The Edge and "Goldeneye"
« on: September 27, 2012, 02:43:07 PM »
According to a post in the comments on The Second Disc blog, the new James Bond 50 compilation album finally includes proper credit to The Edge for actually performing on the song "Goldeneye," as opposed to just co-writing it with Bono.  The discography entry here at U2Wanderer already alludes to this, but perhaps the upcoming Bond compilation will make it more clear.

Here's the full comment:
Credited on “Goldeneye” is The Edge, who has long been rumoured to have played guitar on the title track to that film, sung by Tina Turner. (Bono & The Edge penned the song, appropriate as Chris Blackwell, the man who signed U2 to Island Records, allowed Bono and his wife to Honeymoon at his house in the Carrabbien, called “Golden Eye”, it was previously the home of Sir. Ian Flemming, the creator of James Bond….), Also Eric Sierra’s vocal cuts have background vocals by Rupert Hine…

LOL.  I just get the Goldeneye entries re-written for the new discography launch and there's already new news.  :)

Got it.  :)

Goldeneye / Tina Turner
(P. Hewson, D. Evans)
from the Virgin Records Soundtrack GoldenEye, 1994
(c) 1995 EMI Records Ltd.

A similar compilation was issued in 2008.  It was also called "Best of Bond...James Bond".  Same compiler, Frank Collura.  That one featured "Surrender" by k.d. Lang, and "James Bond Theme" by John Arnold on the main disc.  Both of those have been removed on the new one and replaced with "Another Way to Die" by Jack White / Alicia Keys for the new release.  Otherwise the two discs are the same including track arrangement.

The 2008 one however did come with an extra disc that was a DVD and included the video for "GoldenEye" - the actual Tina Turner video, not the in movie opening to "GoldenEye".  It might be worth looking for.

No credits here to The Edge other than on writing.

I picked up the two disc version because there were some tracks I wanted on the bonus disc.  So it wasn't just a U2 fishing expedition.  :)

Sadly had I paid more attention i would have seen that the initial comment was made by Todd Richards, a DJ who once interviewed me about u2wanderer.org on WBWC radio.  LOL.  I'll ask him about his comment but I think he's just reading up on U2wanderer - lol.  He's a fan of the site and uses it for programming the U2 Marathon that he and Mary Cipriani do annually....

Dang!  Sorry to lead you astray there.  I was hoping the comment came from someone who was somehow involved with the release and had seen an early version of the artwork or something.  That's what I get for taking a comment at face value!

No worries.  I've been aware of these compilations for a while so I knew what I was probably getting... :)

The first edition I know of was released in 1999.  since then there's been a new one released with each James Bond movie.  Each time one is issued, it adds the theme for the last Bond movie, keeping the compilation always one movie behind.  Thus for the release of "Skyfall" we are finally getting the theme from Quantum of Solace by Jack Black and Alicia Keys added to the compilation.  They don't include the current movie to keep interest in the actual soundtrack high.
