OTHER NOTES |
In 2004 the Make Poverty
History campaign got it's start. Leading the charge was Bob Geldof
who had spearheaded the 1984 recording of the song "Do They Know it's Christmas?"
by the cream of British pop and rock acts. Twenty years later, he
again revisted the song with the current best of the bunch. Not mentioned
in the publicity campaign was a third recording of the song back in 1989.
The 2004 version featured Chris Martin, Dido, Robbie Williams, Sugababes,
Fran Healey, Justin Hawkins, Bono, Will Young, Jamelia, Ms Dynamite, Beverly
Knight, Joss Stone, Tom Chaplin, Dizzee Rascal, and Busted on vocals.
Only Bono was present from the original 1984 session, although Paul McCartney
does appear again on this re-recording as well perfoming on bass, which
Adam Clayton performed on the original version.
The single sold over 200,000 copies in the first week of release to
become the fastest selling single of the year, and held the coveted number
one spot during Christmas. The single featured the original recording
from 1984, as well as a live version performed at Live Aid in 1985 - both
of which feature Bono on vocals. |
