete U2"...

First of all you may wonder where the 'cover artwork' came from.  It was all taken from u2wanderer.org.  If there's an identifying mark, wrinkle, hole, scuff in the covers you get from itunes, compare it to the artwork here.  It's mostly my collection.

The whole Complete iTunes came about very quick for the band.  Unexpectedly fast from my discussions with those in the know.  There was a scramble to try to get things done, and I was approached to help out with the project.  Unfortunately they decided to go another route, and although they used the scans for the project, I'm not sure where the track listing came from that they eventually released.  At one point I know they were using the "By Song" list as their guide.

At the time it made me pretty proud of this site.

But yeah, they only had a couple of weeks to put it all together for Apple, and i'm not surprised at all that some things got missed or misnamed along the way.

Which I always found odd because Four5One obviously has pristine copies of a lot of the cover art which were used for the singles lithographs sold on U2.com:  Three, 11 O'clock Tick Tock, and Pride for example.

No offense meant, Aaron.  ;)

It was fourfiveone who approached me initially and brought me in on the project.  they had all that stuff but couldn't put their hands on the individual materials in time...

Just bought the upgrade, and have discovered an error I didn't have the first time around. The "All I Want Is You" single claims to be the same two tracks it used to be, but the second one, the album version of "All I Want Is You," is actually "Unchained Melody." Kind of happy about having a new song, but it's thrown me off my game plan (upgrade to iTunes Plus, throw out master copy of original download). And also now I have to check every track for inconsistencies. Not happy about that at all.

Update: After a quick once-through the only misprint I discovered besides what's already been mentioned (Electrical Storm, Unchained Melody, Pop Muzik, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, and Lemon (Momo's Beats)) is that Night and Day (Steel String Remix) is really Satellite of Love.

I backed up both the original download and the upgrade to DVD, but my iTunes library is my own CD rips. The only things I kept from iTunes were things I don't already own on CD.

regarding the william orbit radio edit (sorry but I haven't read this trhead before) this is what itunes reply to my question:

Dear Trevor,

I'm sorry to learn that "Electrical Storm" did not meet the standard of quality you have come to expect from the iTunes Store. I have submitted the item for investigation. Apple takes the quality of the items offered on the iTunes Store seriously and will investigate the issue with "Electrical Storm", but I can't say when or if the issue will be resolved. Please try again in a few weeks.

I have also issued a replacement song credit to your account, which you can use to buy the individual song of your choice from the iTunes Store.

...at least they give me back the 99cent for that song ...maybe if I reported all the errors I had the upgrade for free...

I have also ripped my entire cd collection to apple lossless to create my personal and with no errors complete u2 and I noticed that the track "mofo (mother's mix)" from the mofo cd single has a little blip in the first second of the track on right channel... I have 2 edition, europe and canada, used eac in secure mode and both have the same blip... the funny thing is that this blip is not present on the itunes file... in all these errors they correct one track... my european cd also have the tracks in this order: if god grand jury, mofo (mother's mix), mofo (phunk force)... but I discovered it is standard for all of the eropean edition...

They'd probably only refund the ones that are duplicates mislabeled as other tracks, which is just Electrical Storm (Single Version) and Lemon (Momo's Beats). But it's worth a try. I might even e-mail them myself.

Sure enough, I e-mailed them with all six track errors and got credits for five free songs. My guess is I only got five because I told them the Lemon (Momo's Beats) error was from before the upgrade, but had reported the errors from my upgrade purchase. I plan to report Lemon again but as an error from the original purchase. Unless I get the same customer service rep it should work.

The best part is that they're credits for free songs, not 99 cent credits, since many songs cost 1.29 now.
